Chelsea's greatest doubles

Featured Replies

So as a club we have only ever done what is deemed as 'The Double' (Premier League and FA Cup) once in our history, but with the FA Cup final tomorrow we have the chance to (hopefully) complete 'The Double' for the second time in our history. Well it got me thinking, what are our greatest doubles and which one is your favourite (if I have missed any let me know). Also any great memories from us winning any of these doubles:

1997-98 League Cup, Cup Winners Cup

2004-05 League Cup, Premier League

2006-07 League Cup, FA Cup

2009-10 Premier League, FA Cup

2011-12 FA Cup, Champions league.

2014-15 League Cup, Premier League

Oo a tough one, I'll "narrow" it down to three.

97/98- First European trophy since 71, Zola coming off the bench was magic

09/10- The best attacking team we've had, scoring 6 or 7 seemed par for the course. Carlo an absolute gent as well.

11/12- For sheer improbability this probably comes out on top. In February it looked like our season was over, 3-1 down against Napoli. The rest is history!

I always consider the Premier League and FA cup as THE double, and the league cup makes the treble, with European cups making the quadruple. I'm not just saying that because were on the verge of THE double, but just because that's how it was growing up. The FA cup final was the only live football on TV all year up until the late 80s, so that made it the most important part of any double. Now times have changed maybe the Premier League and CL are the ultimate double, as far as financial rewards anyway.

So i would pick 2009-10 Premier League, FA Cup first, then 2011-12 FA Cup, Champions league.

2011-12

It turned a sh*t season into an amazing season. It started with us beating Napoli 4-1, then we beat Tottenham 5-1, then that 2-2 draw with Barcelona, then we beat Liverpool 2-1 in the F.A cup final and won the Champions League on pens against ( a German side ) Bayern Munich at their home ground. it was just the perfect ending to a season.

My Top Three

1) 1997-98

2) 2011-12

3) 2009-10

I didn't want to post my thoughts in the first post but I will list my top three. I know it's probably sacrilege to not have the season where we won the European Cup at the top but I enjoyed the double aspect more in 97-98 as it was a time when we weren't expected to win anything. Yet here we were winning two major trophies. I didn't think we could better the 1996-97 season with test FA Cup win but we did. The 97-98 season will probably always be my favourite season. I feel the 11-12 season which was awful before sacked AVB the European Cup overshadowed everything including the FA Cup win whereas 97-98 the two trophies complimented each utter. Also although 2009-10 is my favourite title win (and I don't wanna come off spoilt here) the fact we didn't do better than 1-0 against Portsmouth and Lampard missing that penalty always kind of put a bit of a stint in that cup win. Infact 2010 is probably my least favourite of our Abramovich era FA Cup wins just looking at it in perspective of the match itself, the opponents and the result.

Traditionalist here too. The proper double was so rare when I was growing up, so to achieve that in 2009/10 was the ultimate.

Fav final though has to be 1970 replay. First taste of glory. Funny thing was Leeds were heading for and favorites for the treble that year and ended up with nowt.

Yeah in 1970 we beat Leads to win the FA Cup, Everton won the League and Celtic beat them in the semi final of the European Cup.

Still chuckle over it. We all hate Leeds and Leeds and Leeds......

2004/05 was our best team IMO, but 2011/12 felt more special to me because of winning the Champions league, we were the underdogs throughout, the turnaround against Napoli, that crazy night in the Nou camp, that Torres goal, and of course the final in Bayern's own backyard. it was so epic the way we did it.

Oh yeah and the fact we denied Spurs a place in the champions league the following season made it just that bit more sweet. :laugh2:

Jinxing does not exist, do people honestly believe any actions we take effect the team? Superstition is daft as hell. We list the Cup final failing to win a double because the team did not perform.

The thread was to build excitement and hype for the cup final, same as a TV documentary or an opinion piece etc.

Totally agree, i suppose the superstitious amongst us think we won the league because nobody started a thread titled 'wer'e going to win the league', and has nothing to do with how well the team played over a season.
