Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu admits he would find a return to the Nou Camp this summer hard to resist.

Following reports that Barcelona were considering the option of activating a buy-back clause in his contract, the player has confessed he would be keen to make a return to la Liga.

“If [barcelona coach] Tito Vilanova wants me there, I would talk to him and discuss it with him. If they want me to enjoy my football and show some confidence in me, then onwards and upwards,†he told Catalan paper Sport.

If [barcelona coach] Tito Vilanova wants me there, I would talk to him and discuss it with him— Oriol Romeu

“Returning to Barcelona is an option but it depends on many things, because I want to play. I've always felt like a big Barcelona supporter, I am very grateful to FC Barcelona and it's thanks to them that I am where I am.

“I wanted to play more and Chelsea showed confidence in me, but if FC Barcelona want you to play, well....â€

The midfielder also admitted he would be willing to play as a central defender, the position he played as a youngster, should it facilitate his return to the Nou Camp.

“It's been a long time since I played as a central defender but it's all the same for me to play in that position as in midfield. What I want is to play and I'm willing to play in whatever position."

Romeu confirmed that Barcelona have the option to buy him back, and emphasised that he never felt they were trying to offload him by letting him move to Chelsea.

“They have the option to buy me back, I left knowing I had that option, and if they still have confidence in me, as they showed by leaving the option open, then they should let me know."

How on earth do Barca sign these "return sale" contracts with clubs? So stupid. Why would any club accept it? Romeu should be starting already- he will become one of the top 2 or 3 in the world in his position over the next 5 years.

All he encountered was a club in turmoil this year. Poor lad probably just wants to go somewhere he feels comfortable. Be sad to see him go though. I think he's blinding.

I don't think Barcelona would be in for him tbh, they have more than enough midfielders and are still interested in Javi matinez.

Romeu done well early in the season and then lost his place for some reason, I really think he is a quality player who I'd like to see feature more next season.

I think he will do a Cesc if he does get the call up. He will leave without a seconds thought.

Yup. The guys they bring through always seem to have a tie with the club that when they come calling it's always going to end in the same way.

I just hope we can hang on to him for a bit longer and maybe even get rid of that silly clause in his contract.

God no.

This guy is going to be miles better than Sergio B (can't spell his surname without googling), we can't let him go. Ever.

At least you dont have to worry about him being loaned out now ;)

The buyout clauses are normally accepted because the transfer fee is normally quite low for a quality player and also the team obviously want the player. If the buyout clause wasn't included you would have to pay a much higher transfer fee so teams will obviously pick a lower transfer fee and the buyout clause.

Not sure why English teams don't do it.

The kid was an AVB buy. He was always going to have questions once AVB left. That said given we overlooked Parker for him last season, I would be rather peeved if he left straight away.

I thought it was concluded last year that the buy out clause was only applicable if we wanted to sell him, i.e. if we were happy to let him move on then Barca had first rights with a previously agreed fee?

He looked very promising at the start of last season, very promising indeed however the second half of the seaosn certainly saw a dip in form combined with a reduction in the amount of playing time.

I would certainly want him to stay although I would say, from what I have seen, it is too early to claim he will be betterthan that horrible little sh*t Sergio Busquets. He showed promise, but we need to see more of him.

Is there any official word on this? Judging on Barca's comments after the Fabregas thing I'd say this is not the case.

Barca say they can have him for the agreed price, it was only AVB who said Chelsea had any say on the matter

would be pretty pissed off if he did leave tbh, but I always assumed he saw it as a bit of an extended loan

Can anybody shed any light on why he seemed to disappear towards the end of AVBs reign. I remember him looking great at the start, then he went a bit iffy (technical term), then he completely vanished. What gives?

Think towards the end of AVB we tried to set up in a different way, no idea why he never came back in when Robbie took over though.

Because being a defensive midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 places more demands on a player's passing than in a 4-3-3, Mikel was one of the players who most benefited from the formation switch, and wound up reclaiming the starting spot from Romeu.

Also, I think Romeu was injured for a decent chunk of the spring.

Hes going to have an even harder time getting into the side this season.Started well but his performances especailly away to Arsenal and Liverpool were both poor though he is young.I hope he stays he definitely has potential.

Why is this?

This is nonsense. The '1' there (4-1-2-2-1) is a conduit regardless of whether he plays expansively or simply. In a 4231 he is not a focus.

Trying to rephrase my point - the 1 in a 4-1-2-2-1 is mostly focused on getting the ball to the 2 ahead of him, or back to the defense. Playing in the pivot of a 4231, at least the way RDM had us playing, I think benefits more from being able to see a wide range of passes, because there are more players you could conceivably want to distribute the ball to. Romeu at the moment has worse vision in that respect than Mikel, partly because he's still pretty young and inexperienced and partly because Mikel's good at that kind of passing for a defensive midfielder.

Does that make more sense?

In any case, Mikel's form certainly picked up with the switch to the 4231, and Romeu's performances - when he was on the pitch - got less consistent; I'm just taking my best stab at understanding why.
