Filipe Luis to Chelsea... and Back Again.

If we fail to sign Shaw now we will regret it as in four years time he will be in the Gareth Bale class, every Southampton fan I know says Shaw is better than Bale was at his age and fans know best don't we :)

You're talking as if it's fact, don't forget that Bale was an average left back who was converted to a winger. If Shaw failed at LB here I doubt we'd move him to the wing we'd most likely sell him which people forget is what Spurs tried to do with Bale. I think you want him cause you hope that's what will happen when in actual fact it's highly unlikely.

Look at the amount of people on here who couldnt wait to tell us all about the "mistakes" Jose made and moaned about not coming close enough to be winning the league. Yes there are actually people who thought that!

Now just think if we signed Shaw and say Lallana and didnt win anything for another season or two. People on here would be calling for Jose's head. People have already said that we should reconsider manager if Jose doesnt win something next season. As crazy as that sounds.

For me Jose is building a squad that will win things. Some younger players who still need work and some older players who will be a driving force in the team. Jose said last season we lacked leaders on the pitch, well if you have a load of youngsters out there then that will happen. Thats why the gooners fall away at the end of each season when the going gets tough.

Even our best young players like Hazard and Oscar had big dips in form last season and looked a little lost at times. Hazard said himself that Eto'o was always driving him forward and telling him to make his mark on the game. I think every team needs players who have been there and done it so that the youngsters have someone to look up to and to learn on when needed.

If you dont agree then go and have a look at posts tweeted or Instagramed by the likes of Hazard and Oscar and even MvG about Lampard. The all looked up to him, Hazard refered to him as boss.

Well said mate, people at far too in love with the idea of Shaw instead of thinking what's best for the here and now. Unfortunately Jose doesn't have time to go about building a side that could potentially win something in 5 or 6 years time he needs the top reliable players now.

I still believe we are after Shaw and are using Luis to bargain down the price. If we were genuinely after Luis, we'd probably have signed him by now (assuming talk of his buyout clause is true)

A big fat NO.

Based on what? It's just wishful thinking in your part

Whenever we are trying to make a large but difficult signing (that is to say we have to really argue the price), we always negotiate with other options so as to gain leverage in the negotiation process will our primary target. We are very consistent in that regard.

Also, we have a very tight situation regarding the whole home grown thing. Apparently last year we had 2 spots in our playing roster left empty due to lack of homegrown players. Considering Lampard and Cole were both homegrown (and Terry who maybe in his last season), we need to replace these players with homegrown lest our roster end up 3 or 4 players short next season.

I'm not saying for sure it will happen. But I think it's more likely than the thread is giving credit.

I don't think it's likely at all this window I think we're in for Filipe and that's all there us to it, in fact from what I've read it sounds like it's a done deal.

You may well be right. But that will mean (assuming Costa takes Eto'os non-homegrown slot) one less spot in our roster next season for non-homegrown players.

That was the primary reason Essien (a Mourinho favourite) was sold last season. Because we needed the squad space for new non-homegrown signings.

Which non-homegrown players are Chelsea planning to get rid of to make room for Luis?

Really like luke shaw, but I do feel we could lack experience with the loss of cole and lampard, so I'm not against this signing. Luis has always impressed me, so I think he be a good signing for us.

FYI

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/features/home-grown-quota-for-premier-league.html

" All 20 Clubs must include eight Home Grown players out of a squad of 25 for that Premier League season."

That means maximum 17 non-homegrown players

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/fans/faqs/home-grown-player-rule.html

With Lampard and Cole gone we have only Bertrand, Terry, Cahill and Moses left (though Cesc will count as one). That's 5 players assuming Bertrand and Moses stay (and that's unknown at this stage). Meaning we are 3 players short of filling the 25 man roster next season.

More importantly, it means that every non-homegrown signing we make has to come with a non-homegrown player being deregistered (unless under 21) as we have filled our 17 player quota already (and Courtiois doesn't count as homegrown either)

Also Salah (and possibly Lukaku and Van Ginkel) will count as non-homegrown when they turn 21, so the situation isn't going to fix itself over time either.

It's clearly not being appreciated here how tight the situation is. But Mourinho and co would be well aware of this.

Wouldn't lukaku now count as home grown? also there will still a few players that are under 21 and don't have to be registered as part of the 17.

Maybe it will be Terry, cahill, bertrand, fabregas, lukaku, Blackman as the homegrown players.

The 17 foreigners could be

Cech

Courtois

Ivanovic

Azpiliucuta

Felipe Luis

Mikel

Ramires

Matic

Tiago

Oscar

Hazard

Willian

Schurrle

Salah

Torres

Costa

Plus 1 more.

Van ginkel and Zouma wouldn't have to be registered. I don't think it's particularly a problem this season, and hopefully 1 or 2 will step up from the youth team to be at least squad players.

?? Link is to a google search for Juanfran? Am I missing something?

It says at the top on the little bit of wicki info that he's a chelsea player.

Really?  I can't see anything about Chelsea.  Mind you I am tired.  But I still don't see anything on that link.

Sorry still confused - as I said the link is to Juanfran not Filipe Luis!  No picture there of Luis that I can see....

I think I should just give up!

No one should trust anything that's written on Wikipedia. Particularly when it comes to football !
