Unfortunately nobody will even be able to fill the void he left behind. JT was a sorely missed, incredibly strong player, who probably would have acted exactly the same, on the pitch and behind the scenes whether he was captain or not. Ditto Lampard and Drogba. Bobby Moore was captain in 66, surrounded by alpha male types such as Jackie Charlton, Nobby Stiles, Alan Ball and others. You don’t have to wear an armband to carry authority. Somehow I can’t imagine Martin Peters saying to Jack Charlton in the World Cup Final “ Stop telling me what to do. Your not the captain” Substitute 66 for present day and I can’t see any difference. Leaders are leaders, whether they’re skipper or otherwise.

Its not like cricket, where the captain decides who bowls and the fielding placement. Voiciferous players will continue being instructive whether they wear an armband or otherwise, and quiet players will carry on being quiet. Nor are you the managers representative on the field. If the gaffer wants to make a change or send out instructions he’ll simply convey this message by shouting. I've heard that argument when the England captain has been discussed but disagree with it. Sure, you have strong characters / leaders whether they wear the arm-band or not but it's no coincidence so many successful sides HAVE had great captains - us with JT, United with Keane, Arsenal with Adams & Vierra, Liverpool with Souness. Still think you need a good captain for all manor of reasons and the incident on Sunday would have been avoided if we had one. Sarri (or any of the coaching team) certainly weren't able to get a very clear message out!

February 26, 20197 yr I thought the whole point of a forum was debate? Youve yet to spell out the captains role, and why you have to carry an armband to carry out this role. Its quite a simple question.

February 26, 20197 yr I thought Ewell made a good comment on personality types yet when we look at the captains @Nibs mentioned CFC and Utd both captains were vocal and alpha-males with a temper. Adams was similar the only one I saw as being different was Viera who seemed quiet. It would be interesting to know how he motivated the team at that time.

Stop being a big baby. If you’ve started a thread up great, give yourself a pat on the back, however be prepared for people to challenge your view or the validity of the debate in the first place. Does the captain make tactical decisions on the pitch? No the manager does. How does the captain influence the outcome of the game, in a manner separate to any other senior professional on the park? Has anyone ever heard a pundit, fan, journalist or any other Tom, Dick and Harry say “ Well I’m not surprised they lost. They had the wrong bloke as captain” So what else does the captain bring to the table exactly?

February 26, 20197 yr Aside from the annoyance of the whole Sarri / Kepa saga. If they both handle this well, and Sarri is given next year - I can see Kepa becoming Sarri's captain. Obviously the situation showed Kepa made a mistake, but it also showed he's got a strong personality and is ultra competitive - two things we really want our captain to be. This situation could really end up being a blessing - or of course it could blow up in our face. I'm from Cincinnati, OH, (became a Chelsea fan 20 years ago when Charlie Cooke lived here), and a fan of UC basketball. UC had a similar type situation, they lost bad to a rival, got in a big fight at the end of the game, they handled their stuff well, grew from it, and had their best season to finish off under their coach. So far since the incident, I see Sarri handling this as well as possible, and it really has the potential to bring the team together.

I just put it on a more narrow perspective and focused on our current captain. Which actually is Cahill but he's not playing so it's Azpilicueta (need to spell his full last name so that you don't get confused) so I hope that you might see a small problematic there already, no? OK. Now I talk about the character of our captain on the pitch and how he appears to be too much of a nice guy and then list up some previous captains that were less nice in general and had a different attitude when they were captains (something very obvious but again I feel this need to almost repeat why I started this topic). Maybe you don't know much about how John Terry was on and off the pitch, but a good captain has this cool ability to put the rest of the team in order and make them regain or not lose focus, I don't know either if you have been watching Chelsea's games since you seem to be so interested in cricket so much that you mentioned it in your first comment here as if it's somehow relevant but many have noticed that our players often did put their heads down and once they let in one goal it's open season for the rest of the game and nobody was able to change the attitude of the squad as a whole, even Sarri complained about it, saying that the mentality isn't right which was his main thing to complain about...But maybe because you don't seem to see any relevance at all because you come from a standpoint of cricket it looks like a good captain or leader wouldn't make much of a difference...I don't agree really because when the team had a good mindset they were winning duels and 50/50 balls much more often, while when they had nobody to turn to, they looked clueless, and while both scenarios have happened during the same formation this season, I can safely say that it's not the tactics at fault but really a lack of a good moral inside the team. If this was a total bollox of a thread (like most of them according to you, which is strange because if you suffer so much from being on this forum I don't see why you would keep coming back) someone would have pointed it out much sooner than after 4 pages, or a moderator would have simply closed it, as I have seen that happening to some threads made by trolls every now and then. So no, I'm pretty sure you got it all wrong and that this thread was made as a reaction of some of the observations that a fan like myself have noticed after a while, some people liked this topic and many wrote their own insights which I was happy to read, sadly your reaction and behaviour is not worthy of further replies from me so if you still see this thread not viable go ahead and report it and ban me from the forum, thanks in advance. February 26, 20197 yr Lets not forget we had a 18 year old captain in the shape of Ray Wilkins. Pretty sure he wasn't given the armband for his leadership qualities when we had the likes of Harris, Droy and Hay in the team.
February 26, 20197 yr I didn’t think Eden was captain material, but seeing how he reacted in the seconds after City won, I’m starting to think I was wrong. He was the one immediately going around picking the lads back up.

You really are a snowflake of the first order. You seem incredibly offended by the by expressions such as “ bollox”, and “half a brain. “Are you a Sunday School teacher? ( A hypercritical Sunday School teacher who tells people to f..k off and calls them pricks) The cricket analogy is commonly used when England Football Captains are announced- you really loose the plot on this and attempt to crack.a funny about cricket being my first game- Jesus wept as they say- back to the England captain scenario- If I rung by mates up and said, have you heard the news, Harry Kane’s been made England skipper, to a man they would remark - who gives a ...., just as Chelsea mates wouldn’t give a .... who was nominated to carry our armband. ( by the way, when the debate occurs over the importance or otherwise of who is the England captain, the consensus amongst ex pros is that it’s not a big deal) JTs not around anymore. Get over it. We are lacking leaders and authority figures, but pinning a badge on someone ain’t gonna make a figs difference. You can name Rudiger captain, put him up for another largely ceremonial position such as Lord Mayor of London if you want. He’s alteady on the park doing it- does he need a tattoo in his forehead saying “ keep calm and carry on”, or “ I’m in charge”.... Keep getting offended for all I care, or better still come back when you’ve grown a couple.
February 26, 20197 yr Of course you don't need to be a captain in order to be a leader, but if you're going to select a captain you better pick a leader. What's the value of a captain? Depends on the squad.... with some squads, including some in our club's recent past, you could ask the very same question regarding the manager. They are positions that can make no difference, and all the difference. ..... I feel like Saladin at the end of Kingdom of Heaven now..... Edited February 26, 20197 yr by Barry Bridges
