Chelsea target Heurelho Gomes to replace Petr Cech

Petr Cech's future as Chelsea's first-choice keeper is in doubt with the club planning to make a move to sign Heurelho Gomes from Tottenham in the summer.

The 26-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Rennes in 2004, only signed a new five-year contract last year but is in the worst form of his career and has conceded seven goals in his last two games.

Chelsea have made signing another keeper one of their main priorities for the close-season after Carlo Cudicini joined Spurs on a free transfer in January, and Standard Sport understands that the Blues are keen on Cudicini's team-mate Gomes, who has impressed in the last few months after overcoming a difficult start to his first season in English football.

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink, who is advising the club on who they should buy even though he has yet to commit his long-term future to Stamford Bridge, rates the Brazil international highly, having signed him in 2004 when in charge at PSV.

Last November, Hiddink said: “Gomes is exceptional and was almost single-handedly responsible for getting PSV to the Champions League semi-finals. He is not afraid and has fantastic reflexes.â€

What a fabrication, just because our interim manager said Gomes is good before he was even close to the Chelsea job, doesn't mean we are going to sign him.

f**king scandalous bullsh*t. This makes me so angry. It also makes me sick how some Chelsea fans are calling for his head after 2 bad games. Cech is a chelsea hero and he still has 10 years in him.

That said I would like us to sign a stronger back up keeper if only to give Petr more competition and keep him fired up for every game because he'd know he's got someone waiting in the wings if he let's his standards drop. Hilario isn't that person and nor is Gomes.

Great rumor, I needed a laugh.

P.S. Plus, Hiddink commented on that,saying it's total b.s., not that it was ever a doubt.

Agree 100% with this. Cech is a great keeper but we do need to sign stronger back-up. Eddie and Hitch are both coaching a Citeh, maybe its worth a punt getting one of them back as extra 'keeper coach.

Port Vale have a good young keeper, Joe Anyon, who Jose was looking at a couple of seaons ago. We'd get him for next to nothing.

so spurs sign cudicini because of worries about gomes, who then has a few games without many errors, and suddenly we are going to sign gomes to replace cech? the man has made at least twice as many errors in 8 months as cech has since he joined us.



this could work to our advantage. hopefully this kind of garbage will fire him up to go out and prove to everyone that he is the best keeper in europe, which he was before that little gypsy sh*t kneed him in the head.

I have a better idea: Sp*ds have this wonderful reserve keeper, Carlo I think his name is... Let's buy him!

The head of their printing department is a di*k-head for sure. He'd have known not a single club on earth will sell the keeper like Cech.

just seen back page of express on sky sports news and they're starting 'cech out' story again...this time robert green being the man to come in

if we'd wanted to, we could have signed Gomez for free when we signed Alex from PSV.

IIRC Gomez was brought to PSV at the same time as Alex. Both were brought in under the arrangement between PSV and us. The specifics of these deals have never been made public (at least as far as I am aware), but they probably go along something like this: Chelsea fund the transfer of promising talent from South America to PSV. We don't know how much we fund, but it could be up to 100% of the transfer. The arrangement suits PSV and us. PSV get good players they might not have been able to afford otherwise. We get first option on potentially top players, who get two years experience playing for a quality club while they qualify for a work permit.

Once they have their work permit Chelsea can decide if they want to pick the player up or sell them on. This is how we got Alex, while we passed on Gomez and Jefferson Farfan. I'm not sure what happened to the transfer fees PSV got for Gomez and Farfan, but I wouldn't be suprised if we got a slice of it or perhaps our share of the transfer gets put towards the next non-eu players signed by PSV.

BTW I rate Gomez. But three years ago he was effectively our player on loan at PSV and we could have had him for free.



Didn't we sign Matej Delac this last summer? I thought he was considered to be the future replacement for Petr? I don't think Delac will be here until 2011, but you would think they can make due until then. What ever happened to Delac? Where is he playing now?

Delac wasn't coming until the end of the transfer ban (which was to be 2011) I think I read somewhere...I don't know if we'll bring him in, in January though.

He is only 16 or something. From what I've seen and heard, he seems like he's a very talented boy.

Oh, and on the rumour...hilarious.

Ya, he turned 17 in August. I have heard rumours that they will be bringing him over in January. I have also heard that he has been playing well.

He's already got a first team squad number, so I guess he's been playing well.

I, for one, am not a fan of replacing Cech with Green. Green isn't nearly as good as him, even on Cech's current form. Hope this stays a rumour.
