An ode to Didier Drogba by a Wolves fan

Featured Replies

Good morning all.

I'm a Wolves fan in peace and wondered if you could spare the time to see my blog on Didier Drogba in the Telegraph today?

I saw him destroy us at the Molineux (as most of you might have seen too), but what impressed me more was his honesty and downright refusal to hit the deck, despite our intentions to nobble him. No diving, no histrionics, just class.

So I might be in a minority (apart from amongst yuo boys) but I wanted you to read my ode to Didier.

Well done on winning the title again. Fully deserved.

Thanks for the comments guys! They mean a lot. The Premiership has been such an experience for a fan who really isn't used to it.

As a Wolves fan, you start off wondering where the points are coming from week after week; then you end up demanding more than you're perhaps entitled to. All the time you look on with mingled infatuation and fright at some thoroughly unattainable players.

So me (and the old man) enjoyed seeing the big name players at the Molineux. Most of them disappointed, and you leave the ground thinking they're overhyped. (Carrick and Barry to name but two)

Then there was Drogba. Words failed us. He was the only player (Bellamy was actually very impressive too in fairness) who was was a million times better than everyone tells you.

The fact he never once shirked a challenge, got behind the ball, never winced, moaned, or grumbled once, made me think that he's really misunderstood.

I'm backing him to sign for us. Maybe when he's 39!

PS: Also thought Obi Mikel was your best midfielder against us. Another specimen.

The unfortunate thing about Didier, is that he will always be tarred with the same brush by most other people. I have seen great improvements in his amount of err...acting (I still maintain he was never a diver...more an exaggerator...sometimes to ridiculous levels). But three factors conspire against him:

1) He can act like a petulant child (which I have grown to appreciate makes him, him)...and it made/makes people despise him

2) He was once a serial, 'diver' 'actor', whatever you want to call it...and it made/makes people despise him

3) And this is the big one....he plays for Chelsea...no one likes Chelsea except Chelsea fans, and Liverpool fans wanting to cling onto some historical significance

And it frustrates me the level of flak he cops...it's not justified, but while he's playing for Chelsea, he'll be seen as being "a cheating brat of a player, who is overrated", rather than "a uniquely brilliant player incorporating size, strength, skill and unnerving finishing ability, the likes of which is almost impossible to replicate."

He is a genius player, and I've grown to appreciate him more and more, flaws included...and on his day, he is unstoppable...and on form, there's no one better....except Titus Bramble...that guy's awesome.

Your article inspired me mate...cheers.

Brilliant read and really refreshing to see the perspective of someone untainted by the Premier League rivalry drama. I rate Drogba hands down as the best rounded forward in the world. He may not have Messi's tricks or Torres' pure goal scoring ability but as a complete striking package - Drogs is second to none. He's grown out of the theatrics but his exaggerations are part of the Drogba package and to be fair these days, when he's throwing a tantrum he's usually right (CL Semi-Final 2009). Anyway thanks for coming over and showing us the article. :)

I love the reference to Gail Platt. That really made me laugh out loud which is not easy to do.

How strange, considering the frequency with which you make others laugh out loud! laugh2.gif

Nice one mate.

There has been a wolves player thats been getting alot of talk on our forums. Some bloke called Mancienne? ;) What do you think of him by the way?

Hi blueboy. Re mancienne (am I sensing he's a moot point on here?!) He was imperious when he first came, a bit lescott like. Then teams would stick a big lump up front and he really struggled. It's his stature that let's him down. Then he played defensive midfielder and he looked like his old self. He'll never make a centre half imo. He may well turn out to be a class midfielder. If I told you I would like him at our place next season but won't be too gutted if he isn't, you get the picture I think

Bloody Wolves fans, making us like them and everything. How dare they come on our site and be all nice and likeable... :JC_doubleup:

Take the comparison with bully as a comp, cos that guy new where the back of the net waswas strong fast and pretty unplayable, but you will never no if he could cut it at the very top of football, although his england retutn aint bad.

First off, I'm a United fan. But i agree with you and your dad about Drogba, and his view on Tevez. I am only a young guy but your dad seems to know his stuff so listen up boy/man. Drogba fully deserves all the praise he gets. I too agree he is unplayable, and really do hope he is fit for the World Cup and continues his sublime form.

I don't support Chelsea. I think he is amazing- I find his 'antics' amusing rather than annoying, and understand his passion for good football far outweighs any negativities in his game. You gotta take into account how good he is, and then brush aside any small things you don't like about him. I think all chelsea players should be proud to play alongside such a great, and should marvel at his brilliance like I do. Best player in the World- screw Messi, Drogba is untamed and ready to wreak havoc like you've never SEEN!

I was just pointing out the general feelings of people I know...whether in person or on forums.

But, there are exceptions.

Funny how Rooney never catches the same stick for the same reasons. I'd go so far as to say Rooney's temper is worse than Drogba's strop. Look at this world cup nonsense of International Reffs learning English swear words just for Rooney. But when he loses it for United (and England to the English media), he's passionate and cares about his game. The double standards bother me - even if he does act like a brat sometimes.

Well done on winning the title again. Fully deserved

cheers. you and your old man are saying what a lot of us have been saying for some time. drogba doesn't actually dive.. meaning he doesn't feign contact, he sometimes exagerrates, but with some of the decisions that don't go his way (think Johnny Evans), i think this is understandable.

take this a little further. the sheer hypocrisy of the amount of criticism even hatred, aimed at Drogba is astounding, while blatant dives by the likes of steven gerrard are simply glossed over. and ronaldo's performance against the ivory coast yesterday was an absolute disgrace.
