My dad, my uncle (Spurs fan) and myself in the Paxton end that nicht, most Chelsea were in the Park Lane. I could not hide my delight as a 9/10 year old kid, when Garland scored, and was spat on from what seemed all directions. Just one of the many reasons I hate Tottenham.

August 10, 20178 yr From the club website. About our game against Derby at the start of the 83/84 season. http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2017/08/a-moment-in-time.html A Moment in Time FEATURETHU 10 AUG 2017 In a new feature for the new season, we recall some of the most memorable games in our history through pictures. We start off with an opening-day classic that set the tone for a brilliant league-winning campaign... CHELSEA V DERBY COUNTY, SATURDAY 27 AUGUST 1983, DIVISION TWO, STAMFORD BRIDGE The summer of 1983 proved to be one of the major turning points in the club’s history. Eight players were signed as a reaction to the near relegation of the previous season, mostly youngsters from the lower or Scottish leagues, but also former hero John Hollins who joined as player-coach. Midfielder Nigel Spackman, pictured below, had been spotted by manager John Neal and he opened the scoring on his debut inside five minutes. The 1983/84 season was off and running. Things got even better early in the second half against a side many tipped for promotion. Our no.7 Clive Walker doubled our advantage and is pictured below celebrating with Colin Lee in front of a joyous Shed End. Chris Hutchings made it three soon after and the Blues were rampant. Spackman's midfield partner John Bumstead fancied getting in on the act but this effort flew over... Colin Lee swings a cross over from in front of the West Stand benches. The scoring was completed with two goals by a new striker making his debut. His name? Kerry Dixon... It was the start of a brilliant Chelsea career and he will go down as one of our very best no.9s. The victory, and more importantly the manner of it, gave the team great confidence. We lost just one of our first 17 games and went top of the table on New Year's Eve. We clinched the Second Division title on the final day at Grimsby, edging out Sheffield Wednesday on goal difference. It brought one of the most fondly-remembered seasons in our history to a perfect conclusion. To find out more about the club's past visit the history section of the website with other great games and seasons featured. Photos courtesy of the Chelsea FC photo archive.
August 10, 20178 yr Cheers Boyne for the above v Derby Country at the start of our great 1983/84 season. Thought it was Everton in that earlier picture. Cheers for confirmation.

In my opinion no opening day game will prove as pivotal for the club as this one, we all soon forget who we played first game of season, but ask anyone of a certain age who we played on opening day of 83/84 season and they will reel off derby 5-0 without having to think, the following season opener will also be well remembered, Highbury, 20k chelsea, need I say more, anyway roll on Burnley Saturday

Got me thinking, when did our players start to wear the badge on their shirts? Found this picture of the team in 1960 and there are badges on the shirts. Also found a picture of Roy Bentley and no badge on his shirt. Edited August 10, 20178 yr by Boyne

A changing of the guard, from when I started to go with my dad, with old stagers like Peter Sillett, Peter Brabrook and Frank Blunstone rubbing shoulders with the 'new kids' like Greaves, Venables and Bonetti
August 10, 20178 yr There is a new series on the official club site. Home and Away and to start with it's Barry Bridges. A really good read. Be grateful if someone could put the link on.

There is a picture of Tommy in the Preston North End side taken just before the FA Cup Final of 1954 and Preston have their club badge on their home top.

Most club shirts didn't have embroidered badges until the start of replica shirts mid 70s. Seen clips especially with adidas 1976 that QPR and Boro didn't have a badge just the adidas leaf. Most shirts were sow on badges, before my first kit 77/78 I had a round neck blue shirt with the badge sown on. This was the start of the money making machine. At least my first kit lasted 77/78 78/79 79/80 80/81!!! This will never happen again. The Chelsea book of kit shows how mad the kit world has gone. The club would have made a bit if it had been modern times but the innocence of the times would have been lost.
August 10, 20178 yr Staying with the club badge/crest on the shirts. Above, Dennis Law in the Man Utd shirt without the badge in 1969. And a few years later, Osgood coming out onto the pitch also without a club badge/crest. It's strange to me that some do and some do not. It was something that I never noticed at the time.

I remember the first time he took on Billy Wright, then the captain of England in 1958, and left him on his backside. Everybody knew then that he was a very special talent.
August 11, 20178 yr Re club badge on the shirts. I had a look at pictures of our game v Dynamo Moscow in 1945 and some pictures including a team photo of our 1954/55 Championship winning team and we don't have a club badge on our shirts in either of these season
August 11, 20178 yr Had a look in historical kits site and it looks like 1960/61 was the first season we had club badges or crests or just CFC on our strips.
