September 27, 201114 yr yeah, good robot, bad robot, fight, fight, blah, blah.. 1.5 max! Exactly. Now I wouldn't have minded that the movie was so long if there was any character development or something, but there's nothing of the sort. It's just a s*itload of Shia Lebeuf, a lot of robot fighting (probably spending enough money stop the starvation in Africa) and then, naturaly, have loads of shots of the new hottie who are essentialy just there to give guys a massive hard-on. Megan Fox might be a pretty bad actress and a bit of a t*at, but atleast she looks like she belongs in an action movie.
September 28, 201114 yr yeah, good robot, bad robot, fight, fight, blah, blah.. 1.5 max! The trailer was more than enough for me. It's one of the silliest things I've seen in years.
September 28, 201114 yr Watched Horrible Bosses last night. It had some genuinely funny moments, like ones where you laugh out loud, and overall was rather good. Relatively fast paced with some nice acting and good chemistry between the actors. The end left a bit to be desired but all in all good fun. Boy, Jennifer Aniston is still so very hot.
September 30, 201114 yr Saw "The Tree of Life" by Terrence Malick, with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. Not familiar with Malicks other movies I didn't know what kind of movie it was going to be, but I had read some good things about it. Must say that even though I can enjoy artsy movies, this was a bit too much for me. There was a long segment in the beginning of the movie that almost made me give up. Without that one it would have been better. It was beautiful, but it was also quite boring. Still, there was some scenes in the movie that was amazing. Scenes with almost no dialogue, but that said a lot. And the acting was very good. In the end I think I'm happy that I've seen the movie, but I wont see it again and had I known what it would be like, I'm not sure I would have seen it in the first place. Tricky movie.
September 30, 201114 yr Moos, Malick is a masterful film-maker who has no stomach for mediocrity & formulaic crap: ie. at least 80% of films made. That is, he wants you to think. Most actors alive today will do anything & usually waive any fees just merely to work with the bloke. What does that tell you? Have a look at The Thin Red Line. Definitely within the top 3 war movies ever made, some say as great as Apocalypse Now albeit that that may be stretching it in my book.
October 3, 201114 yr In the end I think I'm happy that I've seen the movie, but I wont see it again and had I known what it would be like, I'm not sure I would have seen it in the first place. Tricky movie. That just about sums up the phrase "mixed review." :)
October 3, 201114 yr Have a look at The Thin Red Line. Definitely within the top 3 war movies ever made, some say as great as Apocalypse Now albeit that that may be stretching it in my book. Excellent film. Malick's finest work in my book. Also very close to Sean Penn's. Not sure about the AN comparison, the original version of that film is something else. Then again Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Marlon Brando and Dennis Hopper is a pretty tough cast to top, even if Brando was grossly overweight and didn't know his lines. That said as far a Vietnam films go I still prefer the Deer Hunter (though a bit of a different twist admittedly.)
October 4, 201114 yr On a considerably less intellectual note, I watched Super 8 the other night. An interesting exercise of meta-film making. A film about making a film, in which the main film's methods are revealed by the film within. Sounds fancy but it's not. JJ Abrams grew up on Spielberg and movies like ET. Here, he pays homage both to Speilberg and to his own childhood filmmaking roots. So we have a Speilberg-type children's action/buddy movie, along the lines of ET and Rob Reiner's Stand By Me. And within that movie, we have a young boy, a mini-JJ Abrams, who is making a zombie movie. All the tropes that mini-Abrams has in his kid's movie, also appear in the larger film. Sort of an exercise in exposing the workings of an action/sci-fi/horror movie, done with affection. I suspect this was a vanity project because it had a budget which, by Hollywood standards, was relatively small. But it works. The acting is good, especially Elle Fanning. And some of the writing (screenplay by Abrams) is too. N Not a great film, but very enjoyable and clearly some thought put into it. Edited October 4, 201114 yr by wxwax
October 12, 201114 yr Just watched Kick-Ass and I loved it! Had me racing till the end. Probably won't be to everyone's taste but if you're just looking for some fun and action, this ones for you. Without spoiling it, its about a kid who is average in every sense, who finds out what happens when you try to be a superhero in real life. Definitely recommend it!
October 12, 201114 yr Watched Senna last night, what a legend he was! Recommend it to everyone that likes F1, actually even if you dont like it as well because the documentary was so good.
October 12, 201114 yr It's getting to be the Halloween season, so it's time for advice on horror movies. Anyone seen any horror films lately worth checking out? What are your all-time favorites?
October 12, 201114 yr It's getting to be the Halloween season, so it's time for advice on horror movies. Anyone seen any horror films lately worth checking out? What are your all-time favorites? Haven't seen many horror movies lately. I think the last ones was Rec, Rec 2, The Orphanage and Paranormal Activity. Rec was great. They used the shaky camera technique well and some scenes was intense. Rec 2 was surprisingly good for a sequel. Almost as good as the first one. The Orphanage is more of a creepy movie, almost a slightly eerie drama. But it's great and has a very interesting story. Paranormal Activity was a slight disappointment. Not nearly as scary as I had hoped. But it was effective and I have to give credit for the creators for not focusing on horrific and/or styles of death and also loads of blood to make a movie. It was low budget and worked fine. But it is a movie one should watch alone, in the dark and preferably during a rainy and windy night to get the best effect. Watching it during the day would be quite boring. My all-time favourite horror movies? That is a tough one, but I'll do my best. In no particular order: Nosferatu - the original is creepy as hell. Jaws - old but it still works. Alien - a sci-fi but it do have many creepy and scary scenes. The Others - great story and eerie. Psycho - the shower scene, need I say more? The Thing - isolated horror, brilliant. The Shining - a classic and worth seeing more than once. Halloween, Friday the 13th & Nightmare on Elm Street - the three cult classics everyone has to see. À l'intérieur - intense french horror. Martyrs - very strange but I remember liking it when I saw it. There's probably a few more that I have forgotten about. There's also some I haven't seen that are supposed to be great, movies like The Exorcist. I really have to watch that movie this halloween. For someone like me who loves movies it really is very embarrasing not have seen it.
