Was roughly 4,000 cos the north terrace held 10,000 at the time and them 2 sections id say both held just over 2,000. The first section by the fenced off section was bigger as was the 4th section was a bit higher. Chelsea had about 7,000 8,000 at elland rd 83/84 and a few less 82/83 cos Chelsea had half the seats 82/83 not all of them like 83/84. Strange thing is Leeds were not huge at home either game with the gate recorded as 19k 82/83 and 20k 83/84 very poor. Chelsea got 25k 82/83 which was about right and 33k 83/84 which was a Bates fiddle. The shed east and west held 34k so with the 4k leeds fans how could the gate be 33k had to be 38k.

. I think the turnstile staff use to keep their foot down on the pedal and pocket the money, one for the club one for them!!

Does anyone remember going back to The Grand Hotel Manchester after the City game 83/84. Ken Bates Thankyou to around two hundred fans who had travelled with the club that season. Five course meal and Ken bates singing and dancing with a Union Jack round his waist!!

Totally agree mate ive said the same myself to older mates, their excuse of "we were only interesting in celebrating" doesnt wash with me, imagine if that was at Elland RD with that amount of Leeds in front of a Chelsea section it'd have gone right off, obviously i'm not digging out our older lot but f**k me thats v one of hated rivals ffs, that couldve gone like the Bham Leeds game did.

Thing is CB that day was the end of the most miserable 5 years in the club's history, and contrary to what some would have you believe many of those who would normally get involved loved the club as much as anybody else. So maybe it's fair to say that if there was one day when it was sound to put off any shenanigans to have a shant and a promotion party that would have been the day, I remember it well mate and the feeling I had that day was up there with Wembley 97 and even Munich last year and to this day is  probably my favourite season since I started going to the match in 1970.

I remember them leaving the West Stand and then coming into both Shed entrances simultaneously, they got kicked straight back out of both though and nowhere near the middle.  That was September 1984, we won 3-0.

That's pretty much how I remember it PB, I was up at the tea bar that day and they came charging up the ramp from the West Stand just after our third goal but didn't even get under the Shed roof before being kicked out again. Didn't know they'd come up the White Wall side as well though.

Chelsea v Middlesbrough 1982/3 staying up staying up.

This is one of the strangest games I can ever remember being at, a truly dire 0-0 with barely a shot taken in anger by either side as we both needed a point to guarantee safety and both sets of fans celebrating as if we'd actually won something.

I too dont remember them coming through the base of the whitewall...On that day i had taken along my spurs workmate...We were standing in the T Bar area...I know everyone sees things in differing perspectives but i remember this...I sawsome agited chelsea up near that entry point....All of a sudden west ham came running in...chelseas initial deal was to run or part off from the spam....Within seconds chelsea had run back at spam and with a few cops had got west ham stopped from any more entry..I know that after the match spam were waiting at walkways to the ground with most chelsea putting their heads down and not wanting the action they were offering..I include me in that too

I was watching a vid on youtube ..The vid was about 2spam who got into the Blackpool end for the final......The cheeky f**kers wanted ag with Pool fans in the drinking area at the back of the seating...They got done but were brave...They were taking hits from all sorts....Had to walk down the steps and out reluctantly. The security were sh*tting it too

Anyone remember the League Cup semi final 2nd leg v Spuds at '3 points lane' in Jan 1972?. That was when many fans were wearing the white butchers coats, with various slogans written on them.

We were 3-2 up from the 1st leg, and filled the Paxton end. In those days they still stood in the Park Lane.

In the lower section of the Shelf, opposite the players tunnel, we had a decent mob next to one of theirs. When the teams came out, it went off big time for a few minutes.

We were 1-2 down and into the last minute or so, then we scored from a corner and everyone went ballistic!. Final score 2-2 and we were Wembley bound (wont talk about that day).

Outside after the game, it was like the 'wild west' for what seemed ages. To many rucks going on all over the place, to be able to focus on any one incident. Got split up from several mates, one who had the misfortune to bump into one of their main 'geezers' at the time, and his mates. he was a black feller named Sammy Skyves (?). This mate in question had a white butchers coat on, daubed with CFC etc on it, and copped a few 'right handers' and some Doc Marten imprints on his coat!

