Posted June 6, 200816 yr http://www.fansfc.com/frontpage/frontpa ... sid=186086 The £20million tag is obviously nonsense but the 22 year old Saint Etienne striker does remind me of Drogba. Scored two great goals in a friendly vs Ecuador and was preferred to Cisse and Trezeguet by Domenech for the French Euro squad. June 6, 200816 yr Despite a cluster of top European clubs reportedly seeking his signature, St Etienne's exciting young international striker Bafetimbi Gomis is the latest French star to commit his immediate future to Ligue 1 by signing a contract extension. Before leaving for his first taste of competitive senior international action at Euro 2008, Gomis penned a one-year extension with St Etienne that keeps him with Les Verts until 2012. In particular, the 22-year-old, had been strongly linked with a move to Newcastle United in the English Premier League - not surprising, as he is currently at the top of his game after having scored 16 goals in Ligue 1 this term. ASS were keen to keep Gomis for their UEFA Cup campaign in 2008/09, and he was equally keen to remain with the club he joined as a junior in 2001. He told the club's website: "I am very happy to remain at St Etienne and to extend my adventure with my formative club. My next aim is to claim a place in the Champions League with Les Verts. "My priority was always to remain at St Etienne and it was important for me to sort out my personal position before the start of Euro 2008." Coach Laurent Roussey added: "We are all very happy. Bafe is an important element of our team. The fact that he remains with us and that the club directors have done what was necessary, shows that St Etienne have ambition." http://www.frenchleague.com/ligue1/lire ... icle=10351
June 7, 200816 yr If Drogs had given chance to Anelka to feed him properly with passes they could have worked wonders..Drogs was just trying to get his pricetag up by being totally selfish.. This Gomis looks clumsy as Drogs and has that thunderous kick. Too slow for Prem at the moment. Would need at least a year to adjust.
June 7, 200816 yr I hate it when people come up with 'a new XYZ player' tag for a player. Did you know, there's already a 'a new Bale', 'new Pato' and a 'new Balotelli' out there?! As far as Gomis is concerned, would be a good buy, but if he indeed is like Drogba, he wouldn't reach his best form for atleast 2-3 years in England due to the fast tempo of play. And he has himself has mentioned several times that his preferred destination would be Italy.
June 7, 200816 yr certanly looks promising and young enough. Newcastle linked with him...hope his knees are good
June 8, 200816 yr i think he is an exciting lookin player def worth considering plus at 22 he has plenty of time to hone his talents.
June 8, 200816 yr I haven't seen any of these players play, but based solely on what i've heard. I'm much more excited about players like Benzema and that Gomez chap in Germany.
June 8, 200816 yr benzema is a great player but take yourself on to youtube and watch kun aguero!fantastic player and one i think we should be pullin out all the stops to sign
June 8, 200816 yr New Drogba? In footballing sense, maybe....but not in attitude and personality. He signed a contract extension with his formative club after all. If he were Drogba, he'd have taken a home in Newcastle already!
June 14, 200816 yr From what I have seen in the Euro's he is more like the new Carlton Cole. £22m is just mad. If he was available for about £5m then fair enough, but for that amount we want the finished article.
June 14, 200816 yr From what I saw last night, keep the door locked for this Gomis guy for heaven sake He's big but not strong enough to hold the ball, cant time him his run to meet any of the cross, cant pass the ball, best thing he has done all night was that blatant dive to get a freekick..
June 14, 200816 yr gomis looked like a gallic version of heskey. his first touch was appalling. i cant remember a single time the ball went in to him and stuck. wouldnt touch with a sh*tty stick.
June 14, 200816 yr Saw him last night and it's probably a tad harsh to judge him on that performance, but I have to ask, was that first time he has ever seen a ball? He was a appalling.

December 17, 201212 yr You're having a laugh, 27 year old who is an average striker at best - before we bought Drogba he had lead OM to the Uefa Cup Final; he was one of the strongest players you could buy to hold up the ball; his technique was far more developed despite being a late bloomer. Gomis is just another Chamakh, the fact that he has hit a rich vain of form this season doesn't mean anything he is a player who won't be much of an upgrade to Torres. No chance I'd pay anything over 10 million for him. 2009–10 Ligue 37 appearances 10 goals2010–11 Ligue 35 appearances 10 goals2011–12 Ligue 35 appearances 14 goals2012–13 Ligue 14 appearance 10 goals
December 17, 201212 yr To be fair, this is a four year old thread. Back then, Gomis was getting a lot of hype and I do remember him being called the "next Drogba". Obviously, it was an absurd overestimation of his ability and I want nothing to do with him, but a lot of people were wrong about him back then.
December 17, 201212 yr Didn't watch the Lyon game last night, simply because I don't really want him. His record is poor (pretty much 1 in 3 in ligue one over the last 3 years) and atm he's simply on a good run of form. He's not our quality. Heard it straight away on twitter from Canal+ though. CFC and LFC scouts meant to be watching him..

January 12, 201312 yr Apparently still in for him according to GDN France who have quotes from the Lyon chairman. Not really in favor or against this signing as long as the fee is not inflated. Be adequate as a back-up to Ba and if it means no Torres I'm for it. GFNFrance â€@GFN_France #Aulas on #Gomis cont.: 'There are other options for him. The pace of whatever deal will pick up in the last 15 days of the window.' #Aulas on #Gomis: 'There are a number of discussions going on, not just from England. Bafé is interesting Chelsea.' (1/2)
January 12, 201312 yr He hasn't exactly set the French league on fire has he?! Edited January 12, 201312 yr by Bobbywoodhogan
January 12, 201312 yr He'd be a decent signing for a team like QPR, why are we linked with a bunch of average players Remy; Gomis; Taison - Pizarro type signings at best
