I was listening to the Chelsea fancast the other day and they said something that intrigued me. They said the term legend is thrown around to easily and that some are actually just cult heroes. So for example:

Terry is a club legend

Joe Cole is a cult hero

Lampard is a club legend

Juan Mata is a cult hero

Would everyone agree with this? I think I do but I bet we'd disagree on a few if we did lists.

Other than those mentioned I would say guys like Wisey, Guillit, Makelele, Drogba are club legends

Whilst some players like Ferreira, Flo, etc are cult heroes.

Makelele I wouldn't have as a legend simply because he wasn't here long enough, world class player right enough.

Legend to me are : Zola, Cech, Terry, Lampard, Cole, Drogba, Wise, Ozzy, Robbie (player added to the fact he managed us to CL).

I think it's unique to us because we have 5 or 6 players from the same era who are all legends in their own right because of our achievements in that time.

I think that's a great distinction and the four you have listed are spot-on.

Joey is one of my all time favourite Chelsea players, along with Pat Nevin, Eidur and Zola but you could argue all of those are cult hero's as opposed to actual legends. I think to warrant the "legend" status you truly have to go beyond and JT and Lamps do that due to their achievements, personal records and sheer number of appearance / many years service.

You can't have too many legends because it diminishes their significance.

Terry the clubs most successful captain and our highest scorer defender, yes legend.

Lampard, all time top goal scorer, legend.

Drogba, the man who scored the goal to equal the game in the Champions League final and then score the winning penalty, legend.

Petr Cech, all time record for clean sheets, legend.

Dennis Wise, captain for the late 90's period that saw us lay down the successful that was the roots for the current period, lifting the FA Cup, Cup Winners Cup, Super Cup, League Cup... Legend.

Zola, one of the greatest and arguably the most entertaining player to ever pull on a Chelsea shirt, legend.

Eidur?

Cult hero. Same as Lebouef for me.

Legend status like FC says should be reserved for the very best. Going back you'd have the likes of Kerry Dixon, Ossie, Chopper, Bonetti, Bentley, Tambling, Hollins and maybe Cooke and McCreadie (going by the stories I heard).

Wisey does appear to split fans these days and I have to say, I fall into the camp who wouldn't class him as a legend.

Good player and skippered the side well and lifted trophies but not enough to be a legend. And since he left, he has tarnished things somewhat and I hear him talking more affectionately about his crazy gang days than his time with us.

Well I'm biased because he was the first player that I fell in love with as a fan when I started going to matches back in '96.

But the way I see it he spent over a decade at the club and was captain for a long period of that. Captained the team to 4 trophies and a Charity Shield victory. Captained the side in our maiden season in the Champions League and scored one of our greatest ever goals scored in that competition.

Despite the influx of talent such as Guillet, Di Matteo, Poyet, Deschumps he raised his game and never looked out of place in the side so much so he was even player of the year in 99/00.

I've not followed him much since he retired from playing but the likes of Jody Morris and John Terry always speak highly of what an asset he was to them whilst at the club.

Wisey not a legend? What?

Of those I didn't mention (and that I can think of) from my time watching Chelsea

Cult heroes;

Ediur (pains me to say)

Hasselbaink

Desailly

Lebeouff

Poyet

Legends

Vialli (our second most successful manager)

Di Matteo

Zola

It's so hard to think on the spot lol

Might ruffle a few feathers this one because he is percieved by many to be a c**t these days but...

Mark Hughes is a cult hero for me, he was a great player for us. I'll always remember the game against Liverpool on the way to winning the cup in 97, 2-0 down at half time, he comes on and his sheer presence just changed the game in our favour.

Agreed 100%

Chopper Harris is a legend

Agree. Also a few of the others of that era e.g. Charlie Cooke Of recent times, Ashley Cole.

Cult heroes: Pat Nevin and David Speedie. Agree about Mark Hughes. That game in 97 is one of the greatest.

Nibs at leicester, wednesday nite, we was singing the dennis wise song, you don't have songs sung about you, about  goals that were scored 15 years unless you are a legend!

Fair Point!

I guess I just can't get away from the fact that as i say, I hear him big up his Crazy Gang days more than CFC and of course his connections since with Millwall & Leeds.
