Last Movie You Watched

Featured Replies

I've seen a few movies recently and some of them are movies I've seen before.

First off I had to watch some christmas movies since it's that time of year.

Started off with "It's A Wonderful Life". Had just seen it but saw it again. It's just brilliant. Probably the best christmas movie ever.

Followed up with "Miracle on 34th Street". Was going to see the remake with Attenborough, since he seems to be a great santa, but opted for the original one instead and I'm happy I did. It was just amazing.

Then I felt in the mood for some romance so I watched "Love Actually" for the umpteenth time. Great actors, nice stories and loads of love. Also, Bill Nighy is brilliant in it. One of my favourite romantic comedies and it's also great at christmas.

Last, but certainly not least, I just had to watch one of my favourite movies ever - The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Perfect for the holidays, nice story, great animation (stop-motion) and some really memorable songs. Can't get enough of it.

Apart from those christmas movies I've also watched some rather nice new films.

"Warrior". Two brothers compete in an MMA competition. Had expected a fight movie, but it was more than that. A drama with some fighting. I've heard some great reviews of it and some call it better than Rocky. I would say that it's a really good movie, but it's not flawless.

"Drive". A stunt driver earns extra money for driving criminals around when they do their dirty deeds. He decided to help his neighbours boyfriend who has just got our of jail.

I expected loads of action, but instead I got a compelling drama with great acting and a very interesting story. And the way they had shot the movie was highly interesting. One of the better movie I've seen this year.

"We Need To Talk About Kevin". Heard about this one many months ago and really wanted to see it. Managed to yesterday and it was worth the wait. Not an easy movie perhaps, but a very good story and the acting is great. Tilda Swinton is usually great in everything but here she is brilliant. I would not be surprised if she got an Oscar nomination for this movie.

I would like to write what it's about but I don't want to give anything away.

Think I've seen some other movies, but can't remember which ones right now.

Hangover 2, what an epic movie and since its a follow up on probably one of the funniest movies around it had some reputation to live up to and they managed to pull it off again. I laughed so many times to this movie its just hilarious, recommended if you are on a downer for sure!

I watched just one Christmas movie during the holidays and that was the classic(although a short one) The Snowman, which happened to be on the telly at just the right time(just before we had the big Christmas Eve dinner. Then I saw the first Wallace and Gromit short movie(Grand Day Out), which also happened to be on the telly at just the right time. I've seen it countless times, and although the animation is quite crude compared to the later movies, it's still fun to watch. The only feature length movie that I "watched"(I was in the same room and we talked about this and that with my mother and brother) was Dreamgirls. Well, I started to watch it, as it sounded interesting(story of The Supremes... In a way), but it wasn't very good. The music numbers just weren't all that great. It was fun to guess/spot who the characters were supposed to be in real life(they were only inspired by real life people), though.

And yeah, today I watched a documentary called Vesku(directed by Mika Kaurismäki), which is about a famous Finnish actor, comedian, singer, musician and a football goalkeeper(and the list goes on) who has had a long and colourful(to say the least) career since he was a young boy. There were some emotional moments and the story structure was quite interesting(the story wasn't told in a chronological order), but I was expecting more after all that I'd heard and read about it. It was a solid 3/5, but nothing more.

I'm about to watch Zorba the Greek which was a Christmas present. I haven't seen it for years, and am quite nervous that it won;t live up to my memories. Will let you know later.

Fincher's re-make, right?

I think it's a remake of the Swedish film and according to Wikapedia

In 2010, David Fincher directed a Hollywood adaptation of the book, for release in December 2011.[14] According to The Guardian, George Clooney, Johnny Depp, and Brad Pitt were all interested in playing the central role of Mikael Blomkvist, but Daniel Craig was officially confirmed as the lead in July 2010.[15] On August 16, 2010, it was officially confirmed that Rooney Mara would play Lisbeth Salander.[16] In the film, Robin Wright plays the role of Erika Berger,[17] while Christopher Plummer and Stellan Skarsgård play the roles of Henrik and Martin Vanger respectively.[18] Many key creative crew are reprising their roles from the "The Social Network" with Fincher, including Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, soundtrack composers, and Jeff Cronenweth, cinematographer.[citation needed]

Definitely. I hope they don't try a third though. I think at that point the theme would be getting a bit thin.

My wife and I just caught Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows yesterday. This was a very good flick especially if you enjoyed the first one.

On my list of films to see, the first was excellent.

I made a point of re-watching both of those films this Christmas. Both fantastic. Both brought a tear to my eye. I'm glad you wrote about them.

I came across this end of the year message(two parts) from Christopher Lee and I figured this thread would be the best place to post these videos:

I figured some of the movie fans on these forums might be interested in seeing them.

I've seen Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Sherlock in theaters over the last week. I'd give Dragon Tattoo a B- and Sherlock a C. Was disappointed with both of them.

I just watched a French documentary called La Jeu de la Mort, in which they conduct an experiment, which is a modern take on the Milgram experiment. The documentary started with a sequence which contained examples of how twisted some of the television shows are in different countries(to explain that this fake television show in the experiment is somehow believable), so I wasn't as shocked to see the results of the experiment as I was to see what sort of real television shows are actually broadcasted. I don't know how the broadcasters, the production companies and the production crews sleep at night after doing those kind of shows and I really don't know why people want to watch them. I'm not sure if the results had been much different if the setting had not been a television show, but it was still interesting.

I wanted to like Sherlock Holmes movie, but I just could not. Guy Ritchie makes Holmes into a kinda James Bond character, and I don't think that is what Sir Doyle had in mind. Smart, yes, but smart and extremely athletic, No. The disguises were stupid, to put it mildly. I did not hate the movie, and I agree with the C rating above. Hopefully, the next one will be an improvement.

Exactly. I get the scenes where he is able to pick up on a random item in the corner of the room and deduce something from that, but I hate the fighting scenes. Being very intuitive apparently means you can predict how an entire fight is going to play out. I actually enjoyed the first film (would've given it around a B, B+) but I do feel that both had overly complicated plots that didn't do the movie any favors.

Can't stand what Guy Ritchie has done to Sherlock Holmes. The BBC (I think it was) recently did an updated version of the classic and it was far, far superior. Modern but faithful to what made the original so popular.

I actually like Guy Ritchie too. Well, I loved Lock Stock and Snatch, never got around to checking out what he did post-Snatch but pre-Sherlock.

Watched "Rabbit Hole" tonight, starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as parents dealing with the loss of their 4-year old son. A sad movie, but not as sad as I expected. I'd give it a B+, although it used one of the more annoying movie tropes (character smokes pot and thinks everything is hilarious) and that makes me want to downgrade it out of spite. :) Kidman was nominated for an Academy Award for it, I believe, and I can see why.

Going through a Steve McQueen phase eh? Have a look at The Getaway as well, quality film.

Myself I watched Tower Heist last night. Pretty poor film overall as the ending seemed rushed and unexplained. But my man Alan Alda was excellent (he seems to get better with age) and Eddie has a stunning return to form, even if he is playing a stereotype.

Saw Tombstone yesterday, the one with Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell.

Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday is superb, and he should have won an Oscar for it (he was not even nominated, which is a disgrace).

That is one of my favourite films, Phillip. You're right, iot was shameful that Va;l Kilmer wasn't nominated for his performance.

X-Men: First Class

A very good movie and probably the best X-Men movie up to date even though its a prologue! Story and acting was amazing and it never really got boring.

9/10

About the only Steve McQueen I like is The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), with Faye Dunaway.

He's one of those "too cool for school" movie stars who generally make my skin crawl.
