John Stones

Featured Replies

Otamendi moved for 45 million Euro. Is older, foreign and hs never played in the prem. Kalas is nowere near Stones. Christensen could get to that level, right now hes not even close and its no guarantee he ever will reach it

Because we can actually win the league that we play in? Madrid are obviously a top side but they haven't been that successful or late bar the CL win and I can't see that changing as long as barca are around.

Also we are (narrowly) even less of a circus!

He's not a nailed on starter every week there as far as I'm aware, they rotate the 3 of them. Here he'd be pretty much guaranteed to play pretty much all of ours IMO.

Plus Jose or FSW?

Lol, be a bit realistic mate. He is not even available. They will never sell him and if we want them to reconsider, it will cost us a lot more than 40m£.

Madrid have just as much or maybe more chance of winning La Liga than we do the EPL due to the lack of competition in Spain. Realistically it’s between 2 (Atletico have done well recently but I think it’s more or less down to two) while in our league it could be Arsenal, City, United, Ourselves and then you have the lives of Liverpool.

As for Europe Real usually are always there or thereabouts and they won the thing the year before last so I don’t see how that would benefit him moving to us either.

He plays for one of if not the biggest club in world football, like it or not they are bigger than us in every single aspect other than the manager now. Players don’t tend to leave Madrid in their pomp if they are being played, especially young ones with the world at their feet like Varane who knows Pepe is coming to the end of his best days and he will be the future of the Madrid defence…he already is playing more and more in any case.

There really is no footballing reason for him to leave them and other than Jose I don’t see any reason why he would either.

It’s a pipe dream that will not happen.

The unfortunate thing in this saga is the bad blood which may be created between ourselves and Everton. Who still to this day are one of the original bigger clubs in England and have had pretty good relations with us in the past

I agree that it's unlikely to happen but what have we possibly got to lose from trying?

You say they have as much chance but look at the last 5 years, there's been once Madrid won it and that was with Jose in charge. IMO it'll be a while before they dethrone barca again.

I think the pull of Jose could turn any players head, they had a great relationship while he was there did they not?

I didn't at any point say it would happen, but there is absolutely nothing to lose from putting a bid in for him in the same region as the price we're apparently going to for stones.

We are starting to look mugs in this dealing, why go back in with only 30 mill, everyone knows its a minimum 34 mill, pay the money or walk away, if Citeh suddenly chuck 40 mill at him, expect a melt down of Chernobyl proportions!!

Alright, here to put an Evertonian's view-point on this, without 'blue-tinted specs'.

John Stones is one of the brightest English talents, think we can all agree on this.

Also, as many of your posters have pointed out, the opening bid of £20mil was never going to get him - and the general consensus from anyone with half a brain cell is that the bid was to attempt to get Stones to indicate he wanted to leave. This didn't happen, and so the bigger bids have come in.

Stones IS already good enough to command a record fee for an English defender, especially when you take into consideration that Ferdinand's transfer was in 2002, and with how mad the transfer market has gone over the last few seasons.

Most Evertonians are realistic to know that Stones' true market value is probably around £30-35mil. However, he's one of our best players and we are in no need to sell. Factor in the English premium, Stones himself being happy to stay at a club where he is going to be a key player this season and, finally, the fact that we have said HE IS NOT FOR SALE, then surely it is not hard to understand why we are rejecting these bids, and why most fans would not be happy with anything under the £50million mark. Added to this is also the fact that you set your own benchmark when selling Luiz to PSG. Stones is a better defender than Luiz ever will be - but yet you still managed to milk PSG for all they were worth as Luiz is a global name and a marquee signing. While Stones is by no means the most prominent player in the Prem, he would be a marquee signing - as he is being touted as a future England skipper and your long-term Terry replacement.

I, along with a lot of our fanbase, have no issue with rich clubs bidding for our better players. It happens. However, I think what's really ticked the club and fanbase off with this is the total disregard/lack of respect shown by Chelsea in this instance. It's nothing that needs to be taken to heart, but it's all being very public, while the London-centric media refuse to let the issue be dropped.

I'm sure you'll put in another bid of £35mil soon enough. I hope, and think, that it will be rejected. I repeat, we have no need to sell. We've got a bit of money to spend ourselves (not much, but enough to get the two players we need to improve the squad for our aims this season). Stones will be worth more next year, and don't kid yourselves, he's worth every penny.

I'd assume a club of our size would have already enquired about several targets relating to CB's and the ones we know Jose was keen on such as Varane are simply not an option which means Stones is our primary target in this area.

I'm not so sure about Barcelona dominating, their backline is a shambles and they are conceding goals for fun 9 goals in 3 games so far. They might get that sorted but as things stand they are by no means unstoppable.

