How good are the Chelsea talent scouts?

Featured Replies

How good do you think our scouts really are? We've obviously found some gems in the past, but I think we still lack the ability to find the very best talent that will make the biggest difference to our team. Is it either our lack of abilities to find the very best talent or our lack of efficiency in securing said player?

I mean, we've seen it with Suarez (Liverpool), Aguero (Man city), Ronaldo (Man Utd), Bale (Tottenham), Torres (Liverpool and in his prime) and a host of others who have been found and bought by other top English teams, whereas we either don't find these players or are too slow in securing their services.

When are we personally going to find our own Messi, Cavani, Falcao, Aguero, Ronaldo, Suarez, Bale etc?

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure other top teams are saying the same thing, but it would be nice to finally find a player who is going to make the biggest difference to us on a consistent basis. A lot of people will say we have Hazard, but lets be honest, he was already on a lot of people's radars before he came to us and, if it wasn't for us winning the CL, I think he would have been another team's player.

We need to find someone like a Suarez or Ronaldo who are almost unknown, but end up as the best players in the world.

What do you guys think?

Of all those players only Bale and Ronaldo can be considered "Found". Suarez, Aguero etc were all established high priced stars. Hardly some unknown quantities. You discounted Hazard because of it but somehow these others still count ??

If you want to use that criteria we already have Hazard, we got Lamps, Terry, Cech.

This is really scraping the bottom of the barrel of new ways to feel sorry for ourselves when we are actually in a fantastic position for the future. This post match depression needs to end soon please.

To be honest most guys like Torres, Aguero, Suarez ect were making headlines in their leagues and were obviously talented guys.

Our problem I doubt is seeking these players out it's the people making the desision to go through with it or not.

We tend to go for the finished article although we have invested recenetly in guys such as Hazard, Oscar, Dave and Lukaku who were tipped to be future stars so we obviously are doing something right.

It's very much a lottery though, some work other don't. Hazard and Oscar worked while Lukaku and De Bruyne look to have not worked (at least we MADE money from that though).

The trouble is in a side like ours we need players to hit hit the ground running and young prospects tend not to get the game time to develop like Sturridge who now looks like a classy striker.

We no doubt have some of the best scouts in Europe.

It doesn't take good scouts to spot Suarez, Aguero, Torres... It was just other clubs choosing to spend big sums on those players.

As for Bale, he looked rubbish for his first two years at Spurs, I don't think anyone knew he was going to develop into the player he has.

And United were very quick off the mark to sign Ronaldo...

We've signed Hazard for £30m, "only" about £5m less than what Liverpool paid for Suarez so I'm not sure I agree with the point you are making in truth.

We got Oscar in for around £20m, relatively unknown within Europe and is going to be Brazil's number 10 at their "home" World Cup.

We've got a huge youth academy that's signed young players from all over the world with some showing good signs of potential such as T Hazard and Piazon.

We've sign Kurt Zouma in January as well who was apparently much sort after within by many European clubs.

we're all agonising after the weekend and wondering about what ifs - but Suarez and Sturridge have had 2 years to sort themselves out and have played a full season with no distractions from the premier league. not only were they not involved in Europe, they went out of the league cup at the first opportunity and only played 3 games in the fa cup

if we had that luxury (and a couple of new strikers to bed in) chances are we'd be feeling pretty pleased with ourselves too

I agree that we are building a team for the future, and hopefully Mourinho is apart of that (unless Roman has other ideas) but our lack of striking options is severely detrimental, not just for this season, but for future seasons. I don't even believe the likes of Costa or Cavani will be a success here. These players come with the hype already, only to be a huge let down once they start playing in the PL. There could be some hidden gems in the Youth set up, but we are so unwilling to give those players a try. When you see us buying a player for 25-30 million, it makes you wonder if it would be better to introduce a youngter into the team, rather than buying some player from some obscure league.

Suarez has been consistent every season in the PL, Hazard hasn't. A player is worth the money when he is consistent, not hot & cold like Hazard usually is. Don't get me wrong, he is still a great talent, but I'm just not sure he will ever be consistent enough to be considered amongst the very best players. The same can be said for Oscar too. These players look great in the beginning of the season, but as soon as more games creep in, you suddenly start seeing their dip in form and inconsistency.

Suarez has also been consistantly unstable and is always (imo) one moment of madness away from a long time banning...Maybe with genius comes a streak of lunacy, although Bale, Ronaldo and Messi seem to be able to function without biting people etc...

i've seen stories suggesting we will sell Lukaku too - seems to me we need a big lumbering striker like him, even for those occasions when it's a wet Tuesday at Stoke and you need to throw everything at them to get a last minute winner

not every striker suits English football as we know to our cost, there's no guarantee that Costa will be a hit here

But Suarez is 27, he is peaking as a footballer.

Hazard and Oscar are both in their early 20's, 4 and 5 years younger than Suarez is.

They have plenty of time to mature and develop the consistency that you feel they lack.

I think you are being a far to critical of Chelsea's signings past and present.

You cant sign every single good player in the world and also there are always players who do better than you expect like Bale for example. This thread could be done for every single club in the world. I think overall our transfer activity on the whole since Roman took over has been pretty good even better since Emenalo was appointed technical director, i have been impressed with his signings.

I agree they have time to develop, but there's other players who are similar ages and are much better in ability. The likes of Kroos is miles ahead of Oscar in terms of ability.

I'm not trying to be critical, I just want the best from these players and for the team.

The thing that frustrates me is, we spend out 11 million for Salah and 32 million for Willian, whereas we could have used a youth player like Alex Kiwomya. A young English player who is going to play for the shirt and work his socks off for the team and Jose. We don't know how he'd cope in the first, sure, I understand that, but we don't know how the likes of Salah will cope either. We may as well not have a youth system.

I think the scouting is good, but I do think that we sold players we shouldn't have like sturridge de bruyne and mata. I wouldn't be surprised to see lukaku and courtois going before given a chance as well.

If all these players were to leave for footballing reasins then fair enough, but I think weve lost good players through politics and a lack of managerial stabilty.

Hopefully mourinho will stick round long enough so we dont these negative issues with regards recruitment.

I think we should buy Porto's and Benfica's scouts in South America.  They get some incredible talents from there.

And get them all via third party ownership which is outlawed in the Premier League.

There's a reason they get so many of those players, they get to put them in the shop window for the rest of Europe and the third party owners cash in big time when team like us snap up the best of the talent.

Robben, Matic (technically) and Oscar I might add.

But couldn't we just buy out the 3rd parties from the get go (directly from South America)? We contract the player free and clear for a much lesser amount (probably 10% of the amount for some) than if waiting till they become stars at a Portuguese club

Because the current model gets a much bigger payout for the third party.

They often get 60/70/80% of the fees for the likes of Falcao moving for tens of millions and the same player will pay part of their salary to the third party and might pay out in transfer fees two or three times in their career.

Selling outright to Premier League sides isn't profitable for the third party.
