Big team, well supported, loyal.  My arse.

Agreed. They like to spout that they have always had 'full houses', but i recall when they were in the old Div2 for a couple of years in the early 90's, their home crowds were around 20,000.

I remember when Ardiles was the Manager, and they played at Southend (3 miles from where i live). I wandered down for a change, and they had less than 200 fans there. And Southend beat them 4-0!!!

  • Agreed I can remember going up there a few times in the 80's and early 90's and the crowd was around 20,000.

I was at one game against us in the 80's and there was about 18,000 and we had about 3,000.

They're still a big club.  They pull in 50,000 when they haven't won a major trophy since 1969.....a domestic one since the mid-50's.  Handpicking some crap attendance from the 80's and early 90's doesn't mean too much in my opinion.  Attendances in English football were down in general in this era.  You could say the same about Chelsea.

But we always know that we struggle with our attendance in the 80's and early 90's and we never denied it but I hear so many georges go on how they use to sell out every games in the 80's & 90's which is not true and i have been there when there when they had loads of empty spaces.

But we still had one of the best away support in the country .

who remembers shuffling down this alleyway at rotherham after we had lost 1-0,we were abysmal, even we were singing we are sh*t,oh the joys of following chels in the early eightiespost-10663-0-30011700-1372447602_thumb.jpg

I went to Rotherham v Mansfield in the early 00s on a friday night game, met some Mansfield lads so went in their end, game was live on sky & ended up 3.2 to Mansfield, after the game in that ally way, i could sense it was going to go so said hang back & bide your time once the first lot of normal Mansfield fans went through we followed & clashed with the waiting Rotherham firm, nothing major but a few mins of fisticuffs with ob on horseback charging in, the Mansfield we'd met couldnt praise us up enough & i ended up meeting them a few months later at an England game.

Chelsea on a fv tour lol!

Only once have i been to newcastle...I remember chelsea train having to go to a small stn and having a long walk uphill through town with kilted geordies walking by the side of chelsea....I remember the university somewhere near the ground where i heard a chelsea boy got stabbed....I remember being in the old away end and chelsea taking over geordie seats to the left of our end holding up a union jack with chelsea written across the middle...

New to site, just been through posts from the start with some memorable recollections from my youth! Some great footage posted by Eddie Mac Blue And White Army. Having trouble seeing stuff on my IPhone saying private video. Any ideas?

Never been to Newcastle but your description reminds me of Liverpool away during the mid 80s. Edge hill station, long walk or buses taking us in. scuffles breaking out as you get closer, my mate got his leg slashed as we just walked along the road bloody nightmare at the time, funny beer talk now. First time I met Rangers fans in with us and we sang you never walk along after the match, hence to say it didn't go down very well!  Always enjoyed away games proper fans and proper days out.
