Romelu Lukaku

I agree selling him wasn't the worse decision at the time. But no putting in buy back clauses for players with high potential, particularly with Lukaku who was already looking good in the premier league, was very poor. Even if we didn't receive as big of a fee, even if we only bought him back to sell him on again, like madrid are close to doing with morata, it was a no brainer. Hopefully we don't make the same mistake again.

I might be wrong, however I think I read that we have a sell on clause with Lukaku.

So although it's not a buy back, presumably whatever fee we (might) agree with Everton, they will owe us a percentage of it back.

For arguments sake it's 20%, if we buy Lukaku for £80m, we'll only pay £64m.

I also read that apparently Everton also still owe us money from when they bought Lukaku, so presumably that would be deducted from any fee as well.

So although the fee we agree with Everton might be club record it might be that in truth we pay a lot less. (But who knows how fees are actually structured and agreed)

Similar situation as luiz which makes me think club purchase based on economics more that contes top pick

Hope we get Lukaku, Tolisso, Bakayoko, Conti soon. Finish our business early so that these players can get a whole pre-season and the understanding of the formation/Conte-methods.

I somehow feel one of Pedro/willian is out and we are moving to a 3-5-2.

Also, cant wait for us to get Lukaku. Will be a fun day. Also, would permanently end the horror reign of that troll..

Hopefully Lukaku signs for us and not Man United! They will win everything otherwise, Lukaku would surpass, C.Ronaldo, George Best, Bobby Charlton and Cantona if he goes there!

So because one is better at something that the other is sh*t at it makes a devastating striking partnership? Righto, think there might be a but more to it than that. You could even play someone like say hazard with a striker like Lukaku who can compensate fot far more of the attributes he lacks, nothing at all to indicate Lukaku and morata would be a good partnership, was unsure how people arrive at these conclusions hence I asked, still unsure.

There is obviously more to it than what I have written I thought I would keep it short and not write an essay given it isn't a topic I am overly fussed about as it is something i think is unlikely to come about, (we would need a formation change, costa would need to leave and it may not suit Hazard to play behind a 2), and further I would have thought people would apply their own intuaition to the situation.

I agree with you on hazard I think he would work well as a second striker off of either of Costa, Lukaku or Morata, it is something I would like to see more of next season.

I will also expand a little bit more why I think a Morata - Lukaku partnership would work, just to help you understand where I was coming from, won't go into too much extra detail as I would rather enjoy my beer and the lovely view (I am currently on holiday in lisbon) but here goes.

I think each players 'weakness' (all relative obviously i dont think either player is sh*t at any particular area of their game) is matched by the other as a strength which means that collectively as a partnership there isnt an overall weakness to their collective game, which will help a lot in making a successful partnership.

I can also see their play styles matching up quite well, which I think will help move defenses about to creat space. I think Lukaku is better trying to get in behind and that Morata looks better coming deeper collecting the ball and linking up play this will in its self open up room for Lukaku to run into but also the hypothetical man behind i.e. Hazard allowing him to burst through I also think Morata has the ability to make this pass which I don't think Lukaku or Costa could do.

I think this partnership would work really well in a 4-3-1-2 or a 3-4-1-2 with attacking wing backs.

Whilst I obvioulsy haven't seen it in practice I think theoretically it could work and lukaku's recent showing with Bats and Morata's showing in a 2 at Juve gives me confidence that it could work.

Going into the season with Lukaku, Morata and Batsuayi would be very strong in my opinion and gives us lots of options. Don't see it happening though and personally I prefer Costa to both Morata and Lukaku as a lone striker.

After reading the rumors, the guy has already gone bonkers (more than usual bonkers).

Cant wait when we actually get him. Will be a fun day

As I said I have you on a piece of string. :laugh2: You must think about me constantly day and night. :laugh2:

What makes you think that? If we sign him I will just have to significantly lower my expectations for next season.

You are obsessed, and didn't you say you had me on your ignore list? :laugh2: that didn't last long did it? Again proving how much I have you on a piece of string.

Oh how i've missed you, Pacquiao :crigon_01:

As with every potential signing...I feel bizarre mixes of optimism and pessimism. On one hand, I think, Lukaku might not be the right fit for us, on the other hand, there's no denying on his day he's as good as any striker. Amazing strength, surprising speed...an aerial threat...a lethal left foot. If we get him, I'll be nervous, but I also wouldn't be able to hide the excitement that his potential would give us.

It would not be dissimilar to how I felt when we got Torres. I thought we overpaid for a striker who hadn't been at his best for a while...but on the other hand, it was Fernando bloody Torres, and he was the best striker in the league and supposedly in his prime (age wise). Lets hope whoever our striker signing is will see the optimistic possibilities shine through rather than the pessimistic ones.

You did?

I was like "Good riddance". I hoped he had found a new club to support/troll.

Coming from the person who wanted Costa to flop against West Ham back in August, but instead he scored a last minute winner! :laugh2: you must have been gutted when that went in.

I'm also just outside Lisbon at the moment, have a holiday home and my father here btw. Will leave for a break in Troia in 2 weeks ( That's the peninsula just across the water from where a certain ex manager of ours grew up)  As for the football stuff,  if you have a big somewhat clumsy lukaku, you need a fast flair player to get things moving, especially in transition, Morata is quick but not when compared to Hazard, Pedro, Willian, it seems like an option with no value, making more problems than it solves, like you said probably wont happen.

Ahh nice are you here long term or just on break, really enjoying it here it's ashame tomorrow is my last day.

Agree with you on the fast and nimble front it's why I don't think they would work well in a 4-4-2 and think it would need a fast nimble player in the hole behind them to make it work well, luckily we have an abundance of those and with hazard there I could see a Carlo level of goals scored.

But given I really don't see us spendending north of 130 mil on strikers maybe even if Costa leaves, weay have to get used to Lukaku's poor first touches rather than Costa's.

Enjoy the rest of your time in Portugal, I know I am going to be having a few more cutard tarts before I leave.

Yea I'm here until August, I hear JT holidays here every year, said it on a recent interview, and yes teh custard tarts, good stuff, people are so friendly makes me wonder how Jose has that spoiled brat attitude

All this banter and talk..I really don't know why we would want to pay 100 million for him, yes he is still raw, yes he is inconsistent and sometimes lazy and yes he scores but...the world had gone nuts...I just can't see this happening not at that price anyway and he will not want to play second fiddle to Costa.

I don't understand what the problem is here.  Lukaku wants to be here, it's so obvious.  In my mind, he's been in exile this entire time at Everton.  The prodigal son returns.

As far as the price, yes, it might be steep, but it's not coming out of my pockets, is it?

Following Costas comments today that Conte has sacked him I think it's very clear that Lukaku is coming.

Hope it works well. The lad has clearly done a lot since he's been at Everton notwithstanding that he isn't perfect.

Hope he stays fit and works hard.

It's all going pear-shaped for you isn't it. After all these months deluding yourself that Conte would not want Lukaku as first choice and how we he would want Morata out the two, seems Conte's first choice is Lukaku and Morata is going United. And Costa, another of your idol seems not wanted by Conte for whatever reasons. Maybe you jinxed yourself. Someone is going to be forced to eat humble pie I suspect if/when Lukaku arrives. But you prob will claim it was the board who forced the move and not Conte right?

Pear shaped based on what? You actually think Lukaku will be 1st choice striker for Chelsea! Oh dear! :laugh2:
