It looks like a photoshoot type header by Roy, as there's not another player or spectator in sight! You've done yourself proud with all those pictures DD, well done mate.

Some more pictures I have enjoyed above.

Derek Johnstone (see previous page) was never a great trainer even when Jock Wallace was his manager at Rangers 1972-78. He enjoyed a few beers and was dropped by John Greig from the 1981 Scottish Cup Final squad became he had been out drinking on the Wednesday or Thursday before the Saturday Final.

In saying that, at his peak he was a very good player and it was strongly believed that both Arsenal and Spurs had £450,000 plus bids rejected by Rangers in the summer of 1978.

His career gradually went downhill from that 1977/78 peak.

DJ was a brave man not being a good trainer under Jock Wallace. Wallace was a hard man. Johnstone got his Rangers career off to a good start by scoring the winning goal in the Scottish League Cup Final against Celtic.

Great pictures everyone. Nice to see some of the early 80s pictures, use to only see pictures in the following home programmes from away games. Bought the book Hugh Hastings published a couple of years back. He was the official club photographer from mid 70s until 1986.

It looks like pin stripes on the shirt so it would be the yellow kit, so I thought maybe Cardiff. Played them second game 81/82 so with it being sunny could fit!! Detective work done!!

I think he worked hard at training under Wallace. Very few players didn't!

However,by his own admission (in his autobiography) he was gutted when Wallace left in summer 1978.

In his book,Johnstone states that he really enjoyed his time with us.

Thanks for the information. I'll look out for DJ's book. Another to add to the list of books to read. On youtube the other day I found the goal he scored against Wales in 1978. A cracking header. I'd forgotten how good a goal it was.

Was in the seats for this. Played on a Sunday for live ITV coverage, from 1983 this was the end of the Saturday 3 o'clock games.
