Eggy McMuffin Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 He's far too good for them, but there don't seem to be any other sides interested.
Zeta Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Strange that no-one else wants him. Maybe his wages are putting people off.
CFCCAN Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Good defender on a bargain basement price....just hope it doesn't come back and bite us when we play them in the cup..I would be gutted then....perhaps the negotiations could take long enough so that he signs after the game?
Andreas Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 QPR the only club interested will always be a questionmark.. why are other clubs not going for him?
Zeta Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I've never rated him as highly as others on here seem to, but I would have thought someone better than QPR would be interested, especially at a cut price.
dkw Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 QPR the only club interested will always be a questionmark.. why are other clubs not going for him? He has been injured quite a lot lately so I presume most other clubs just arent willing to take the risk. I heard a few clubs wanted him on loan with a view to buy but the club have said they want a fee for him now.
Spiller86 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 If this is true it shows you the morons who are running transfer policy at this club. Alex is still the second best out and out defender we have here. He is little injury prone but a great player. Why we would sell him to a rival for f**k all, is beyond me. This is a bad deal for all concerned I'd prefer we kept him for 6 months and sold him to someone decent rather than do this. Alex is capable of still being a top class defender at a top class club.
Zeta Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 (edited) Don't know about that. Alex has always had weaknesses. He's pretty slow and can be clumsy on the ball. He's reasonably solid and could certainly do a job in a top 4-6 club. But if we had Terry Luiz Cahill and Alex here, he'd be 4th choice for me. Edited January 14, 2012 by BlueSkies
Spiller86 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Rubbish. No further examples are needed than Luiz's clusterf**k of a first half against Man United last season. When he was hooked at halftime Alex came on and gave a champion performance including a block on the line to stop it from being a debacle. It was for good reason that he was regularly picked ahead of Lord Percy during his final two seasons here. Alex is a great player and if I had my way he wouldn't be leaving at all, let alone being sold to a pissant club for a pittance
Eggy McMuffin Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 So when a player hands in a transfer request, you'd force them to stay against their will?
Davey Baby Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Disagree Spiller. Alex wasn't good enough IMO, and this is being borne out by his lack of suitors. He is good enough for QPR of course, but Chelsea is above his level, IMO. He is uncomfortable on the ball, very sloppy with his passing, he is totally immobile and he is slow. He also has poor concentration. In short, he is not a defender you can rely on, he is always prone to make a ricket and be exposed. Luiz is prone to the odd ricket himself of course, but he has all the attributes to make a world class defender, unlike Alex. What Alex has going for him are power, strength, aerial ability. His tackling often gets him out of scrapes, scrapes that he has brought upon himself. He can also shoot of course. He is the perfect mid-table package. He has never struck me as being good enough for Chelsea. I have said from the outset he is our 4th choice central defender. That's fine if he wants to stay but he doesn't. We've replaced him with a superior player, good on the ball, good in the air, fast and mobile. He may not be the world's best but he is able. He is also English and a few years younger. Alex has also had his trouble with injuries. Cahill wants to be here Alex doesn't. That's the bottom line. Unlike Alex, Cahill will get significant game-time, meaning you will be seeing less of Bossy, as there will be less need to play Ivanovic at centre-half. If we get £4m for Alex, that means we've upgraded for a relatively small fee, even taking wages into account, as I assume Alex is on less than 80k a week. What I like about AVB is that he trusts his judgement, just as he did with Benayoun, and he doesn't mind selling to rivals. That shows confidence in himself, ala Mourinho. AVB has got almost every judgement call right. Mikel, Malouda, Kalou are now strictly reserves. Bosingwa too. Alex and Anelka were rightly cast aside. He has brought in Romeu and Mata and they have been great. He has also promoted Sturridge. I think it's time to start showing him some faith. If we're selling to QPR we know what we're doing. AVB has had a look and deemed him surplus to requirements. Thats good enough for me. One thing AVB can do is judge a player.
