September 27, 201312 yr lol the press did love "an overturned car" to embelish their reports of aggro. I never saw one all through the 80s and 90s. Think it may have been more of a 70s thing though, when wrecking and smashing things up were not so frowned upon

September 28, 201312 yr Great post Carshalton, some great memories. I've said before 83/84 still my favourite season. Winning the league and our support was superb!
September 28, 201312 yr Reading Bill Garners name reminds me that he lives here near me in westcliff or used to..Anyone expand ? Mike, as no doubt you recall, we signed Bill Garner from Southend for £100k in 1972. He continued to live locally, and when he retired he had a Sports Trophy shop in nearby Rochford. Until several years ago he used to organize and run 'Soccer schools' locally for youngsters during school holidays, in the Southend area (my sons went to a couple around 1993). At half time at the Chelsea v Southend FA cup game in Jan 2009, he was introduced on the pitch at half time, as a player who had played for both clubs. I last saw him about 3 years ago, still in good shape, no hair loss but now grey. Personally i felt he never reached his potential, as he suffered from a lot of injuries whilst at CFC, and had a lot of pressure on him as Dave Sexton signed him to become Ossie's eventual successor. A hard task to follow or what!. I saw him a few times whilst he was at Southend and he was a powerful striker, very good in the air. Southend played CFC in the League Cup in 1972, and although we won 1-0, Bill caused plenty of problems that night to Webby etc. Possibly that display convinced Dave Sexton to sign him.

September 30, 201312 yr Something a bit different, a tube map from 1927 showing fb as Walham Green And Gillespie Road instead of Arsenal.....and how the fk do you get to WHL? And on a north London theme I wonder why they got rid of York Road given how far Cally Road station is from Kings Cross?
September 30, 201312 yr Melbourne, you werent on the battersea coach for walsall was you? I was on it and a good few of them were in there! No, went up on service train. My memory is shocking but I'm sure someone from a north west London suburb who used to run coaches was in there too.
September 30, 201312 yr [quote name="Carshalton Blue" I bet they didn't say back then due to technical difficulties please leave the ground and walk to Earls Court!!!
September 30, 201312 yr Remember Liverpool 84/85 early kick off because of Grand National. Went by coach from Stamford Arms at 11:00pm Friday night. Back seat full of booze!! Arrived in car park near Anfield about 5:30 am there use to be goals cemented in ground. We bought a football and had one of the biggest games I've ever been in!! With others that had arrived it was about 40 aside. Dread to think what modern formation we had, 10 5 15 10!!! Amazed how we ran round with the overnight drink swilling around. Can't remember the score, but more than 4-3 from the main event. Great days.

October 1, 201312 yr I was talking to Damien Matthew who is now a coach at Charlton. We were chatting about the old days.I through a few names at him like Perry, Stokley Sawyers, robin Beste, they came through same time as Dublin, jones, Jasper,Howard and the guy slashed at Millwall. The first three names he thought just drifted out the game. If Robin Beste went to William Penn I use to play alongside him for a good few years.
