The Liverpool Way - a long and whiney road

Featured Replies

There was a time when MOTD was compulsive viewing for football fans of every colour and creed, but not any longer, especially for those of us in Blue. No siree, not since the invasion and ultimate sofa occupation of a dying breed of old soldier, namely the ex-Liverpool pro Alan Hansen, ably assisted by Colin Murray, the seriously dumbed-up and bespectacled young admirer of all things Scouse. Throw in Mark Lawrenson for further Anfield flavouring and you could, if you were so inclined towards a few fun-filled lugubrious evenings-in, wallow around to your heart’s content in a weekly pool of ‘Pool propaganda. Only most of us don’t want to do that for any longer than is necessary, which usually equates to as long as it takes us to see the Chels highlights, or those of teams still in contention for titles, before getting the hell outta there in order to avoid the inevitable brickbats, sadly a now natural consequence of a certain Fernando Torres straying from the one and only true path otherwise known as ‘The Liverpool Way‘...

Not that you can ignore this Ay, Ay, Ay, gyratory system for too long these days, because arterial roads stretch from 5Live, where you can take a massive toll on your integrity and listen to regular Anfield b****x dished up by Alan Green, or travel right across the highbrow spectrum to TalkSport and catch John Aldridge telling it like it isn’t when it comes to making beds and lying in them. Clearly, even if he knew what it meant, analogy is not an Aldridge strongpoint, but no matter the merits of still being in a comfy Champions League or Premiership bed, as opposed to being perennially potless and sleeping rough, the notion of a ’Liverpool Way’ getting you to a Promised Land has enough disciples in the Media and old pro ranks to suggest that it would be along some sort of Damascene Road.

In truth, as far as anyone travelling on it is concerned, there appears to be no coming off ‘The Way’ without retribution. Poor Fernando made the mistake of heading for pastures new and thereafter Alan Hansen for one [disciple] will never see his terrific movement off the ball again. There is no bright golden haze in Hansen’s meadow once you’ve ploughed a furrow out of Anfield, so almost by ’Liverpool Way’ definition (unless you’re waking up from Aldridge’s proverbial red bed) there will never be a beautiful morning at another club. It is the penance paid for saying you are leaving Liverpool to win trophies. It is the reason why Suarez is ‘a snip’ and Carroll cannot be a one-season-wonder, even if he turns out to be…unless, heaven forbid, he leaves of his own accord a few years down the line.

It took a seasoned campaigner like Clarence Seedorf to expose ‘The Liverpool Way’ as the pernicious path it is on MOTD at the weekend, by the simple expedient of disagreeing with Hansen’s morose mantra on Torres, so crassly teased out of him by Murray’s £50m man remark. Clarence saw it for what it was, a free hit served up by a compliant presenter to a likeminded colleague seemingly above rebuke. To his credit he didn’t let it pass by without exposing the myopia and to his eternal shame, Hansen took umbrage, went ballistic, thereby confirming the worst fears of those who have always sensed a nasty religious zeal inherent in ‘The Liverpool Way’.

No doubt when Torres scores his first goal for Chelsea it will be instantly recognised on MOTD as ’his only one so far’. That is until such time as several go in, when they will be deemed ‘not yet enough to justify his fee‘. Of course, if they then start flying in from all angles it is bound to be heralded as being ’about time too’ and perish the thought if, as a climax to his first season with his new club, the Spaniard ever has the opportunity, nay even the audacity, to parade around a pitch with one of those trophy thingies. In a perfect world, the final sacrilege would be his netting of a winning goal, but don’t expect much of an acknowledgement of the fact on Merseyside should that happen. Aldridge would have already gone straight to his bed, lain in it, and pulled the covers up, while Hansen, bless him, would continue to insist that Chelsea Armageddon was just around the corner - yeh right, then left, before going straight on past ’The Liverpool Way’.

Watching Hansen make a complete tool of himself on MOTD was hilarious, especially after Seedorf made him look a complete wazzock. Hansen clinging on to his "he never even touched it in the 1st half" even after Seedorf totally rubbished it was entertaining. As for Aldridge he really is a bitter old moron, he cant even bring himself to say Torres`s full name. How pathetic and petty is that, especially from a so called adult.

Great post, Dorset. I've said it before, it's the Liverpool cult of personality where thinking on your own isn't allowed or encouraged. God forbid those strong enough mentally to walk away. That's why Gerrard didn't leave because he knew he'd be burn at the proverbial stake. Torres may be going through a goalless drought but there is a mental toughness to him that is hidden under his pretty boy looks. He knew exactly what he was getting into and he'll be ok. Torres will never be good enough for the Liverpool tinted media no matter the results because he dared walk away from Kenny. If he'd walked away when Roy or Rafa even were in charge it would have been ok. But how dare he walk away from the Kenny fountain of football immortality.

