Chelsea Christmas pressies from yesteryear.

Featured Replies

As it's December,I am just wondering what Chelsea Christmas presents you used to get ?

Okay general football presents like football annuals, books and other such presents can be included.

The Umbro Chelsea boxed set strip from the late 1970s was brilliant.

Shoot,Topical Times and International Football Book were regulars too.

Oh and I remember receiving a Southampton yellow and blue 'admiral' away strip from one of my aunts' ! To this day I have no idea why?!

Simon inglis football grounds book, still got it, saw it the other day in a box, sad many of those old grounds with character have been bulldozed to make way for soulless bowls, blue and white bar scarf and bobble hat, only prob was living in Sussex people thought it was brighton, and as you ersk the Chelsea umbro strip with diamonds down the side.

There was a shop on the top floor of the Arndale Centre in Wandsworth that was brilliant for Chelsea stuff in the 70's.

Scarves, sew on badges, pennants etc. Sometime around 79 I received a blue and yellow triangular pennant for Xmas ( for a while blue and yellow almost took over from blue and white as our colours on stuff I remember?)   As mentioned football annuals were a common Xmas present- I collected then for a bit- probably got up to about 30 from jumble sales and the like- Charles Buchan was a good one.

The coverage of Chelsea diminished as we got worse through the 70's- I'm not sure what annual it was in but there was a feature on Chelsea's H- Men in one- Hollins, Hutchinson, Harris, Hudson and Hinton.

I remember another article on Micky Droy- he was asked about the influence of fans- said he didn't notice them as much at home due to Shed being a distance from the pitch but they were a big help at vital away games. Stupidly when I moved into my first flat which had no storage I gave all my Annuals away.

I think that Shoot came out on Saturdays?

My older brother used to bring it home from his paper round. He'd have first go, I'd be pestering him to read quicker because I was up next, and my younger brother would go after me. We were firm believers in a pecking order!

When I started Secondary School in 78 I palled up with a couple of twins- one was Chelsea, the other West Ham, and they shared a bedroom. Exactly half of the walls were completely covered in Chelsea posters from Shoot and Match weekly, and the other half was head to toe in West Ham stuff. Whenever they had a barny they'd tear down each other's posters!

My local team growing up were Greenock Morton. They also played in blue and white and had a yellow and blue Umbro change strip in the late 1970s. So I was okay for Chelsea colours. So could get Umbro shorts and socks in Chelsea colours'.

A local sports shop had quite alot of Le Coq Sportif sportswear and they sold Chelsea strips and Le Coq Sportif sportswear. Pretty sure I had a royal and dark blue sports kit bag for Christmas 1983.

I had a scouse step father (which team do you think he supported? Clue they are the victims) so he refused to get me anything to do with Chelsea. I had to buy it all out of pocket money, paper round money, xmas money from Aunts etc.

Hated him then and still do.

Best present i bought myself the umbro boxed kit. Chelsea/Rangers hat, Next was when i was 16 the celery t-shirt lol

I remember getting a Subbuteo Floodlight edition as a kid and needing new batteries very soon after Christmas Day for the floodlights!

Also a France home strip for Christmas 1982.

Did anyone have the navy blue v neck jumper with the original badge embroidered on the chest with the name of your choice underneath! Got it for xmas 82 or 83 looked ok, not as good as my Pringle Lyle and Scott collection!

Yes. They really were excellent. Superb quality badge, navy blue lambswool. Much better than all this Merino crap

Bought my first Pringle in 1982 as well and bought my first bottle of fabric conditioner just to take care of said jumper. If it's the same jumper I'm thinking off there's a photo in one of my old programmes of either Geoff Hurst or Bobby Gould wearing one.

Can't say I got any Chelsea Xmas presents but going to the QPR Boxing day games was great I'm pretty sure there were three two wins and a draw. One thing that has always stayed with me is the game against Fulham it was on Radio 2 (a second division game as the live commentary those were the days) I was 10 years old and it was nerve wracking listening to the game. It certainly affected me as I haven't been able to listen to Chelsea on the radio since. I might turn it on but can only listen for a couple of minutes.

