John Ruddy

I guess thats what we have to pay for a half decent English goal keeper. If he does a decent job and is happy with a part time role with the club then 10 million isnt that bad.

Pfffft, for a 'keeper who was injured for large parts of last season he certainly isn't worth anywhere near £10m.

I assume we want him to make up our contingent of Homegrown players and a back up keeper is an easy cop out on getting an additional player on the books who qualifies.

Considering Mignolet, who was one of the more inform 'keepers went for £9m I don't think Ruddy is worth £10m.

£5m at most for a bench warmer otherwise it seems a waste of money to me.

Its not about what he is worth, its about how much Norwich are willing to hold out for. They have no need to sell him. He has a contract there so they can hold out all they like. If we really do want him then we will have to pay for it.

Very true, I just don't think we should value a back up keeper at £10m.

I would assume Courtois will be returning to the club next season so dropping a huge amount of money on what I presume is a stop gap seems nonsensical to me.

But Ruddy will still count as a homegrown player for us. Also we dont know whats going on with Courtois just yet. Next season he could go on loan to a premier league team.

Also the 10 million is just what the press have made up. It could end up being more but it could also end up being a lot less. I think it depends on Ruddy. If he wants to take a step up in terms of teams and maybe play in the Champions league but also know he will always be the number 2 at best then im sure he will make his feelings known to Norwich.

Are we willing to spend a reported £10 mill for a keeper who next season will be third choice?Or does it means adieu/adios to Courtois which it means he will end up at RM or Barca,or just sign Ruddy for a season only .If he has any savvy he will stay at Norwich.IF we wanted genuine competition for the keeper position we should have kept Courtois.

If we can get Ruddy £10m will be well worth it.

You're not going to get a better number 2 next season, and he's homegrown to boot.

He knows he never has a chance of being our number 1, especially with Courtois in the background.

We'd be very lucky if he said yes and anyone that complained at the price would be mad.

Back-up keeper is a real problem position, and if Cech gets injured for any amount of time we are f**ked.

Davey Baby gives this one the thumbs up.

10 million? Jesus christ. No, just no. That's far too much to pay for a single homegrown spot.

The past is not a predictor for the future, but considering how little Turnbull was used this is a spot that can be filled by someone of less quality than Ruddy.

If, god forbid, Cech gets a long term injury, a cheaper but still capable can fill in, and then we can bring Courtois back in January. Can we not just recall him outside the transfer windows if we own his rights and have sent him on loan?

I believe will could recall him at any time, as long as it is in his loan term agreement.

Same, i don't really care about the price, it's not my money to worry about. Before his injury last season John Ruddy was getting an England call up and was performing very well for Norwich, in my opinion he would be a perfect back up. It may not be the best move for his career, as he won't be getting many games, but i won't be complaining if we do get him.

I care about how the club I love is run. In the light of Financial Fair Play it's an important factor in the future success of the club and that is why I worry about someone else's money.

This.

I hate that, no matter what, the "its not my money" argument never fails to pop up in these threads that mention silly fees.

The club obviously know what they're doing with FFP better than we do so I don't know why people on here worry about it so much.

Given Cech's history with injuries our backup goalkeeper will probably play a fair few games, so it's important we have an experienced and quality back-up.

Leeds thought they knew what they were doing, Portsmouth, Rangers etc... The point is, it's something to consider when talking about transfers, especially in the detail we all talk about them in. We discuss who would be a better signing out of Matic or De Rossi, does it affect the club's decision? Of course not. Does that mean we should close the Rumours forum down and just accept what the club does? Again no. Discussing how a transfer affects the team and club implicitly includes how it affects the club's future and finance come into that.

In terms of transfers of the big clubs in todays market 10 million isnt a lot of money. Not only that we would be able to sell him again if we needed to. Although i think he isnt really worth 10 million, its not about what the player is worth its about what Norwich need to be happy to sell.

If Cech were to get injured then a decent back up keeper is a must. How many times over the last couple of years have we all moaned and thought our season would take a serious dent when Cech has been out for a few weeks and Turnbull has been put in to the starting 11. Having a back up like Ruddy wouldnt be the same as having another Cech but it would be a whole lot better than having someone like Turnbull between the sticks.

Mignolet wasn't British and his contract was going into his last year, Ruddy has a few years on his contract so Norwich aren't in a need to sell.

But why should it make any difference that Ruddy is English to his transfer fee?

I understand the "homegrown" rule but inflated prices for English players is exactly why most clubs buy foreign players over English.

But why should it make any difference that Ruddy is English to his transfer fee?

The simple fact is it does make a difference, regardless of whether you agree with it or not.

If you don't fill your homegrown quota you're going to have a smaller squad. Those are the rules.

Ruddy at £10m represents real value and we'd be lucky if he agreed to the move, because he's never going to be first choice and he knows it.

Why real value? He's homegrown, he knows what the Prem's all about, and for a number 2, he's very good.

Now, Cech gets injured just before a key CL tie, or a crunch Premiership game, and that £10m will suddenly seem money well spent, believe me.

If we were signing a back-up defender (Gary Cahill say) nobody would blink if we spent £10m, even if he only had 6 months left on his contract.

Now, you may say, "Sure, but a back-up defender will play a lot more".

For me, that would hardly be the point. A back-up is an insurance policy and you never know when it might be needed. We spend £10m on Ruddy and our squad becomes significantly stronger, and a potential pitfall has just been averted, one that could ruin our season.

Besides, Ruddy could play a lot more often than we think, depending on circumstances. You just don't know.

Rather than moaning about the money we should be praying this one goes ahead, after all, we're not going to get a back-up keeper for nothing, so even if we don't get Ruddy, it's not as if we'll be saving ourselves a fortune.

Can't understand the arguments being put forward here. He provides strength in depth where we most need it. The price is not outlandish at all. Don't forget, we need homegrowns and they're not going to come cheap.

This would be a very shrewd buy IMO.

My concern is, you drop £10m on a new 'keeper this season and next year you have Courtois presumably returning to the club after a 3 year loan stint at Athletico.

Suddenly we have Cech, Courtois and Ruddy who it could be argued are all good enough to be #1.

If Ruddy has been here for 12 months already he will already have established himself to some extent (short of being a complete failure which I don't think he would be) so where does that leave us with Courtois?

Will he be sold because we can't accommodate him or will Cech be sold to allow Courtois to become our #1.

It's an odd situation we find ourselves in with our goalkeepers.
