John Stones

35-40 million for a centre back that could turn out to be average.

Jesus christ, we don't even need a centre back as our most pressing upgrade, bring in some depth into midfield. Think of the quality we could get for that sort of money.

I always suspected IF you sold Stones it would be a Kenwright and board decision and not Martinez. I could be miles wrong though.

Welcome to the forum btw

Definitely.

I think RM basically knows that realistically, if he carries on his current speed of development, we could only hold onto Stones until 2016 or, at a push, 2017. But he would be loath to lose him now, and if he did go this summer it's definitely a board decision. It would be the straw that broke the camel's back I think, given all the recent media debates about us.

And cheers

He won't turn out to be average. Gary Cahill is average - Stones honestly will be up there with the best.

Do you think that perhaps when the window ends or in January, Stones or his agent may say "right you turned down 30m or whatever for me, i want a pay rise"

Right now John Stones is not one of the worlds best defenders. If we pay 35-40 million for someone that very well may just end up as good as Cahill, then it is a total f**k up. I'm sure Stones will be a good defender, but good defenders can be got around the 10 million mark, in fact its usually the cheapest position on the pitch to fill.

Very rarely do English players actually live up to the hype. Last summer Barkley was being mentioned as being touted at the 40 million quid mark and look what he's done in the year since.

Isn't Stones already a better defender than Cahill? Or at least on par. And he's 8 years younger...

United had to pay a huge fee over 10 years ago for Ferdinand because they knew he had huge potential and looked a class act in the EPL for Leeds.

We either pay it or move on...that said we move on to what? with less than 2 weeks to go we have boxed ourselves in.

Ferdinand is not a good comparison. The similarities stop at them both being english. Ferdinand had far more experience, more games in the league and was a top performer in Europe.

I would rather we focused on Zouma and have the 4th CB be one of our youths to be honest.

I wouldn't consider him any better than Cahill, if Cahill was 21 he'd be getting as much hype as Stones in all likelihood.

Of course, but Cahill isn't 21, he's 29. That means Cahill is unlikely to improve, while Stones has many years to go before he reaches his peak.

Agree completely. In Zouma we already have arguably the best young CB in the league, while we have Christensen and Kalas who are both very highly rated and could do well if given the chance.

And even if we do need to bring in someone else to play next to Zouma in a few years, lets remember that our current starting back 4 of Dave, Terry, Cahill and Ivanovic (considered the best back 4 in the league) cost a combined 23 million pounds.

A better player but not a better defender, mainly cause he lacks the experience Cahill has and is still naive.

What about Rooney then?

Stones has class way beyond his years just like the players I mentioned.

He's clearly not another Phil Jones, Jones never looked half as good as Stones has during his time at Everton.

Jose clearly wants him and I can see why.

To be fair, that's a whole lot of money to bet on just potential.

Right now potential is what we have to gamble on. If our defence remains the way it is we're going to concede far too many. Everton are of course pushing until we break and say TAKE OUR 40 and SHUTUP!

Though I think we should be focusing at buying another capable midfielder. I think someone to support Matic?

As for a striker we have enough. For me it's about being able to supply them with enough chances.

Though this is all null if we can't prevent other teams putting 2 0r 3 goals past us every game.

To put the fee into context is only £4 million a year over next ten years, stop fluffing around and pay the darn money.

Because of this we will pay for every player over the odds,if his price is 20 mill we will pay 40 and etc.Every club knows we have money and they will push every players price over the edge.We can afford it but for how long will we pay over the odds?

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 15 years you know that Chelsea have money, this isnt some huge secret we are trying to protect

BBC chief sport correspondent saying Everton will reject the newest bid but doesn't suggest one way or the other if we'll submit a further bid or if Everton would likely accept.

Evening Standard's Simon Johnson who has long predicted us trying to sign Stones is saying we're willing to go up to £35m for Stones.

The Sun are saying we look likely to sign Stones for £35m.

So basically it's anyone's guess what the f**k is going on at this point.

Of course it isn't,but just because we have money do we need to pay huge amounts for certain players that are not worth that much? Since other teams can get them at a much lower price.I am pointing out that in a way we are forced to pay over the odd's because other clubs know we will pay it.

He's not far off defensively. Stones is by no means the finished product, but I don't think Aguero will skin Stones like he did Cahill on sunday, for example. Also, Stones is better than Zouma. Zouma's class, like, but for me Stones is the step ahead in his development.

I really dont believe Everton or any other club for that matter would hold us to a greater ransom then they would anyone else. They have their evaluation and they are sticking to it. And if we end up "paying over the odds" for Stones it certainly wont mean the next player we could have bought for 20 mill is bow going to cost 40. Thats just not how business works

Do you think that perhaps when the window ends or in January, Stones or his agent may say "right you turned down 30m or whatever for me, i want a pay rise"

If he stays then I think we'll offer him a pay-rise around October time.

The only reason we haven't done so already, IMO, is that it would indicate we are worried or that Stones has said he wants to go.

At this moment in time we've rejected all bids, and Stones hasn't said he wants to leave, so no need to make a bigger fuss really. But yeh, I wouldn't be surprised if we offered him a new contract/his agent asked for one. He's on approx. £30k a week at the moment. If he stays we should stump that up by an extra 20k. We'll get that money back when we sell him anyway.

Stones himself though is by all accounts a dead sensible lad. He's happy to stay at Everton, but i'm sure if Everton accepted a bid, he'd also happily play for Chelsea. But he's in no rush to leave.

Exactly mate. If it were Man Utd or City or Arsenal, it'd be exactly the same.

Stones' value to EFC at the moment is around the £40mil mark. Over the odds, probably, but that's what he's worth to us. We're in the position of power in this situation, at the moment, as Stones hasn't tried to force the move. hopefully it stays that way from our POV.
