Fruit Bat: ‘The Safety Of Sports Ground Act of 1975’ was a direct result of ‘The Ibrox Stadium Disaster’ of 2nd Jan 1971.

When it became law, many clubs had to reduce their Stadium capacity to comply with it.

The biggest reduction in capacity I can remember was Hampden. It saw its capacity reduced from 134,000 to 100,000 then to 88,000. Some reduction!

Hampdens should have been much lower. My brother and I went there in 1978 to see England win 1-0. The place was a tip, one of the worst grounds I've ever been to, how they managed 134,000  without mass casualties I'll never know!

bluehaze: You originally posted these two pictures in the other thread called ‘Other Old Stuff.’ with the heading ‘Newcastle away 1983-84.’

If this is okay, I will try and post them across. Cheers.

Good points and there were often far more spectators inside than the official capacity!

Another one from  my first time at the Bridge! Sat in the benches that day, with my uncle. Next home game, against Coventry, I was in the Shed, and was needless to say, immediately hooked!

Probably no consolation, but I wasn’t there either. I was… at Everton with Arsenal. I shall explain.

Well skint at the time, I was down the pub talking to a few Arsenal mates during the week. “Come to Everton with us”, they said, “we’re going up by car, it’ll be a right craic.” And to my eternal shame, I replied “ok, why not”. So come Saturday there I was, on my way to Goodison with a car load of Arsenal. The journey up was uneventful, and we got to the ground shortly before kickoff.

Got into the away end, among the Arsenal support, a couple of times I was asked what I was doing there, so replied that I was there with my mates, and when they saw who I was with, that was fine. Not exactly unknown, some Arsenal fan I didn’t recognise came up to me and asked if I smoked rollups, which I did at the time, and gave me an ounce of Old Holborn. Don’t ask me!

After the match we managed to lose the driver, so we bunked back on the Arsenal special. On the way to Lime Street there was the usual thing of scousers - Liverpool as well, because they were also playing at home that day - on the other side of the road, running along behind the old bill, giving it the big ‘un.

On the special, as on the terraces, they knew who I was, but nobody bothered me. There were a couple of snide remarks about Chelsea, but that was just a few Arsenal fans talking among themselves. And that was it. Only time I ever went away with any other team.

Funniest thing, a couple of weeks later I was up Euston with a couple of Chelsea mates. Going up the stairs, we ran smack into a mob of Arsenal, most of whom I didn’t know, but who I later learnt were little Donald’s mates - snakey little sod who later ran with Cockney Reds. Anyway, there was me wearing a Leeds hat that I’d nicked, which got me a few looks! Fortunately a couple of them recognised me, one of them even saying that I was with them the other day. And so we went our separate ways, parting amicably,

Haha, I knew a Spurs fan and a West Ham that sometimes came with us.

Was always surprised they came yet they never made it obvious in the ground apart from not cheering so much though the odd song or chant often made them laugh.

A good friend of mine got a Arsenal home ticket off a friend in the early 90's and was sat right at the front with the season ticket holders with a CFC shirt on udnder his jacket. One of the others said, 'You're Chelsea.....'

'Yes, Mike couldn't make it and gave me his ticket.'

No problem once they knew that.

I once went to Millwall with the Spurs fan's work mates that was uncomfortable though no trouble.

There were a couple of very well known Tottenham fans who used to go away with us regularly, and from time to time a non-Chelsea mate, including QPR and West Ham fans, would ask to go in the Shed with me when we were playing the team they supported, and one time I took a friend of a friend from Coventry into the Shed. So I’m guessing this kind of thing was quite common.

Believe me though, that Goodison trip was the only time I ever went away with another team, and I wouldn’t have dreamt of gong to Upton Park, White Hart Lane, or anyone else with a non-Chelsea mate.

Any old Chelsea stories I love reading in my opinion we are a unique bunch certainly in London no other club has had the highs and lows we've had. From the early 70's success then from 75-95 pretty desperate times some highlights 83/84 but on the whole not great. Then 96 till now major trophies and now we've got the current situation might be a bit of a cliche but there really is never a dull moment supporting Chelsea.

Thats me top picture, front centre, wedge, dark V-Neck.

When that photo first emerged a good few people I know recognised themselves.

May be an image of 7 people and text that says "Penny for the guy share if you remember FOOTBALL CHELSE IPSWICH TOWN SATURBAY NOY SATAYY 5 Memory lane UK"

Only posting this as the picture was taken outside the ground. Looks like it was taken in the early sixties. However, I can't find a record of the first team playing Ipswich on 5 November. Could be the reserve team. It's years since I've seen kids asking a penny for the guy.
