That's not protecting yourself at all, its smashing a bloke in the face, plain and simple. He knew exactly what he was doing, you can tell by the fact it's a straight arm which is completely unnatural.

If I'm playing rugby and there's a high ball in a similar position with a guy coming at me, there's two things I'm going to try to do (if I'm not pulling out). First is two stop the guy from getting there by fencing/fending him off with my arm, which is what you can also clearly see Fabregas doing with his left arm albeit it too late. Secondly I'm going to rotate my body to get in front of him so that if he's going to hit me, it'll be my back.

That's my reading. It would be very easy to slag Adam off and I've done that in the past but I simply think that this particular incident is one of those things that happens in sport, especially fast-paced ones.

But I can see why people would think it's a deliberate elbow (although if you're going to elbow someone like that then you properly lead with the elbow) based on the slowed-down video and the player doing it. I just respectfully disagree.

That, or Adams decided, mid game, to impersonate Buzz Lightyear. I am not making light of this as I agree with what Pat Nevin highlighted, that he should have been off!

1-it wasn't rugby

2- you go up to fend a player at a high ball you aren't getting the ball, I used my knees or turned into it.

3-it wasn't rugby. Again.

4-it wasn't rugby players competing for a high ball.

5-it wasn't rugby. Again.

that has zero relevance to the discussion and I have no idea why you even mentioned.

Adam has went in with an unnatural straight arm and broken fabregas nose.

I'm sure that even in rugby a forearm smash is illegal.

I'd be livid if any of our own were on the receiving end of a red card for a similar challenge so I can't bring myself to agree that Adam should have walked, for me not even a yellow - just an unfortunate incident that happened to involve the c**t that is Charlie Adam.

If anyone should have walked it should have been Crouch for his "scissor tackle" on Hazard.

1. No it wasn't but that's my closest recent experience of such a move to 'claim' a contested ball.

2. For that height of ball? I didn't realise you played. What position?

3. You've said that

4. And that

5. I'm sensing a pattern

I mentioned it because, well see post one.

What amazes me is that if it was such an awful incident that Jose hasn't mentioned it. At all. Ever.

It's just not rugby is it. :good2:

It is, but that wouldn't constitute one.

Like I said, people will see what they want to see but for me it's just one of those things and Cesc seems to agree.

As a person who actually plays rugby let me just pipe in with this thought.  If you have to justify a football challenge by comparing it to a rugby challenge, you're probably in the wrong.

FFS :laugh2:

I was actually comparing it to the way you'd protect yourself when contesting for a ball but I can see your point and totally respect your point of view.

Why do you think Jose didn't mention it?

I played full back up to county level as a junior, and never once was I taught to put my arm out when competing for a loose ball, or a high ball .

No, because it would be asking for it to be broken!

No, because it would be asking for it to be broken!

exactly that, probably the daftest thing to as I was always told to attack the ball with both hands, use your knees or body to defend the space.

See this is where we are probably finding some difference. I was imagining a bouncing ball (like the one in the incident) and thinking how I'd try and knock it back whereas you seem to be talking about taking a high ball. Feel like we're going to deep into this so just have to agree to disagree. I imagine if it's actually an issue then Jose will bring it up in the next presser.

Didn't know you were a rugby man though.

Was at the game but was really disappointed with the sound effects on Sky's coverage. Watched it back in HD and the sound of the crowd was not great, yet I know it was great from being there. Palace game on last night, they get between 500 and a 1000 in the corner of the ground and Sky make it sound like 40,000. Anyone else on here that was at the game?

yes I was in the MHU and we were singing Matthew hardings blue and white army for about 25 minutes really loudly. I think it's where sky put the microphones, when I watched it back when I got home I could here the pitiful amount of Stoke fans loudly and us not so loud.

I think it's common practice to put the mikes in their the East Stands or close to Shed End where the away fans are placed.
