True mate. When I first went to football away fans didn't travel in any numbers and there were no " ends" as such, the Idea of attacking anyone because of who they supported was unthinkable. Shame it didn't stay that way

I used to go to the Locarno in Streatham and mass brawls would break out regularly, the old bill came in with dogs on one occasion.

No CCTV or social media then,  so those events didn't attract any public attention,  apart from those at the venue it went unremarked . It wasn't unusual anyway so I suppose it wasn't even newsworthy...

And you're right , the violence at the Den was against officials and opposing players.

Briefly lived on Mitcham Lane Streatham in the mid 90’s. How was the football demographic when you grew up there? I’m guessing majority Chelsea with a smattering of Palace and Millwall- plus Cockney Reds

Yeah mostly Chelsea when I lived in Brixton,  in the 60s, then Camberwell , the Elephant and the Borough was Millwall. Didn't know any Palace, .back then until I moved to Croydon. I think they were in the old 3rd division back then, but seem to recall they got good attendances..

There's a guy at thst Shed 50th event talking with Harkins. Long hair name of Dave who lived Mitcham near Streatham end who was a 'face" still see him occasionally..Small World

Oh yeah knew just one Cockney Red! Thinking back that was probably the only team back then that was supported by fans from other cities.

Can't remember any Liverpool, or other clubs etc that Londoners supported. ?

My brother in law whose about the 70 mark ( in the music business and wrote Blue Dat btw) grew up off Brixton Hill which was staunch Chelsea by his accounts- as was Stockwell which is basically a series of dodgy council estates- we had a good firm out of there- I know of Millwall fans from the North Brixton going towards Kennington area, also Coldharbour Lane way- bit of a mish mash- also got to know a lot of CFC from Kennington who still go now. You’d think it would be a Millwall stronghold but loads of us from that way. All changed now no doubt- everyone’s moved to the ‘ Burbs or Home Counties

. Hi mate, Blimey! The Stockwell mob were all mates of mine. The only time we see each other these days is at funerals sadly. . . I knew them from the local pubs mostly, but usually went with another group to games.

Mate, I've removed a bit of my comment. I'll send you a message

I think it was only the Boro trouble that  had the terraces shut as punishment

Millwall are the champions of ground closures....starting in 1920, then 1934 and 1938 and onwards !

f**king hell ,, decades before hooliganism , I wonder if they were the only ones at it ? Fairly sure they were, but 1920 , then twice in the 1930s ?  Mental f**kers

I think Leeds were actually thrown out of the league if memory serves me right. I think they were originally Leeds City. i am sure i read that somewhere

f**king hell that was a harsh punishment, I hope none of the EPL investigators looking into our recent irregularities uses this as a yardstick to punish us !

Good find mate, I wasn't aware of this

The Best of Saint and Greavesy was on ITV 4 this morning. From 85/86 JB returned to The Bridge- had an entertaining chat with Bates, John Hollins, Wee Pat, plus George Anstiss who was groundsman for an amazing 52  years. Remember watching this back in the day. There was another feature on Chopper Harris who’d just bought a golf course. Showed a clip of him going straight through the back of someone at Highbury followed by his trademark butter would melt innocent expression.

I think this is the Cup Final replay at Old Trafford, 1970, I know the photo is B&W but Eddie Mac seems to be wearing the yellow socks we wore that (memorable) night.
