Chelsea To Bid £7m For Andy Carroll Of Newcastle United - Report

Chelsea are considering making a surprise move for Newcastle United starlet Andy Carroll, believing a £7 million sum to be enough to capture the promising striker.

According to BBC Sport, the Blues were impressed with the 21-year-old's performances last season for the Toon, where his goal haul helped fire them back into the Premier League and lift the Championship crown.

Carroll bagged 19 goals in 35 games for Chris Hughton's side, and Chelsea are apparently willing to pay a sizeable fee for the England Under-21 international.

With Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba both over 30 years of age, manager Carlo Ancelotti is keen to add young firepower to his squad in a bid to unearth long-term replacements for the duo.

The Italian signed Manchester City striker Daniel Sturridge last summer and is rumoured to be looking at other promising 'homegrown' stars this time around.

Any move for Carroll could be stopped by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who is being extra careful not to upset supporters by selling their most highly-rated player.

Ashley already has a strained relationship with the Magpies supporters, after they blamed him for their team's relegation from the Premier League 12-months previous.

Andy Carroll is actually pretty good, but I wouldn't pay £7m for him. I can see him developing into a player at about Kevin Davies' level, i.e. a mid-to-lower Premiership stalwart who never quite makes it on the big stage or internationally.

Has a terribly unprofessional attitude- thinks he is much better than he really is. Anyone that picks a fight with their captain and senior on a training pitch is not worthy of a Chelsea shirt.

Make no sense to sign a player like that. He's not good enough to cement a spot in the first 11, if we are planning for the future, we already got plenty coming through the ranks

Let's think this through. £6million for an established, good quality premier league player in Benayoun. And £7million for a youngster with a bit of a reputation? Hmm.

Franco di santo could become a far better player if we stick with him.

I would be opposed to signing Carroll. The guy is a walking time bomb ready to explode at any time. He has been arrested on a number of occasions. He is currently on bail awaiting a Crown Court trial. We don't need him.

We have Di Santo and Sturridge. I don't see the point of signing a player who is fitted where he is at and doesn't bring anything new to us.

Can only laugh at this. He's not very good, and he's a horrible little scumbag who fights with his own teammates. Would be a poor signing for anybody, let alone ourselves.

I had seen a bit of him in the season before last and he didnt stand out as an extraordinary sort of player. Maybe he has stepped up in the Championship but you can trust Championship level strikers only so much. Look at what happened to Ebanks Blake.

My only problem with going for someone like him is that it makes no sense spending money on such players when we already have similarly or maybe more talented young strikers in our squad.

Not sure where you get that from, the times i saw him last season in the championship he did ok but no more than that. He certainly didnt look a striker who could play at the level Chelsea are at. Borini on the other hand does look a superb prospect, looks a natural goal scorer to me.

Di Santo is a year or two younger and already has a taste of the premiership, I'd rather give him a run than buy someone like Carroll.

The couple Newcastle fans I know see this as a "laughing all the way to the bank" type transfer. He's a decent player but a horrible person and not even close to Chelsea's standard, or worth £7 million.

The only reason we could possibly sign him is to take the front page of the NOTW away from JT/JT's family an divert attention.

From watching the lad whilst in Newcastle a year ago, he's okay...got a long way to develop as a footballer though (and as a human as well probably).

I think a resurgence of this rumour was inevitable, if not necessarily completely credible.

I wouldn't want Carrol, he's decent but I can't ever see him making it at a top 4 team.
