Very sad news, I saw goalkeeper Petar play many times for Chelsea. He was one of the clubs biggest ever characters, and often had me on the verge of a heart attack when he'd race out to the half-way line for the ball. Not one of my favourite players, but one of the most memorable, and he was deservedly Chelsea's Player of the Year in 1980 and 1981. Brought in from Partizan Belgrade to replace the aging Peter Bonetti, Petar played 114 times for Chelsea.

Rest In Peace, big man.

Petar Borota dies aged 56

Former Chelsea and Yugoslavia goalkeeper Petar Borota has died. He was 56.

Borota played 114 times for Chelsea after joining the English club from Partizan Belgrade in 1979. He won Chelsea's player of the year vote in 1981.

The Premier League club says Borota, who had been living in Genoa, Italy died Friday after a long illness.

"Petar was an unbelievable goalkeeper, very acrobatic and he was the benchmark for the keepers of today because he was one of the first to dribble the ball out," former Chelea teammate Gary Chivers said. "Petar would often be outside the area trying to head or kick the ball, although he wasn't always good at either of them."

Extremely sad news. He was a real showman who was always good for a laugh even if his antics did give constant heart murmers. I'll miss him.

Rest in Peace Petar..with Bonetti being such a big hero and hard act to follow Borota really had his work cut out to impress, still he was a good keeper and a part of our history.

Too many of the old heroes sadly no longer with us and leaving far too early.

RIP Pete.

I remember him well. Was a character and an entertainer. Played for Chelsea during the bad times when we truly were sh*t and entertainment was scarce.

56 far to young...............

he was a really decent shot stopper and no problem rushing outside his box at any random point!.................never knew what he would do next but he was a decent keeper at a point when we were not very good at all

he was also a bit of a character and if he was playing now would be a regular watch on TV

saved many a point for us especially away from home and he was really popular with the fans

sad day for anybody blue

Sad to hear about petar , I will alway remember his debut in a 0-0 draw with Liverpools which i watched on the Big Match . he was a real Chelsea character. RIP .

A truly unique player and character. Borata was the original eccentric showman keeper years before the likes of Rene Higuita.

RIP Petar.
