Ian Porterfield dies

Sad news

Safe to say he wasn't our greatest ever manager but seemed a genuinely nice bloke.

Maybe his greatest moment was scoring the winning goal in the FA cup final for Sunderland. The opposition that day? Leeds - as Chelsea fans we should rejoice him for that alone!!

Farewell to another blue.

The BBC describe him as a Sunderland legend, which is fair enough. I was there at Wembley that day when he scored the goal that beat Leeds, and that alone would be enough for the man to be looked on with fondness by most Chelsea supporters.

R.I.P.

Don't know if anyone else saw Ian on CFCTV in July, but the respect shown by Jason Cundy to the "Guv'nor" gave an insight into how he was rated as a coach by the players.

Yeah I saw that, Tim. I'm usually quick to pick up on anyone being ill (remember being shocked at the sound of Bobby Moore's voice on Capital Radio days before he died) but Porterfield seemed fine just a couple of months ago - this is a real shock.

As a 40-something, the 1973 cup final is one of my fondest football memories, not just because it was Leeds, but because it was a fantastic occasion, the underdog triumphing over the dour, ultra-professional machine. Me and the old man went bonkers when Ians shot hit the back of the net - will always remember the look of delight on his face, with his arms as high above his head as they could possibly be. Sleep well, Ian.

Sad news indeed..I remember seeing him on chelsea tv a few months ago too...it's amazing that only three weeks ago he was in charge of armenia getting a superb draw against portugal...just shows how he wouldn't let his illness get in the way of his love of football...I remember his time in charge, not the best footy but it was the old chelsea where the team was full of cheap buys and homegrowns...in 92-93 we were second at xmas and in qf of league cup and then in January it all fell apart and he was sacked by march. still will always be a member of the chelsea family and a good bloke

What was you doing there??

Watching Leeds lose, what else? No seriously, I was outside Wembley with a few other Chelsea fans. We used to turn up at Wembley for Cup Finals, just for the crack, you know? I just happened to have a Sunderland scarf round my neck (don't ask), and this bloke comes up to me: "hey man ha you gor a ticket?" he asks. "No man" says I in my best Macam. "There ya go man" says he, and hands me a ticket which just happens to be for the Leeds end. The first half was a bit hairy, but at half time the Old Bill let me through to the Sunderland end, so I was with them when they scored.

Oh but I must. Ask that is. icon_lol.gif

Ok then. Since you ask. There I was, strolling along minding my own business. As you do. And what should I spy with my little eye but a brand new silk Sunderland scarf wot some poor Macam must obviously have lost. And it being a cold day for the time of year, I thought to myself, "I can't let this go to waste. I shall pick it up and wrap it round my neck so i don't catch a cold or anyfing.

There you go, all quite innocent, of course. icon_wink.gif
