ewitkows Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 He's only 2 months back from major knee surgery and miss huge parts of the last 3 years or so. I don't think playing him 3 times in a week this early in the season is the right move. Don't get me wrong he's played far better than I expected him too. I'd rather see Ramires get the start and if you needed a goal in the last 20 minutes then bring on Essian.
TheWestwayWonder Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 (edited) I think maybe all that time off might be the reason why. Getting him playing alot and back into some kind of rhythm might be a good thing for his recovery. I'm sure the coaching staff will reduce the number of games he is in towards the end of the calendar year. Edited September 15, 2010 by TheWestwayWonder
Mr Chelsea Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 i'm not, he's had quite a lot of time out, and looks to be enjoying playing again at the moment, like TWW said i'm sure he's been well monitored by the medical staff and will be rotated in time
MHL_blue Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I'm not concerned either. In fact I think he needs the games to get even more match training.
PloKoon13 Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Nothing is better for getting someone back to full fitness than playing time. Although if Essien's only been functioning at 80% until now, I feel sorry for the other teams for when he hits 100%.
Bobbywoodhogan Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I think its fine *touch wood* he'll get a rest when we play in the league cup no doubt, games will do him good in my opinion.
Barry Bridges Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I just dont like playing him in matches we know are likely to be scrappy yet arent vital at this point. Regardless, he is paid to play football and we have to trust Carlos assessment of the situation.
mbh Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 No worries mate, he missed the best part of last season with us, as well as the world cup, in my opinion he was raring to play and it shows in all of his games he has played so far, even in the pre-season friendlies. As PloKoon13 said, playing time is a good thing for his recovery, and I agree with TheWestwayWonder, the coaching staff will be monitoring him closely.
dkw Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Considering the amount of time he`s missed playing I doubt theres anyone tough enough at the club to stop him playing, I bet hes absolutely loving playing at the moment and will want to continue, especially as he has already had a fortnight off due to internationals.
KrazyTea Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 No he'll be fine, but I am glad to see that he's given up playing for the national side for a couple years. That will go a longer way to preserving his body for the long-term in my opinion
icecoolguy22 Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Essien was and still is one of the fittest bloke around, 2 games a week is easy for him. He missed 3/4 of the last season, to get his form back he needs to play as many games as possible right now. Playing him in the carling cup next week would be a big overkill, but otherwise he should play every match aside from dead rubbers.
KrazyTea Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I'm more concerned about misspelling Essien ;)
jcm28 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I think he needs to get his rythm back and then he can rest a couple of games.
Spiller86 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I think it is ok, it's still early in the season the usual niggles haven't started yet and he appears fit as a fiddle, so no reason not to be playing one of the best players in the club every match. Last season he would have been out for a month had Ghana not rushed him back to play in the ANC, thankfully he's given them the flick so I think we should be ok this time around. The thing that comforts me on this fact is that we have one of the finest sports medical teams in the world, who are no doubt treating him as top priority. The slightest sign of anything and he'll get the rest he needs, there is no way the club will be even entertaining the possibility of losing him for a third season straight.
BigIzz Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 He could just as easily get injured in training. Or getting into the shower in the morning. Injuries happen as there is only so much you can do to protect him from a potential injury. I'll trust the doctors that he is fit enough to play this much. The club has a massive investment in him so I seriously doubt they are taking any reckless chances.
The Brit Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 carlo has already said he will rotate players this season to keep them fresh - ashley cole didn't even travel to MSK Zilina - so I don;t think it will be long before essien is given a break. For example, I'm sure he won't play in the carling cup next week
Mikstaw Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 (edited) I don't think so... He is a very hard-working player... Of course he had trouble with his knee, but now he's fit to play and he's very useful for us... One of the most hard-working players I have ever seen! Edited September 17, 2010 by Mikstaw
mad_mac Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 The guy is a machine, play him as often as possible
Gem Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 In some ways, yes - I don't want him to get injured and miss the end of the season for what would seem like the 67th time. However, you can't wrap every player in cotton wall and injuries are part of it - just hope, this season, he is involved a lot more.