October 14, 201114 yr I watched Hitchcock's "Vertigo" last night, after not seeing it for many years. Spectacular film 9/10
October 14, 201114 yr Nosferatu - the original is creepy as hell. Jaws - old but it still works. Alien - a sci-fi but it do have many creepy and scary scenes. The Others - great story and eerie. The Thing - isolated horror, brilliant. Good movies on that list. I'd add the original that spawned the two newer The Things. It's a B&W 1951 film directed by Howard Hawks called The Thing From Outer Space. Great writing, a bit sexist in a period way but really well done. its excellence is why the franchise exists, I think. The original Alien creates fantastic tension. Edited October 14, 201114 yr by wxwax
October 14, 201114 yr I watched Hitchcock's "Vertigo" last night, after not seeing it for many years. Spectacular film 9/10 Agreed. Some people (me not among them, unfortunately) are completely creeped-out by The Birds, another Hitchcock classic. Another creepy classic is the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It's a pure metaphor for paranoia about a Soviet invasion. I think it might be the first film to create the concept that you can't tell friend from enemy because they all look alike.
October 15, 201114 yr I watched Hitchcock's "Vertigo" last night, after not seeing it for many years. Spectacular film 9/10 Great film. Jimmy Stewart is awesome. I obviously haven't seen said film yet because it hasn't been released but is anyone else looking forward to Scorcese's doco on George Harrison coming out in the next week or so?
October 15, 201114 yr Going to see "Ides of March" tonight with my girlfriend. I'd rather see 50/50 or Drive, but this should still be a quality movie. Bonus points for them filming some scenes at my alma mater in Cincinnati.
October 17, 201114 yr There's probably a few more that I have forgotten about. There's also some I haven't seen that are supposed to be great, movies like The Exorcist. I really have to watch that movie this halloween. For someone like me who loves movies it really is very embarrasing not have seen it. Just because I wrote that I felt that I had to watch The Exorcist. So I did. Damn, what a good movie it was! Perhaps not that scary, but things that was scary almost 40 years ago is usually not as frightening today. Still, it had tension and suspense enough and the story was good. The acting was even better. The adult actors were really good, but that wouldn't have mattered if they hadn't found a good child actor to play the girl. A mediocre one would have ruined it, but Linda Blair was brilliant. Really happy I saw this one. Think I'll have to watch some Hitchcock movies now. He did after all do some pretty good movies apart from the one I've seen - Psycho.
November 3, 201114 yr Watching Vampire Lovers on MGM. Brings back memories from when I was a teenager. Ingrid Pitt was really quite stunning. There really are some magnificent breasts on show!!
November 7, 201114 yr To make up for my gruesome evening last night (see Rant Thread if you're interested) I watched No Country For Old Men tonight. A brilliant film - scared me witless in parts. Disconcerting end, but probably more realistic because of it. I want to buy it on DVD now!
November 7, 201114 yr Just finished watching "It's a Wonderful Life". The old one by Frank Capra and with James Stewart. Absolutely brilliant and it left me sitting here with a warm feeling inside and whiping my tears.
November 7, 201114 yr Just finished watching "It's a Wonderful Life". The old one by Frank Capra and with James Stewart. Absolutely brilliant and it left me sitting here with a warm feeling inside and whiping my tears. Great movie. Another great Christmas movie is Miracle on 34th Street (make sure you watch the 1947 version.) Maybe you've already seen it?
November 7, 201114 yr Hanna Saoirse Ronan Cate Blanchett Eric Bana Directed by Joe Wright In life it's the journey, not the destination. In Hanna it's the story-telling, not the story. The story is a weird mash-up of movie cliches, paranoid Bourne Identity meeting coming-of-age Sixteen Candles. What makes Hannah so enjoyable is the craftsmanship of the story-telling. It's the acting by the stunning but asexual Saoirse Ronan and the not-quite-soulless Cate Blanchett. It's the visually sophisticated photography, which is serially beautiful. It's the music and the direction and the pace, which never flags but never rushes. The story is of a 16 year-old girl who's trained to be a killing machine by her guardian (Eric Bana), an on-the-run CIA operative. You could drop Matt Damon in her role and you'd have Bourne. But layered into Hanna's strange trip is her discovery of what her life has been missing: family and relationships. Director Joe Wright has taken his assemblage of cliches and orchestrated them into both an effective action thriller and an occasionally touching coming of age story. It's a fun ride.
November 16, 201114 yr Watched Tintin last night and thought it was a great start to the series, some are already expecting it to be a series similar to the Indiana Jones. I watched it on 3D and the visuals I felt was better than the others that I have seen lately (Panda2, Gulliver's travel etc). I'd say its a must watch if you have ever been an avid reader of the comics in your childhood.