I've still got my ticket somewhere, and the admission price then was around 20p for standing!!!

Yes remember that match well went to both legs.  I was only 12 at the time and stood at the front of the Paxton Road, I went home at 2-1 to them as my dad and uncle made us kids go home when it was 1-1 thinking, we where through saw Martin Peters penalty to make it 2-1 my dad said we have lost our place now lets go home and watch it on telly (ITV midweek sport special) at White Hart Lane station whilst waiting for a train a spurs fan came on the platform saying Chelsea had scored. I remember Martin Chivers scoring just before HT to put them 1-0 and the whistle went and the Park Lane where doing a 'Knees up mother Brown' and it looked good from the Paxton. Oh yes the ticket was 30p

Allrite folks, i've said my hello's in the newbie section. So much to catch up on, I'm gonna try and work through the Vintage section and comment on all the brilliant earlier posts. One picture is already emerging after looking at the first six pages in here, Carshalton, you are a legend, some of your pics and video links bring back some great memories.

Aston Villa 4 Chelsea 2. Weren't we already relegated but still had a massive turnout for this game, i still argue that at least we won the second half 2-1. I was there in the away fans end and there was definately a small Chelsea mob in the Holte that day causing havoc, i think they were escorted out to join us way after the kick off.

There was a National Front meeting in West Bromwich later on the same day and rumours were rife in the Midlands that it would be over run with Chelsea. That never happened but there was a tense atmosphere all day. Me and my mate decided at the end not to go with the escort but to head to Witton Station and make our own way back accross the midlands. There was about 100 Chelsea standing waiting when a huge Villa mob appeared, someone said "dont run" and no one did except The Villa when a few Chelsea started heading towards them. I never got involved in goings on but following Chelsea in those days you got used to it and were glad to have some decent lads around you at times like this.

Aston Villa 2 Chelsea 2 a few years later, me and the missus took my nephews to this, they were already Chelsea by then but have both never looked back. We were late getting in and missed both our goals, again i dont think Villa expected so many of us. We did get a good view of the clash between Tony Daley and Graham Le Saux, Vinny Jones got involved and wouldnt stop staring at Daley waiting for him to get the ball. Vinny was substituted before this happened, clever management but it would have been interesting to see what happened next.

Like i say, i'm concentrating on pages 1-6 for now, one other game Carshalton mentions is Chelsea v Charlton just before the 'Boro play off. I was in The Shed for this one, there was loads going on in the Charlton section, its gotta be the same game as that pic Carshalton. There was one huge Charlton fan wearing a white top or similar, we could see him wading in every time the Chelsea mob went in. The police eventually escorted him out but for some strange reason walked him all around in front of the benches then the shed to a chorus of "you fat bar steward", good job there were about five of them holding him back, he looked well mean.

Just quickly to round off this bit, Snedger, i was at that Walsall game too. I sat on a wall in the Walsall end, i think it was all ticket and living nearby i was one of many Chelsea in their end that day. i arranged to meet my brother in the pub at 6.00 on the same night, he said you will be late if your going to the game, i said nah, i'll leave when we're 5 up ha ha. There was no way Beasant was ever going to let that pen in either, he was furious about the decision.

Sorry if i've gone on a bit folks and also if i've repeated details but this Vintage Chelsea stuff is right down my street. I came accross this site via the excellent The Missing Link, i think theres more talk of that later on in this forum so i'll show my appreciation for that and all you other posters as i come accross your stuff.

all the best for now from the sweltering midlands.

Hello mate and welcome to the old git bit. The Villa game where we were already relegated was in 79 and we lost 2-1 at the end of a pretty miserable season all round.

That's right. The 4-2 game, when Jonny B scored both goals, was in '84, the first season back in Div 1 after relegation in '79. We did have a big turnout that day, but didn't play too well.

Not seen that kung fu picture in years, quite some match on and off the field.

Not sure what the official attendance was? but was another underestimated crowd literally like sardines on the terraces.

Had to seek medical attention due to neck injury craning my neck to watch the goings on.
