Agree on the atmosphere, Utd, Leeds and Newcastle were more lively.

Everton were also quiet at the bridge when I was going.

Aparantly Everton took down a good firm for the 84/85 game which was live on telly.

Something to do with payback for when their train got ambushed at Kensington High St last time they came down.

Technically not Chelsea related, but am sure some 'old un's' like myself will recall him. Heard that Bill Gardner ( ICF etc ) in poor health, saw a recent pic of him, he looks 80. Must only be mid 60's if that.

I posted this in the politics thread. Completely corrupt and sleazy club who just when you think they couldn't get any lower it appears they can.

A West Ham mate told me that as a result of recent developments he's gonna stop going to attending games.

Many years ago I played football against a Sunday team that he used to manage over Redhill way.

Newcastle 1 Chelsea 1 1984

Very rare unseen footage, 5,000 Chelsea packed behind the goal.

I remember going to this game, I went on a coach with the Oxford Supporters Branch, I think Speedie scored for us, we stopped off in Ripon for a few beers on the way home and on returning to the coach found that the windows had been bricked in from the back halfway down to the front. F****** freezing on the way home. Great day out though and amazing atmosphere.

I'm told that when we played Sunderland in the Milk Cup in 85, the front window of a coach got put through, and they drove home home down the motorway with the wind billowing down the length of the coach. It was a cold night as well.

Ps my brother and his mates took a minibus up to the Sunderland game, and had to fight there way back after the final whistle. When they eventually made it on they had to pelt their attackers with beer bottles, which means they had nothing to drink coming back. sh*t night all round by the sound of it.

Remember in 1990 i was in Zante  in a bar chatting to a Newcastle fan, who had gone down to the Milk cup semi final at the bridge with Sunderland mates on a coach, he said driving home he said the coach had windows but no glass in them, and the floor of the coach had a patio feel about it with bricks etc everywhere. As a 15 year old lad and walking around the bridge before and after the game and standing in the shed that night, it was an experience i will never forget.

The old Midland Bank, Walham Green branch before it was taken over by HSBC. Did some air cond. work in there.

What's noticeable in every picture taken in London in the 70's is how few cars there are. I found some pictures of my old estate online from the 70's there couldn't have been more than a dozen cars. Very few of my neighbours or mates in school parents had a car all changed in the middle to late 80's.

Anyone know when this was taken? A little bit of the Shed seems to be fenced near the front, most likely for repairs so this might be pre-season?

No one calls that area Walham Green these days ( even though that is technically the area around Fulham Broadway and it's still referred to as that on some maps) I reckon if you mentioned Walham Green to 100 Londoners maybe half a dozen would know where it is.

Did locals ever refer to it as Walham Green I wonder, or was it always just Fulham or Fulham Broadway? I've no idea...

I thought it was strange when I worked there as I thought Fulham Broadway branch would have been more apt. HSBC retained the Walham Green name, when they bought Midland Bank out, as my company kept the mechanical services contract.

We lived just off New Kings Road near the Putney Bridge and certainly called it Walham Green.  Fulham is a strange area having lots of big shopping areas like New King's, Fulham and North End Roads but it's High Street has bugger all.

Cheers for that. For anyone interested in local history I read a book a while back by Harold Clunn called the Face of London which was printed in the mid 60s.

He reckoned that the part of Fulham bounded by North End Rd, Lillee Rd, Munster Rd, Greyhound Rd and Star Road was as mean as anywhere to be found in the East End.

Yet when I've spoken to fellas from that End who were around then, they reckoned that Sands End was rougher.

Gates are open at the front, so after Hillsboro. I think it’s one of Carshalton’s personal photos so he will know, but guessing maybe Derby or Oldham at home early 90s
