English core

Featured Replies

With Lampard probably in his last season for us, and JT and Cole both entering the twilight of their careers, are we about to lose the English core to our side?

Potentially it could exist through the likes of Bertrand (Shaw if we buy him), Chalobah, McEachran, etc... but for 2 of those it's looking less and less likely they will be here much longer, and for Chalobah we've still got to wait and see,

Would it bother you if we hardly had any English players in the first team? or do you think it's important to have at least 2 or 3 as important starting players?

I agree that this could be Lamp's last season, depends how he builds on this season and how we end up come May. JT has another one or two seasons in him yet. Cole probably good for another year or two. Cahill is only 27, we have youngsters and we will probably buy more.

We may lose the championship winning spine temporarily , but we'll always have English players. Whether they will be the superstars of the team remains to be seen.

I think we are good for another 1 or 2 years, but yes I think it is important to have a couple local lads in the team

it would definitely disappoint me if we did not have several English/British players in our first team. it may not matter to some, but i think all english teams should show a loyalty to english players, and do their best to support/promote home grown players. plus these players are invaluable in certain types of games (e.g away to stoke in mid-winter, derby game, fa cup early round games) as they understand the true meaning of those games, and have the mental qualities required to succeed in them

You speak as if people born outside England are limp-wristed cowards.

It's pure xenophobia couched in cliche. There is nothing intrinsic about English players that makes them more mentally able to cope with the supposed demands of playing away in winter to Stoke.

Aside from the need for 8 homegrown players i'm not overly concerned about the number of English players in the side.

The fact is there aren't many English people of Lamps/JT/Ash's quality coming through right now, Shaw could potentially be the next Ash and Barkley is probably the best young English midfielder right now, but outside of that is just a lot of overpaid overhyped mediocre players.
