I think Dennis scoring our equaliser at QPR with King Kerry in the background, took a while to get us off the pitch after the goal and QPR vanished quickly afterwards. Spotted a few blokes doing the Conga round Shepherd’s Bush Green afterwards. Damian Matthew - bags of potential but never made it big. Paul Elliot - career destroyed by that Scouse/Welsh git Saunders at Anfield. Steve Clarke - loyal, long serving and never let us down. Vinny - er … fastest booking ever?, scored a belter at Anfield when we won for the first time for a long time, decent foul on the West Ham keeper at Upton Park but in truth not a patch on Chopper. We had a lot of strikers around that time, Clive Allen as you mention, Mick Harford, David Mitchell and lastly Pier Luigi Casiraghi that after opening his scoring at WHU acquired one injury too many. We seemed to be very unlucky. Re Damian Matthew we had a few younger players come through and not many lasted the distance with us, I see a potential parallel today with Mount, James, Sarr, Chalobah etc.

Then followed the great Eddie Eddie Eddie chant. I wish I could relive that season

As far as I'm aware when the new East Stand opened up capacity was reduced to 56,000, which was only reached on thereabouts against Fulham on Boxing Day, Palace in the Cup, and maybe Arsenal v Orient in the semi. I don't think any areas of terracing were shut till the late 70s, so why a reduction in capacity; post Ibrox less packing in on terraces maybe?

Fruit Bat: ‘The Safety Of Sports Ground Act of 1975’ was a direct result of ‘The Ibrox Stadium Disaster’ of 2nd Jan 1971. When it became law, many clubs had to reduce their Stadium capacity to comply with it. The biggest reduction in capacity I can remember was Hampden. It saw its capacity reduced from 134,000 to 100,000 then to 88,000. Some reduction! Edited April 7, 20224 yr by erskblue