Awesome post. Didn't watch motd, and I haven't for a couple of years now, for the reasons stated. I'd rather watch goals on Sunday, hosted by the excellent chris kamara, he talks like a man that's lifted European cups, and hansons 'insight' is more like a pissed up Sunday league player at his local.

Chelsea are exactly where Liverpool want to be, hencwe the jealousy, they can't accept we have overtaken them as a footballing force, as Merc City and Spuds will also do in time

I think you'll find Merc & Spuds have already overtaken them

I think you'll find Merc & Spuds have already overtaken them

In the table, yes. But as a footballing force and European name, neither have any pedigree.

Chelsea now generate more revenue, get larger sponsership deals and top players want to come to us etc, whereas same can't yet be said for Spuds and Merc City not yet anyway.

Well I know that and you know that Myles, b ut it doesn't half add to the fun when you're winding scousers up telling that not only are they no longer part of the big four, they don't even make part of the big 5 anymore :laugh2:

ooh, ooh, forgot to add too that in terms of 'istry unless I'm mistaken both of these new critters won Euro trophies before scouse won any

Pros and Cons of being a foriegn fan

Cons:

Not able to see Chelsea live on a regular basis

Lack of knowledgeable supporters to converse with (well over here)

Pros:

Not having to get footy news from horrendously bias media

Liverpool fans arent interested enough in the sport over here to be as deluded as the ones you folk seem to trip over every time you step out the door.

Fantastic article yet again Dorset

interesting article...............and yes MOTD is tired and with hansen & lorro its all a bit old hat and definite scous bias, problem for me tho (and from lot tv punditry) is its just bland sound bites - I prefer MOTD2, at least there is often some decent technical assessment of the games. Pundits rarely give any real critical insight cos it might screwup their free tickets/relatinships with players/managers/clubs - its so pc it should be called PCOTD

Seedorf was excellent as he ignored the niceties and stated what he saw - lets have more of him and less ex-scouse 'heroes' banging their drums

Can't remember the last Chelsea game that wasn't shown live here. (I think there has been at least one this season, but it's been a while).

The only Liverpool fans I see or hear are the mouth-breathers at the pub.

Fox "Soccer" Channel's Sunday show with Warren Barton is very, very good. (The Irish guy is a Liverpool fan, but doesn't make a big deal about it).

"Mouth-breather" - LOL!

Agree about FSC's Super Sunday +. Warren Barton does pretty good analysis, even keeled, says when somebody was crap, when they were good, no matter the shirt color. I don't like the young kid (Martino) who seems to think he's too cool for the rest of us. Don't think he really brings much to the table. Keith Costigan is the Irish guy. Didn't realize he was a Liverpool fan. Maybe because he's not in the grovel at the feet position. Christian Miles, the host, keeps the show going smoothly.

Can't stand the host who does the CL games for FSC. Oh, and don't get me started on the ESPN hosts. Not sure if they're the same in England but they annoy the crap out of me here. Anti-Chelsea, pro-Liverpool, pro-United.

Is the exchange btw Seedorf and Hansen available online?

Good for Seedorf, he was class during his prime with Milan. I imagine as a pundit, he's much like he was a player, not afraid to stand his ground without losing his cool.

Incorrect :JC_doubledown:

Football only existed from 1972-1990 according to the 'Istoreee books :laugh2:

Just a shame they didn't go into administration and get relegated, at least it stops them goading us about the near threat of adminstration now though

I'd like to see the altercation between Hansen and Seedorf too. I saw MotD online and it cut right as Hansen was saying "not for me to argue with a legend" before going on to do exactly that

Just to give you an idea of how the average moronic dipper thinks, I had an argument with one on saturday over Carroll. He said he is at the best club for a striker, after all Liverpool have a history (yes, that word again) of producing better strikers than any other club. Not any other club in england, any other club anywhere. He rhymed off a load of players yet simply wouldnt accept players like Diouf, Bellamy, Crouch, heskey etc had been a flop for them. His head in the sand routine had everyone else shaking there heads and laughing.

Good post Dorset - Seedorf made a monkey out of Hansen who should know better

Have to say that in the past though, Hansen has sometimes been the best of a bad bunch, being realistic and pragmatic about Chelsea performance and prospects.

Compare this to Lawrenson who for the life of me I cannot understand how he ever got the job in the first place and how he keeps it.

He is a bitter little sh*t, so biased to be laughable - famously last December in the transfer window a couple of weeks before we bought Luiz and Torres he was spouting off on MOTD about how RA had 'lost interest' and was off to play with other toys.

Total tosser

What about Setanta....living in the great white north I have seen more games live than my brother in law in the UK, there is FSW and ESPN2, forrtunately we have Sportsnet also which carry games live on Saturdays. The only time I have missed a game this year is when I am working during the week.....time to leave the good ol USA and head north......oh I forgot the exchange rate might kill you! :laugh2:
