programme cover for Chelsea v Liverpool, Saturday, 3rd Oct 1931 Saturday, 3rd Oct 1931   We beat Liverpool 2-0   The great Scottish player Alex Jackson scoring both our goals.  40,597 saw it.

Alex Jackson, one of the legendary Wembley Wizards when Scotland beat England 5-1 at Wembley in 1928. At the time he was playing for Huddersfield and then moved to Chelsea. He scored a hat-trick in the game. Chelsea's Tommy Law played in the match as did one of our future players, Hughie Gallacher. The legendary Rangers winger, Alan Morton also played.

The Cov player on the cover of the programme is Roy Barry, he joined Coventry from Dunfermline Athletic up the road, and was a member of their Scottish Cup winning team in 1968, he later went on to play for Palace. How do I know this stuff you may ask? Not a google or wikipedia search but a more personal story. During the Summer of 84, just after THAT season had ended, I was working for a scaffolding/exhibition building company putting up all the bits and pieces for Farnborough Air Show, is so happened that Roy had hit hard times after a spell staying at one of her maj's gaffs. His pa in law was one of our directors and he gave Roy a summer's work labouring with us. Roy was a completely top bloke, very down to earth and as you can imagine our tea breaks were taken up with tales from the pro game. One other bonus was our occasional game of football against the lads who did all the canvassing and sheeting on top of our scaffolds, we had some centre half for those matches. He also tried to give me some tips as I was a Sunday League centre half at the time, I had to tell him though that the stuff he was telling me would get me banned for weeks/months at a time, it was then that I realised just what a brutal game the pros play, great bloke though and I hope he went on to live a happy life, all the best Roy.

That's a great photo. Never got to go to the old Bridge but I think I might have given that stand on the right a miss!! Looks a bit rickety to me!

Looks packed wonder who the opposition was.

Cheers MK. That is genuinely a great story.

programme cover for Bolton Wanderers v Chelsea, Saturday, 4th Oct 1980  Sat, 4th Oct 1980 and a 2nd Division away game v Bolton.  We won 3-2, with Colin Lee scoring two of our goals. 21st and 66th mins. Mike Fillery also scoring for us in the 58th min.   11,888 saw it.    James Clare only first team game for us.

programme cover for Chelsea v Aston Villa, Saturday, 4th Oct 1947 Saturday, 4th Oct 1947 and a massive crowd of  67,789  saw us beat Villa 4-2. W e were 4-1 ahead at half time.

Bobby Campbell scored two on his debut and Tommy Lawton scored his last two goals for us.

Tommy Lawton was the greatest centre forward of his era.

He signed for us in 1945 in a £11,500 move from Everton.

Tommy Lawton  scored 26 goals in 34 league games in the 46/47 season. A Chelsea record back then.

Yet never really settled with us, despite scoring an impressive 30 goals in just 42 games.

He fell out with Billy Birrell after he refused to go on a Sweden pre-season tour in 1947, This resulted in him requesting a transfer.

He eventually moved in Nov 1947 and for a British record of £20,000, but it was to Notts County, who were in Division 3 South at the time !

This was sensational news at the time !!

He made the surprise decision to drop down two divisions  to be reunited with manager Arthur Stollery, his former masseur and friend at Chelsea, and because he was promised a job outside of football upon his retirement by the Notts County Vice Chairman

In his career scored 231 goals in 390 League games and also 22 goals in 23 games for England.

His story of his personal life financial struggles after his playing career was over, is one which contrasts when he played and football salary riches of the top level players of today.

Universally acknowledged as the finest centre-forward of his generation, Tommy Lawton was a classic Chelsea signing, bought from Everton for a near-record £11,500 days before the epic friendly with Moscow Dynamo in November 1945.

The Russians claimed he had been hired specifically for the occasion and he duly scored the Pensioners’ third in a 3-3 draw.

With rockets in both boots, a magnificent physique and absolute dominance in the air, the Lancastrian’s debut in a mundane wartime regionalised league game swelled the crowd to a remarkable 53,000. Never one to disappoint, on his actual Division One bow, a 4-3 win against Bolton in front of 63,000, the England no.9 struck twice.

He hit seven braces in 1946/47 as part of a devastating front line alongside Len Goulden, Tommy Walker, Dicky Spence and Johnny Paton. Scots winger Paton loaded the bullets for him to fire Arsenal out of the FA Cup in January 1947.

Over one full season and two part-seasons of official football Lawton notched 35 goals in 53 appearances; for England the tally was an astonishing 22 in 23. Money and personal issues appeared to be behind his surprise decision to join Division Three Notts County for a British record £20,000 fee in November 1947. Lawton died in Nottingham in 1996.

Early 70's yellow and blue/black kit. Oxford Utd maybe? Looking at the size of the crowd it could be Arsenal in their away kit.

Everton in their away strip perhaps ?

Classic strip, team and win at Evwerton.

Eddie Mac in a very smart tracksuit top.

Now that would be worth buying if it was reissued as a Retro Tracksuit top !

That is Pukka. For some weird reason I’ve got Danny Cipriani’s old school cricket jumper. Fits like a glove. He went to Whitgift School and could have turned pro at cricket or rugby.

Dunno why I spelt 'Everton' the way I did above !:blush2:

And to think English was one of my better subjects at school !
