African Cup of Nations & Chelsea

Featured Replies

Put this in the Chelsea area of the forum, just because I'm referring to how it will effect us.

African Cup of Nations seems to happen every year now (?) next years one is coming up soon.

Philippe Auclair is reporting that both Moses and Mikel have been called up for Nigeria. Big Losses?

Will this effect how/if we spend in January?

I don't think these are positions we'll look to improve. There is an argument for DM but we could just recall Essien. They'll only miss 4 or 5 games at worst I believe. Moses is a bit of a loss but hopefully Marin can show he's got enough to at least compete for a place.

Not sure about recalling Essien, it might be expensive (and Mourihno has been using him) , also aren't Ghana in the ACON.

With Romeu out for so long, I wonder if they will try to go in for a DM in January.

Forgot about that .  We have players that can do a job there such as Lamps, Luiz, Ramires. I personally feel we should stick with this until the end of the season and let the new manager do what he wants.

I don't see the ACN being an issue for us at all this season (to be honest we have never done too badly whilst this tournament is on). Aside from the players mentioned above Oscar is capable of playing the deep Pirlo style role as well.

Moses is a grafter, we'll miss his effort. Lets face it though, it's not like we're losing Drogba, he has only ever been the one we would miss... Easien, Kalou, Mikel, Moses... Nah, not really.

We can play Luiz at DM with Cahill/Iva at CB, or play Oscar at DM with Marin or Sturridge (if hes still around, and from what I hear theres been a snag in his Liverpool move) as one of the attacking trio in his/Moses's place.

edit: Just remembered Lampard is back, rotation won't even be necessary with him/Ramires playing holding roles, except just to give players rest.

That being said, it still makes us look very thin for a club supposedly challenging for the title. If the rumours are true, hopefully we'll be seeing a certain afro-donning Belgian joining our midfield ranks in January.

AFAIK, it happens every 2 years still, but they are doing it 2 years in a row so that the ACON doesn't occur the same year as the world cup when it reverts back to its 2 year cycle.

Ba is going to the ACON if we sign him.

I don't see what all the fuss is about? We are losing 2 players that we have more than enough cover for, for the sake of a few weeks

Yeah but sometimes you need a player like Moses, I remember when we lost Geremi for a few weeks and we missed him for a game or two

I cant see either of them being a major loss really. Mikel cant even get a game right now and as good as Moses has been im sure we can cope with out him for a few weeks.