We would only bid on a player if we thought we had a chance, it's clear we don't with Varane.

So Man City have agreed a deal with Valencia to buy Otamendi for 32m£. Looking at that deal, 35m£ for Stones isn't that strange.

Alternative: just buy Mangala.

Good post to be fair.  Re.Luiz I think PSG are just absolutely bat sh*t mental. I even expect them to be the first club to pay £100m for a player. No one doubts Stones' quality, I watched him v Saints on Saturday and he was a rock.

I just hate the English premium put on players (im looking at you Raheem) and think right now after roughly 1 and a half seasons in your first team? ( i may be wrong) That £35m is perhaps a bit too steep when foreign players of arguably as good ability, or a slight better are cheaper or same price. Although a fellow poster pointed out he has 4yrs left on his deal so that is a factor.

I think the 2nd offer to go from 20 to 26 was a silly offer after a "not for sale" statement was made by RM. Should have been straight up to £30m with this current 3rd one being the £35m one.  It may not seem it but I dont mind Everton as a club, and feel sorry for their fans having Kenwright not putting a lot of money in, or what seems to be a lack of investment and afterall Everton as i said are one of the original big clubs in England.

Wouldnt surprise me if we put all our eggs in one basket and were convinced we would get Stones, we did exactly the same with Rooney.

That was f**king ridiculous lol.  I remember a Utd fan in work at the time saying to me if Ferguson was boss, Rooney would have been a Chelsea player

United had to pay a huge fee over 10 years ago for Ferdinand because they knew he had huge potential and looked a class act in the EPL for Leeds.

We either pay it or move on...that said we move on to what? with less than 2 weeks to go we have boxed ourselves in.

Surely it's time to move on now or we are going to spend all summer on a guy we aren't going to get. That and the fact £30+ million is based on potential and the fact he is English.

Who knows if he'll even ever live up to the potential, plenty of players don't, Phil Jones for example.

Little off topic but Bristol City might be signing a player from Brentford for EIGHT MILLION POUNDS.  Jesus

Anyway, if all our eggs aren't in the Stones basket, who else could we realistically go for at the 30m ish mark

I agree on the premium and Sterling, but it's there, so obvioulsy any club will exploit it, just like how you exploited PSG's mental policy.

What has annoyed a lot of Evertonians is the constant media speculation - even now we've got Andy Gray on the radio saying Stones will go. Why? He's not indicated he wants to go, we don't want to sell and they all seem to forget that it's not a risk for us to keep him. it's not like he's in his prime and will go downhill quickly, as you've said he's only played for us consistently for 1 and a half years. It's not ridiculous at all to think that, next summer, when he'll likely be in the Euro squad, that we could demand a starting bid of £40mil, especially with the added TV Money as well.

As for the Kenwright debate, most sensible supporters know he's not a bad guy, but the current board are allowing the club to stagnate - taking a lot of money out with no investment. That's a debate for another forum, obviously, but the best thing to come form it in the short term, for me, is that it makes it very difficult for the board to justify selling Stones. The EFC fanbase is very split on it, but i think Stones' sale for anything under a 'Sterling-style' fee, would make a lot turn on mass.

Even though Stones is by no means the finished article, he's one of the most complete defenders around at the moment for his age. I can guarantee to the fans of whatever club he eventually leaves us for, whenever that may be, they will not regret paying the big-bucks for him.

The Sun are claiming that Everton will do business at £35m. If that's the case then hurry up and get the deal done.

£5 million is nothing if we really want him.

The dicking around is pretty annoying though and the more we do it the more reluctant they will be to sell to us.

The reporters have been making a lot of this up as they go along, mate. Being one myself, I understand, they need to sell papers/click-bait. When EFC rejected the first bid, the papers said £25mil would do it. Low and behold, when that was rejected, they said £30mil-34mil. Nope, that won't do it either.

I think if Chelsea come in with bid of £35mil by Friday, then it may not be rejected out of hand, though I hope it will be. But, if you leave it late, which wouldn't give us chance to get better replacements in - which even with money we wouldn't definitely be able to attract because of a lack of European football - then i think he'll stay or you'll have to pay a huge sum (talking 40-50mil).

I always suspected IF you sold Stones it would be a Kenwright and board decision and not Martinez. I could be miles wrong though.

Welcome to the forum btw

Yep totally agree and the fact is transfer fees in general have gone crazy so it's not all that surprising but just massively risky.

It must not be a deadline day thing. It puts both clubs in a more or less lose-lose position with Everton having the infinitely stronger hand and power. And the losing position it'd put you in is the one you mentioned, little time to find a replacement, and attracting said players

And with us, we could end the window wihtout our main target or A.N.other CB
