Posted October 16, 200915 yr Following on from the discussions in Dorset's 'Rio grande' thread, who would you choose as the 23 players to represent England in the World Cup in South Africa? Obviously make the assumption that everyone is fit. Mine would be 3 Goalkeepers David James Robert green Paul Robinson 7 Defenders Ashley Cole John Terry Rio Ferdinand Jonathan Woodgate Joleon Lescott Glen Johnson Micah Richards 8 Midfielders Frank Lampard Joe Cole Steven Gerrard Gareth Barry Aaron Lennon David Beckham James Milner Ashley Young 5 Strikers Wayne Rooney Theo Walcott Darren Bent Peter Crouch Jermain Defoe And when I look at that 23 it doesn't give me much confidence.

Bravo for leaving out Hargreaves and Heskey. :D My squad would be the same, although I'd rather Beckham not go to the World Cup but it doesn't appear that anyone is going to usurp his place so we're stuck with him and all the hyperbole that surrounds with him.
October 16, 200915 yr 3 Goalkeepers David James Robert Green Joe Hart 7 Defenders Ashley Cole John Terry Gary Cahill Jonathan Woodgate Joleon Lescott Phil Jagielka (RB or CB) Micah Richards 8 Midfielders Frank Lampard Joe Cole Mark Noble Gareth Barry Aaron Lennon Tom Huddlestone James Milner Ashley Young 5 Strikers Wayne Rooney Theo Walcott Darren Bent Gabriel Agbonlahor Jermain Defoe Same as Loz's, except for these omitted players: - David Beckham - over-rated past-it publicity whore Steven Gerrard - gobby w*nker, should be in nick anyway Peter Crouch - what the f*ck was he doing in the squad anyway? Scores against poor sides, but does f*ck all against top teams Glen Johnson - England are gonna need a defensive full-back in the WC, not a pseudo winger Paul Robinson - nowhere near good enough, although he was a few years back
October 16, 200915 yr Gordon Banks Peter Bonetti George Cohen Ray Wilson Bobby Moore Jack Charlton Ron Harris John Terry Ashley Cole Bobby Charlton Nobby Stiles Martin Peters Alan Ball John Hollins Alan Hudson Frank Lampard Joe Cole Geoff Hurst Jimmy Greaves Roger Hunt Peter Osgood Ian Hutchinson Kerry Dixon
October 17, 200915 yr Hart James Kirkland Brown Bridge Cole Ferdinand Jagielka Johnson Terry Barry Beckham Carrick Cole Gerrard Hargreaves Lampard Lennon Bent Crouch Defoe Rooney Walcott ... somehow I don't see this team beating Spain. Yeah, I could replace Carrick or Beckham with Lee Cattermole or somebody, but this is going to have a marginal effect.
October 17, 200915 yr Goalkeepers Green James Foster defenders A cole Terry Ferdinand Johnson Lescott King Cahill midfielders Lamps Gerrard Barry Joey Beckham Lennon Carrick young/milner (one of those two) Strikers Rooney Walcott Bent Crouch Defoe Not going to put Heskey there although im 95% sure Fabio will take him, very frustrating to watch him play. I put Crouch in just because he adds a different dimension to attack and i think he makes a good partner for Rooney. Carlton Cole has a pretty good shout if he keeps on scoring goals
October 18, 200915 yr Hart James Kirkland Brown Bridge Cole Ferdinand Jagielka Johnson Terry Barry Beckham Carrick Cole Gerrard Hargreaves Lampard Lennon Bent Crouch Defoe Rooney Walcott Unfortunately, the Polish national team did not play at World Cup :( :(
December 4, 200915 yr Green James Robinson Cole Bridge Terry Woodgate Jagielka Brown Rio (if fit/in form by then, if not Dawson) Lampard Beckham Gerrard Cole Barry Milner Young Lennon Rooney Carlton Cole Defoe Walcott Crouch