Diamond Pringles were 40 quid in 82. With Lois jeans, Lyle and Scott roll neck, Diadora or Stan Smiths wheels you were looking 100 pounds plus for a standard uniform. That's got to be 400/ 500 pound in today's money?

I used to get a fair few as a kid. I got the away / home t-shirt every year up to when i was 18. I got a Chelsea clock as kid, a Chelsea mug, which broke and was replaced with another one which i'm still using now. I also had a framed picture of us winning the league for the first time in 50 years, i'm not sure where that has gone now though.

Used to get a bundle of Chelsea home programmes from various seasons for Christmas as a kid. From a programme shop that regularly advertised in Shoot magazine back in late 1970s/early 80s.

Bought myself Le Coq Sportif blue and white running spikes with Christmas present money in early 1980s. I admit it was and still is stretching it to say they were anything to do with Chelsea...

I do remember a few of my mates getting Liverpool, Man Utd, Ipswich Town and Forest strips for their Christmas back then. Wonder how many of them still follow these teams now. My parents would go up to Glasgow to Greaves Sports, which was and still is the best sports shop in the West of Scotland. It was like an Aladdin's Cave ' of sporting goods to me as a youngster! They actually had a decent range of Chelsea kit back in the mid 70s - mid 80s.

I was about 10 or 11 ( I`m 50 now) and at Christmas my Nana who was Irish got me a red and white tracksuit ( all red with one white stripe down the arms and legs ) and a red and white football bobble hat and scarf all from woolworths , she knew I was Chelsea mad , I would not mind but she lived in Earlsfield a massive Chelsea area at the time , I think she got confused god bless her ,

I also had Grandparents in Earlsfield. My Grandad started going in the 20's.

Funnily enough I don't think he liked us much when he got old and decrepit. He was always going on about us being rubbish on whatever game he'd seen on the telly, and hated hooligans.

"Stick 'em in a boxing ring and they'd s..t themselves", was a favourite of his

Diamond Pringle jumper, or pale pink Lyle and Scott jumper, electric blue Lois cords, puma g vilas trainers, as a teenager that was the up grade Chelsea present for match days, funny, today 30 odd years on, I might still wear a Lyle and Scott or Fred perry jumper and possibly retro puma trainers to games, but the electric blue cords won't fit any more! and as for my blonde locks Permed at the back, well that's a no no now!!

The Chelsea / Rangers half in half ski hats certainly brings back memories. Remember seeing quite a few of them worn at Ibrox in the mid-late 1980s.

Bought myself a Pringle jersey in early 1987. Cost me £34.95. To put that into perspective,it cost I think £3 to get into the football back then!

It became a bit of a nuclear arms race clobber in the casual years. The main reason I quit A Levels and started work was because I was money hungry for clothes and be able to go to away games.

One thing I thought that looked rotten was Tachini Tracksuits including bottoms. Not a patch on Fila BJ tracksuit tops IMO.

One thing that sticks in my mind- when we played Pompey away back end of 84, there was a geezer sitting opposite me on the train back home- he was about 25, had a boxers face, 5 day stubble ,and looked well hard- he was wearing and orange and black diagonally striped Lacoste jumper which looked the bollox.

He reminded me of a cross between Rocky Marciano and a Bengal Tiger!

yes I use to have a chelsea/rangers ski hat, regarding pringle sweaters, does anyone know if you can get the pringle jumpers with the lion and pringle underneath anymore? mind you I did look on the pringle website and some of their jumpers are 300/400 quid!!!!, funny as a teenager 30 odd years ago happy to pay £40 for one, but then again living at home and no mortgage you could afford it.

Although the 80's casual look is very retro and back in again, with youngsters and the old skool wearing it, you don't see such of a selection of colours around now adays, I am back into the look, but when I go up to the bridge saturday I might wear a black or navy lyle and scott, but turning up in a pink one might get some looks, mind you who dares wins!!!! so if anyone sees someone in pink a lyle and scott and electric blue cords in the Matthew Harding upper Saturday, say hello, and wish me luck
