I can remember rushing back Sunday morning from playing junior football to get in to watch the game on The Big Match with the legend Brian Moore, we weren't on TV much so a 6-0 win was a real treat, a couple of years later history was repeated when we were on TV again against Newcastle winning 4-0. Well I'm up the bridge Saturday so I will take either of those results.

"Sing when your mining, you only sing when your mining". Or was that Barnsley.

After the 84 home game, either Arthur Cox or Keegan said that Wee Pat must have had glue on his boots his dribbling was so good.

Ps the best description of Geordies I've heard is Jocks with the s..t kicked out of them

Look at the state of the pitch. A far cry from the bowling greens they play on nowadays.

Very true. I think that the last time the pitch was in a bad state was when we played Charlton in 2003. The pitch was like a sandpit. Here's a picture from that game. We won 4-1. I remember the Charlton Manager, Curbishley complaining about the state of the pitch.

I was sat about there on my first game at the bridge in 1983 v QPR, I sat watching the shed and the benches, and could hear Gate 13 below, we lost 2-0, it was the season we nearly went down and QPR went up Easter weekend, QPR bought there hordes for a promotion party, a couple of miles down the road and they just about filled one pen of the north terrace, pathetic!

Good article on the official site about a December 1983 midweek game. We beat Swansea 6-1 with Paul Canoville getting a hat trick. The match ball from this game is in the Chelsea museum.

Tuesday 6th December 1983 it was and from memory that winter was a cold and snowy one.

Lads, I'm truly stunned at your powers of memory, be it a game 30 odd years ago or what was the very first (and second and third sometimes!) Chelsea shirt you bought or you were given. I've got a memory like a sieve. I did go to lots of games, home and away, during the 50's up to the 80's, and some events did stick and I believe my first Chelsea shirt was bought from Woolworth's but I wouldn't stake my life on it. And don't ask me where I was standing at a certain game or whether it was snowing or not because I would be clueless!

1979-80 I think this pic the very same season we completely took over their ground. I wouldn't say we took the piss at Loftus Road you turned up and sat or stood where you wanted didn't matter how old you were you knew the ground would be full of Chelsea and you were completely safe from opposition fans. (Who remembers when the Shed used to sing 69 69 )

Remember walking up the steps into the shed upper and looking at the pitch and thinking "what the f**k" Charlton complained bitterly after the game about the pitch, I'm sure no word would of been mentioned if they had won!

Can't remember the last time your memory was this bad !....Im OK remembering things associated with certain games decades ago but useless at remembering scores.

I think a lot of us can recall events 40 years ago but don't know where we left our house keys- I've lost mine so often I've had  my nipples pierced and hang 'em there!

I reckon our pitch was one of the worst in the 70's and 80's. ( Not as bad as the Baseball Ground mind)

Highbury was always known as a good surface, even though if you YouTube certain games from the 70s there in looks pretty s..t by modern standards. Apparently the reason they never put a roof on the Clock End was because it would place a shadow on the pitch and shag the grass up- now they have these lamp systems on wheels running across pitches.

Similarly, In winter a lot of games got used to get frozen off at Upton Park- Stands covered all four sides and the sun couldn't thaw it out.

Going back to the '70's wasn't Arsenals one of the only grounds that had under-soil heating? Can recall every winter loads of games being postponed but Arsenal still played.

The Baseball Ground had to be the worst though. Was like playing over the local rec - mud and sand!!

This is 1980-81 hot day early season. The give away is Tommy Langley in the picture!! V signed the benches when he scored. 1-1 Chivers scored for us

Yes our pitch in 84/85 when we played city in league cup, and pat's famous penalty miss, still not sure if it was a crap penalty or just got stuck in the mud!!!!

Back in the mid-eighties (I forget which season) we were playing West Ham around New Year. I drove to the game and heard on the radio that the game was called off about an hour before kick-off due to a frozen pitch. The same day Arsenal played the Spuds at Highbury. A few days later I spoke to an Arsenal fan who was at their game and he told me that Chelsea and West Ham fans had decided to travel to Highbury and got into the Clock End and started a ruck with the Spurs fans -

What year was the League Cup game at Palace ( early 90's), in the pouring rain when the ball got stuck in the mud in the goalmouth?

We lost, got home and watched the highlights on ITV. For some weird reason Bill Wyman, who was a Palace fan apparently, was the studio pundit.

I was at the game my mate got chucked out of the Shed for an over enthusiastic celebration for what turned out to be a disallowed goal.

93. Really fancied us that night, to use a cliche the football Gods were against us. It's on Youtube but it's poor quality.

I think Frank Sinclair hit a back pass to Hitchy and it didn’t make it then the scorer smashed it in from close range. Should have had enough to beat them that night.
