October 17, 20241 yr Not much height, but a lot of fight. The mid 90's team doesn't get much pub. 1994 You know who they are.

The amount of sand on our pitch back in the early 80’s was staggering. Highbury was generally considered the best surface, and the Baseball Ground the worst. Think in terms of spectrum we were somewhere down the bottom however don’t recall many games getting cancelled due to unplayable pitch. I’m sure we all watch Big Match Revisited. You look at some of those mud heeps and can’t help thinking, modern football with immaculate surfaces is an entirely different game

October 20, 20241 yr Too young to remember original skinheads. Always been fascinated with its origins. My mate Martin King RIP wrote about it at length
October 20, 20241 yr Bit off topic- played for Chipstead FC in the 80’s- the volunteer grounds man had been pulling his hair out over a plagues of moles that had been running havoc. One Saturday, opposition player trotted out to take a corner, next thing the ground collapses beneath him- sink hole crested by flipping moles. Match abandoned

When you arrived in a location looking for the floodlights was the first thing you did! Coming back from the North, generally popped into a chippy to fortify ourselves for journey back home. Always thought fish and chip shops from the smelly North were better than ours down here

I remember in the 80s we tried bales of straw under plastic sheeting or loads of marquee type structures with heating fans. look at the Arsenal game 84/85 on you tube, looks like farm yard!

The Boxing Day game at QPR in 1982 was at risk of being postponed as there had been a massive dump of snow on the plastic. QPR arranged with the Governor at the Scrubs to borrow some lags to clear the snow. They did, and we won 0-2, Flash Walker and Carthorse Mayes scoring for us.

That’s when the message got painted on the pitch about some blokes innocence

You can see it on You Tube.

Not sure about the heaters but have found highlights of the game. They show how sandy the pitch was. I remember Charlton's manager Alan Curbishley complaining. Can't say I blame him.
October 21, 20241 yr I remember that Charlton match, the ground was shocking. I can't even call it a pitch as that would imply some sort of grass.