December 4, 200915 yr On the basis of my 23: The starting line up, for me, would be: ------------------------------Green -----Johnson-----Ferdinand---------JT---------Ash -----Lennon--------Barry---------Lampard-----Gerrard --------------------Rooney----------Defoe Bench: James, Lescott, Bridge, Carrick, Milner, SWP, Bent. Edited December 4, 200915 yr by Ruh Buh Juh
December 4, 200915 yr no swp?he's been outstanding this season i'll post mine up later... I take it that is a joke? He's been sh*te. And Darren Bent is never an England International in a million years.
December 5, 200915 yr 3 Goalkeepers David James Robert green Chris kirkland 8 Defenders Ashley Cole John Terry Rio Ferdinand wayne bridge Joleon Lescott Glen Johnson Matt upson Phil Jagielka 8 Midfielders Frank Lampard Joe Cole Steven Gerrard Gareth Barry Carrick David Beckham James Milner lennon 4 Strikers Wayne Rooney Carlton Cole heskey Jermain Defoe
December 5, 200915 yr Cancel it and instead of spending the money on whores in suits and overpaid egos use it to improve the lives of millions who still suffer in Africa (especially South Africa) today
January 1, 201015 yr Goalkeepers Joe Hart David James Rob Green Defenders Glen Johnson Phil Jagielka John Terry Rio Ferdinand Ledley King (if fit) Gary Cahill Ashley Cole Stephen Warnock Midfielders Aaron Lennon Theo Walcott Frank Lampard Steven Gerrard Gareth Barry James Milner Joe Cole Ashley Young Forwards Wayne Rooney Jermaine Defoe Peter Crouch Kevin Davies (Davies and walcott can switch positions when playing against small left backs. Davies playing there was the reason Utd and Evra in particular always struggled against Bolton)
January 2, 201015 yr i'd like to add joe heart the kid has had a great season so far prob no.1 at the mo..
January 2, 201015 yr Goalkeepers Robert Green Joe Hart ...errr... David James I guess. Defenders John Terry Ashley Cole Rio Ferdinand Matthew Upson Phil Jagielka Glen Johnson Gary Cahill Midfielders Frank Lampard Joe Cole (pending fitness/form, but definatley worth it) Gareth Barry James Milner Aaron Lennon Theo Wallcott Ashley Young Gerard Stevens Strikers Wayne Rooney Peter Crouch Jermaine Defoe Gabby Agbonlahor Darren Bent If Lescott is picked then Capello has officially lost any trust he previously had in me.
January 3, 201015 yr PloKoon13's completely serious and foolproof World Cup team: -----------------Hart---------------- Volz---Ferdinand----Terry----A Cole --------------Cattermole----------- -------------------------------------- ------Lampard---------Milner-------- Johnson-----------------------J Cole ---------------Rooney---------------- Clearly a World Cup winning side which would play classic English football. Hart - on his current form, the best English keeper in the league. Volz - all our other right backs are sh*t, and I don't think he ever played a game for Germany. He was a titan when he wasn't injured, and word on the grapevine is that he might be making a return to Schalke sometime soon. Ferdinand - form is temporary, class is per- ok, never mind. Terry - the lion at the heart of the English defence and the captain who will the first to lay his hands on the trophy. A Cole - no explanation needed - the best left back on the planet Cattermole - will play the Jackie Charlton role of kicking the opponents' forwards and hoofing the ball up to Bobby Charlton (or in this case, Rooney). Lampard - best player on the planet on his day, and with a midfield built around him, he will pump the goals in like he's Jimmy Greaves. Milner - a great young player who has been in great form this season for Villa. Also this way, we get to laugh some more at Gerrard. Johnson - a liability in defence, but a monster going forward. It makes sense, right? J Cole - will have hit top form again by this point, and besides, the alternative is Ashley Young. Rooney - as much as I hate to admit it, he's really quite good. I think Heskey or Crouch would fit the formation better, but it seems like a waste to leave him out really. Also - Bullard would have to be somewhere in the squad, as he and Volz would no doubt strike up a great dressing room partnership, and their wacky antics would keep everyone entertained while Gerrard sits sulking in the corner after finishing 10th in the league. Bring on Brazil.
February 28, 201014 yr Looks like Joey will not be able to make the cut. He's missed out on a berth for the Egypt friendly and that was pretty much his last chance. Capello has gone on to state that Cole's recent form hasn't helped his World Cup chances. Been subbed early into the second half was, as one would say, 'the last nail in the coffin'. The thing is, this would not have helped his morale. P.S. : Extremely happy that Shawcross has finally got his chance. But the Ramsey tackle didn't come at the right time for him, did it?
March 1, 201014 yr I think he'll be alright, he looked better in his time yesterday than he has pretty much has all year his pass to Frank was a good ball. In my belief we've got to try and get him out there on that right wing more often. That's where he plays best, despite telling us for years he was a number 10 he hasn't matched up there. On another front, what are everyone's thoughts on Carlton Cole's chances. I know he was undisciplined while with us, but surely now he's pulling his weight, he deserves some sort of chance. He's been on fire when he's been fit. Always makes me laugh that despite all the carry on about their famous junior academy as well as the whole us stealing their best players from them, their best player is a Chelsea junior.

Carlton Cole would be my first choice to start with rooney, would be good with defoe too. He's miles better than Heskey and I'd rather see him than Bent..
March 10, 201014 yr I am almost speechless at how many of you have put Crouch in the squad! See Bluebeard's post for why!
