A question on Fan loyaties

Featured Replies

I've supported Chelsea since around 2001. I'm from Ireland so a lot of my family are from or live in Liverpool. I was raised to support Liverpool but eventually took my choice with Chelsea, before Roman came in. Of course I've still always had a degree of respect for Liverpool. Recently, my auntie raised a point as i contemplated a Chelsea tattoo. She said that due to the reasons stated earlier, I should surely become a Liverpool fan. When I said "even if i wanted - you can't just change!"to which she said "if players can switch loyalties. Why can't fans?" What's everyone's opinion on this?

So she wants you to go from Liverpool 2 chelsea and back to behonest you should have stuck with Liverpool. I couldn't see myself changing teams no matter how old I was but that's just my opinion. By the way I'm Irish with chelsea tattoos.

Listen Paddy mate, if you get any dippers tatts you will surely live to regret it every day of your life

as for switching teams - if you must there are far better to follow than the dippers

I don't believe in switching support,if you decided to support Chelsea don't walk away. When i decided to support Chelsea it was permanent i wouldn't change Chelsea for anything some other team could provide,as far as i'm concerned if we end up like Rangers my love wouldn't drop one bit.

I don't think OP was asking whether to change but whether people think it's possible to change and if not, why not.

I think it's possible but unlikely.  I could just about imagine that if you were really disillusioned - not with results but more deep-seated (like against the Glasers). You could, but as I say unlikely and not for a rival.  And you can't decide to - it's a heart not a head thing.  I have developed a fondness for my new (20 years!) local team but that is because they're league one and don't impact on my main and first support of Chelsea.  But change allegiance, no.  I would lose interest in football before being able to support another premier league side.

My advice would be to not bother having the Chelsea Tatoo out of respect for the rest of your family but changing teams no way is that possible.

I was at my lowest with Chelsea last season and tried not to take any notice of the games as I couldn't stand the site of the dugout and hated the way the owner treated RDM but I still kept looking at the games and getting upset when we lost although every loss just felt like another step closer to the door for the Interim, I couldn't though have taken any interest in another team and can't see how anyone can.

Its not nice for the family when they bring up kids to support the team they do and then the said kids decide to support another team, I've had it with my kids, especially girls who support whoever the latest boyfriend does...my stepdaughter is with a gooner and my daughter just sacked one...I'd be gutted if one of them got a tattoo of a cannon or something thats for sure.

yeah just to clear up - im simply asking what people think. Not about if I should change. I supported Chelsea before Roman so I've seen worse times. Although I do get frustrated with the way the club is run sometimes aha. I'm just curious what everyone's opinions on it are. Cheers

Only if Chelsea went out of business and no longer exsisted would i support another team. Dont get me wrong sometimes i dont like Chelsea but its a bit like being married. You dont alway have to like them but you will always love them.

I reckon you can umm and err as a boy about who to decide but once you're past that 'making your mind up' stage then that's that and you can't change. For the majority of us, it wouldn't even cross our mind.

Kids can be an exception. I remember when Blackburn won the Premiership and kids where I was (Essex) were wearing Blackburn shirts. I doubt if one in a hundred supports Rovers now, so kids can change but once you know, you know and that is that.

And whatever you do, don;t have a tattoo!  You will regret it when you are old and wrinkly!

It's about emotional investment for me. If you put in little, you get little back. Of course it's possible to change allegiances but in my opinion, it means you don't put much time and love into the club.

Loyalty is important in Football, but at the end of the day, people can do and support as many teams as they want, you're just not going to get the same satisfaction (and hurt) when you win (or lose)

Nah - I can't do it. I'll remain Spurs with a strange affection for CFC.

If Tottenham were to vanish (using Uno's example- I'd probably support CFC (or Palace - soz - my Dad's team......:-)

PALACE? Scum. Never talk to me again.

Never?! It links to the idea of loyalty; I have a link to Palace via my old man so that would reflect loyalty(?)...err...wouldn't it...yes - it would!

i do not believe anyone can change their alegance to their club...If they do then they can do it time and again and are probably fairweather fans..Once your club has got into your bloodstream, your heart n then your soul, it should be there till you die....doesnt matter if you attend matches or not..If your guts are chelsea, thatll do...to love your club can only be superceded by loving your children.( and thats debatable for some)..chelseas true fans bleed blue and would not ever contemplate an alegance for anyone else

I think if Chelsea went out of business and no longer were a team then i would also support Palace. They are probably the closest "big" team to me. I do have a soft spot for Waford also, even before Zola went there.

When you start to support a team you should do until your dying day! I went to my first Chelsea game at 2 taken on my old mans shoulders and that was that! Now a ST holder and do nearly all the aways. You can't just switch loyalties.

And tbh... although this may sound harsh... if you're considering becoming a Liverpool fan then you're not proper Chelsea. They are vermin... Despicable club in so many ways.
