This actually raises a point which I think does need to be addressed. It is ridiculous to think that refs don't support a particular team - to be a professional ref shows that you are very interested in football and if you are very interested in football then it is safe to assume you support a particular football team.

Once you support a particular team, even if you are doing all you can can to be totally free of bias, then it is pretty hard not to allow your preferences impinge upon your decision making - even subconsciously.

Personally I have no problem with refs supporting a particular team - in fact I would find it very odd if they didn't. With that in mind I think all profesisonal refs should have to declare their affiliation when they are appointed professional status. Once that is done then it shouldn't be too hard for the FA to schedule refs to ensure there is no perceived conflict of interest.

Obviously refs shouldn't officiate over games where their team is playing and maybe this could be extended to say that they in the final 10 games of the season care should be taken to ensure they do not officiate over any games that involve clubs in direct competition with their nominated side. By that I mean if Ref A was a United fan and with 10 games to go there are three clubs in contention for the title then Ref A should not officiate over any games involving those three clubs.

Outside of the last 10 games refs should simply not take charge of games involving their nominated side.

im sure every ref has to admit to being a fan of a team and will never officiate them or a rive. i seem to remember that stupid bearded git being a boro fan and therefore never reffed a newcastle or sunderland game. and wasnt clattenburg outed as a dipper?

I remember reading about some research that studied how much the color of the shirt affected the referees' decision and there was something about the referees subconsciously favoring certain colours. I'm not 100% sure about it, but I think the refs favored red. Well, that's not the point, but if the colours affact their judgement subconsciously, surely they can't be 100% unbiased when they're officiating a match in which their favourite team is taking part in.

Well, I just finished watching the Manc-Toffee FA cup semi, and I thought the bean head did a pretty decent job with the match. Between Fellaini and Scholes there was some pretty tough/dirty challenges out there, so he did a good job keeping things in check.

Oh, and he didnt send anyone off for winning a 50/50 ball and then getting their leg hacked, so I guess thats a good day for him

he's a sh*t referee who has given man united a lot over the years.

but, like all referees in england, it's not a question of integrity* or bias (thankfully), but competence.

he showed how weak he was in that penalty decision- moyes comments obviously got to him, and that's why he's a liability.

*obviously, ignoring the self involved c*nts like winters and poll, with their misguided altruism and attention seeking nonsense.

It was a very strong shout for a Utd penalty, or at least it looked like it on the stream I had.

Didn't look like there was any contact to me...

Stone wall Penalty, ITV showed what happened and i love the fact it was a stone wall Penalty and Man Utd are out :coffeespit:

Jagielka's leg hit Welbecks shin causing his legs to cross and lose his balance, gotta laugh at the outcome !

why did you have to mention p**l and wi***r. im having my breakfast and nearly threw up when i saw there names. two of the most self obsessed c**ts ive ever had the misfortune to listen to. both rent a gob ex refs who just come over as bitter w**kers.

Weither Riley is or not, If I was a Utd fan and travelled all the way down south for that game I'd be pissed off with Fergie and his team selection. He says in a BBC interview that he picked this side because of the pitch, but Ronaldo, Carrick, Van Der Sar and Rooney didn't even travel to London.

The pitch had nothing to do with them not travelling, I'd love it if their season crumbled, Fergie is obviously saving the big guns for other competitions.

Why didn't Scholes or Tevez take a penalty?

Seeing as Utd have won their last 2 trophies on penalties, perhaps it was a fitting tribute

Why didn't Scholes and Tevez take one? Bottlers.

Ferdinand and Vidic? Not bottlers.

Ferdinand clearly had cramp and shouldn't have been in the position to take one, someone else should have offered. Its like Anelka in the CL final which meant JT had to take the 5th.

Make that three. The Champions League final last season, Community Shield at the start of the season and League Cup earlier this year. Maybe it could be four if you could win a league title on penalties.

forgot about the charity shield.

He now saying the semi games shouldn't have been played at Wembley (which I agree with) but his reasons are not because of logistics but because it devalues the competition.

From a bloke who pulled his side out of the competition a few years ago, and fielded a bunch of kids in a semi final at the weekend, I just don't know when to take this fella seriously.

And the penalty not given makes it all the more sweeter.

Thats what irks me the most. It's the most fantastic cup competition in the world, teams in league 2 can play the Premiership elite in a one off game, anything goes. Why pull out of that? Deny the chance of a team playing Manchester United and having the day of your frickin' life? For some silly club world championship that means bubkus?

It is an honour to play at our National Ground in our major cup final, which these prats would realise that. Always proud we field our strongest team (or close enough) in these cups, shows we care.

Considering winning the FA Cup saved Fergie's job a few years ago you'd think he'd treat it with a little more respect.

Let's not forget this is also the same bloke who accused Benitez of arrogance and after tapping up damn near every player he's ever signed he even had the nerve to whine about Real Madrid tapping up Ronaldo. Irony clearly not a strong point for Fergie.

Very little contact, if any, in the penalty shout and for once I feel the ref got it right! However, toward the end of play he failed miserably to award Everton two blatany corners and a couple of fouls!

Fergie looked like he was in the huff because, for once, he didn't get a penalty and he knew the way Everton were playing this was Utds possible only chance for the win!