Andreas Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Dan Levene @BluesChronicle 23s More on Alex situation: QPR's claims that a fee has been agreed with Chelsea are understood to be wide of the mark. Still on the market
Gem Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Good because he's worth more than £3m, even if he wants to go, is 30 odd and is (supposedly?) injury prone. I'd want at least double.
Cam Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Rumour has it, one of his free-kicks killed seven players, as it ricocheted from player to player.
TheWestwayWonder Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Good because he's worth more than £3m, even if he wants to go, is 30 odd and is (supposedly?) injury prone. I'd want at least double. Agreed. I think he would be perfect for the Bundesliga, and one of those clubs could easily afford the kind of fee. Why the hell does Alex want to go to QPR anyway?
dkw Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Seems Chelsea are denying agreeing a fee, and are saying he is still on the market. Also rumours Alex wants to leave England and wouldn`t join QPR anyway. Good lad.
Zeta Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Agreed. I think he would be perfect for the Bundesliga, and one of those clubs could easily afford the kind of fee. Why the hell does Alex want to go to QPR anyway? No-one's said he does. Merely that the clubs have been in contact, nothing from Alex himself. He was "quoted" a while ago as saying he'd like to play in Italy though, when the Juventus links were around.
General Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 looks like its a done deal in the press reports even AVB seemed to confirm it in post match, know he is going to leave but why oh why to that lot.......? reminds me of another CB Robert Huth who Boro paid I think 5 mill squid for a few years back, Alex is a better player so why settle for less dosh ...silly bit of business once again from the board
TheWestwayWonder Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 No-one's said he does. Merely that the clubs have been in contact, nothing from Alex himself. He was "quoted" a while ago as saying he'd like to play in Italy though, when the Juventus links were around. Ahh, well, you can never trust what you hear I guess. Someone pointed out elsewhere that he wants to remain in London and not displace his family. If that were true, then Fulham and QPR would really be the only smart options for letting him leave. Which might put a different spin on things, because selling him to Spurs or Arsenal would be far crazier. Still, it would be lovely if he could just be sold to PSG for 25m and just take the train/ferry back and forth at the weekend. Alex, if you're reading this, give it a think. Also, I dont think having Alex is going to keep QPR up this year.
Spiller86 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 (edited) So when a player hands in a transfer request, you'd force them to stay against their will? No I'm not saying that I'm saying he should have been plying from the start of the season because he is still the second best defender at the club and has a magnificent understanding with JT, which as I say ad nauseum is the most important thing with centre halves. The understanding and the partnership. JT had it with Desailly, Gallas, Riccy and Alex. Does he have it with Luiz? Disagree Spiller. AVB has had a look and deemed him surplus to requirements. Thats good enough for me. One thing AVB can do is judge a player. I really don't where to start on this Davey other than to say after today do you think he is fourth choice? Easily the most underrated player at the club. Almost always a 7 in the ratings because he is solid as f**k. A little slow certainly, perhaps not great on the ball. But dependable? Tick. Consistent? Tick, and I'm really not sure where you're getting this low concentration from. Luiz isn't half the defender Alex is, certainly not yet anyway. Something that was demonstrated in spades today. I'll agree that in regard to transfer policy, in the main AVB has done well. But as far as I'm concerned Alex is the first player at the club being sacrificed on the altar of style. He can't play in this 'style' that is being forced on the squad by AVB so he has been shut out and is leaving. This will in the long run look a bad decision, like many of the other decisions that are made in the cause of style over getting results by using the squad you have in an organic way. Eggy McMuffin Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I was going to write something quite longwinded and had even started but I can sum it up quite simply. I disagree and think you massively overrate Alex and underrate Luiz somewhat, too.
Phillip Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Yeah, I think people think about Alex's 35 yard piledriver goals from free kicks, and forget about his defensive shortcomings. He was and is a capable defender, but not as good in the air as he should be, and a bit too slow to play in a useful partnership with JT.
