Club Legend or Cult Hero

examples of cult heroes for me would be Kalou and Schurrle. loved both of those players, though i can understand why many may not have.

For me Schurrle wasn't here long enough to be considered that but each to their own

IMHO Wayne Bridge should be considered a Cult Hero. Ok so what he had a lil' spat w/ JT, but his goal in Highbury should immortalize his time w/ our club.

Wayne+Bridge+Chelsea+v+Burnley+Carling+C

The outrage among the Chelsea fans that I know upon hearing that we were signing England's best young left back, as well as Ashley taking so long to ingratiate himself with us was a testament to how good Bridge was. How it all ended was disappointing but I suppose ultimately solidified Bridge as a cult hero.

I agree robdog, also who an forget that goal at Highbury

oooh I just remember the song:

Follow, follow, follow,There was only two minutes to go,It was Wayne Bridge's goal, that sent us out of control,And sent the Arsenal out the Euro...

and you get double your pleasure

Oh Wayne Bridge,

Scored a f*cking great goal,

In the Highbury sh*t hole,

Two minutes to go...

Sorry but I think that's pure bollocks, Wise is a Chelsea legend, he captained the side to so much silverware in one of our most succesful periods. He as instrumental in that success to not just a participant. A player doesn't have to have been world class to be a legend, Matt Le Tissier is a Southampton legend and he certainly wasn't world class. To be a legend you have to have been instrumental and done something more for a specific football club whether that's taking them to success or been that teams most important player, you become a legend. By your analogy only specific players can be considered legends due to their talent level.

You are probably right BUT the legend status is probably thrown to players a bit too easy. It is easy to give that to Zola, JT, Lampard, Drogba and some of the older guys you older chaps know but if you start giving it to a player like Wise who by merit is miles behind these in any category. I love Wise don't get me wrong he was one of the most entertaining players to watch becuase he was insane basically but on footballing merits alone not in the same class. We had some brilliant players in the Wise-era and he was naturally part of it. I call him a cult hero because of his nature and charisma you can call him a legend if you will. He is more of a cult-legend if that means anything [emoji1]

Insane?

He was a lovely, underrated footballer who could spray a ball from the middle of the pitch as well as anyone on his day. Yes he could get stuck in but he had great technique, good vision and an amazing engine.

Taking his kid up to collect the cup was a beautiful moment too - bonafide legend of this club.

I remember him ripping off his shirt in some european game [emoji1] he was a bit insane as a player. Fair enough. Lets not get stuck on Wise. Always loved him but wont put him in the same category as the formerly mentioned.

I understand what you're saying and I actually agree that legend is thrown around too much nowadays.

But Wisey for me is a pure legend, when I started following Chelsea in the mid 90s, he was probably the one on the pitch I saw that I knew stood out. He was my first Mr Chelsea, everything about him just felt like he was already a legend.

Flop

I realised today that the last time we won the title was the season before he joined, and the first season after he leaves we win it again. Who knows how many titles in the last 4 years we lost through that.

So let me ask you two, will Wise be remember as a member of the Crazy Gang or Captain of Chelsea? I say the latter, but I admit I do view life via Blue tinted spectacles.

Wise is definitely more remembered for Chelsea than Wimbledon and a lot of that is because he spent more time in the limelight here. He won only the FA Cup with Wimbledon yet here he captained us to two FA Cups, a league cup, a Community Shield, A Cup Winners Cup and a Super Cup. Not to mention he showed what he could do in the CL here also. The guy is a pure Chelsea legend and if you said whose Mr Chelsea the answer would always be him or Terry.

I'd have to add Makélélé to the legends list, thinking about it, other cult hero's would have to be Duff and possibly Kalou, I'm just fond of Kalou and we possibly sold him to early, though I doubt many people would agree. Other players not mentioned might be Gary Locke, Nigel Spackman, Micky Droy, David Webb, Peter Houseman, also Terry Venables and I'm not sure if Ray Wilkins was mentioned.

My problem with Kalou is he never fulfilled his potential, he really came on towards the end of the 2009-10 season but then he just faded again. A real shame cause the potential and talent were there.

A cult hero is somebody, not necessarily the best player but not exclusive to average players, who produced iconic moments on or off the pitch but no where near at the same regularity as the legends.

We'll all agree on the legends (there or there abouts). I'm only going to mention those that I've seen. So having said that, my 7 legends are JT, Zola, Frank, Drogba, Wise, RDM and Jose.

After that you have a tier of very good players, relative to their eras. These are the likes of Eidur, Flo, Desailly, Makelele, Cole, Cech, Carvalho, Vialli, JFH, Ballack, Essien, Joe Cole, Ivanovic, Cudicini and Poyet.

Now onto cult heroes. We all have different cult heroes for specific reasons. My list:

Wayne Bridge- OK, it ended in tears (his specifically), but that goal vs Arsenal wi never ever be topped for me.

Gronkjaer- Goal vs Liverpool.

Belleti- Cult hero before he arrived and came up with the odd spectacular goal for us.

Damien Duff- Not here long enough, created electric moments in two seasons when he was unplayable.

Kalou- one of my cult heroes, came up with some big moments despite being largely underwhelming

David Luiz- Just a clown, his first five games or so were incredible.

Ramires- again two very big goals despite being extremely underwhelming.

Torres- also in the flop category, but he did create one of our most iconic moments.

Ferreira- Here for ages and a class act.

Somebody like Hazard is on his way to the 'Mt. Rushmore' if he stays long enough. Somebody like Cahill will probably end up in none of the categorys and Costa probably in the very good player list. Fabregas is arguably already a cult hero, because he plays for us instead of Arsenal.

The thing is, a club could easily have more cult heroes, but it always seems to be the same players who come up with the big moments. That is the case for most clubs to be fair, but how often was it RDM, Drogba, Terry or Frank with the big moments?
