UEFA Europa League

Generally speaking there are three UEFA Europa League places given to English clubs who fulfil the following criteria: winning the FA Cup, winning the Capital One Cup and finishing fifth in the Barclays Premier League.

However, if the Capital One Cup winners finish in the top four, their UEFA Europa League place goes to the next-highest ranked team in the Barclays Premier League (nominally the sixth-placed team).

If the FA Cup winners finish in the top four, their UEFA Europa League place goes to the runners-up. However, if the FA Cup winners finish outside the top four, their UEFA Europa League place goes to the next-highest ranked team in the Barclays Premier League (nominally the seventh-placed team).

been a while huh!

Ah fair enough, seems abit harsh really don't you think?

Probably been done to keep average sides out of the competition. They really should scrap CL teams dropping into the EL aswell however that would most likely harm how much they make off the competition though.

spurs might argue with you....carrick??...blue ...

utd secret agent? :P

2 places are open to league places, 3 if Arsenal win FA cup.

Nope FA cup runners up get the spot.

On the right here, Stoke got an EL spot runners up in 2011

Last season Hull got a spot, runners up against the Gooners

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013–14_Premier_League

So unless the rules have changed Villa are in the EL next season

Rule change for 14/15 season. no European places for runners up if winners of cup already in Europe.

Seriously read this, bloody daft reporting from Sky. They don't realise that teams like Spurs don't actually want ant EL football as it hinders their chances of finishing in the top four.

they need the money and wont get top 4 unless kane scores a billion next season, to be real with you n that..

but still yeah sky are boobs

Daniel Levy doesn't want European football? Don't think I agree with that.

meh.

uniteds new policy: buy all the things and hold onto our balls!

...and then brush all the ridiculously expensive over paid flops under the carpet!

Love that!  :laugh2:

I'm sure Di Maria will come good next season, hopefully this means Mata coming in the middle for us. Would love for our attacking 4 to be like this next season:

Rooney

Depay      Mata    Di Maria

Lack of Europa League will enable Spurs to concentrate on a top four place, their fans certainly don't want it.

Just a quick look at this article –A  good friend of mine who’s a spuds fans desperately wants spuds to finish no higher than 7th. He does not under any circumstances want Europa league. It seem’s most of the comments in the article agree. It’s a sad state of affairs. When I was younger I could only dream of Chelsea in Europe and when we got in the cup winners cup that first time under Glenda the whole journey was amazing, including going out to Zaragoza. Then to win it, what 3 years later was one of the best nights of my Chelsea supporting life. But as the CL grew more dominate and started to include more teams these lesser competition completely lost their meaning. Now it’s seen as a hinderance and something to avoide… sad

EL hardly earns you any decent money unless you win the thing and even then it's still less than you get for getting to the group phase in the CL.

The only way Liverpool have any hope of becoming a title challenger again at some point in the next decade is if they strike it lucky twice and find another Suarez caliber player who still has a low enough profile and price tag that he'd actually want to sign for them.

And then they have to hope that us/United/City/Arsenal/Barca/Real/Atletico/Bayern/Juve/PSG aren't remotely interested in them.

And then they have to hope that their would-be rivals suffer unlikely implosions such as us buying another Torres and United hiring another Moyes.

And then, even in the unlikely to impossible chance of all these circumstances coming together AGAIN, they have to hope some overrated twat doesn't spoil it all by miscontrolling a ball, slipping over and costing them their one chance before all their good players get sold to bigger clubs.

Best of luck to them then.

I agree.

I mean European football is great and all but considering the money it get's you is piss poor and it has a big effect on your league performances and schedule it's really not worth it if you are serious about making the top 4.

If the powers at be actually rewarded clubs fairly for making Europe it would be different but in it's current format the EL is just a distraction to English clubs pushing for CL places.

I believe that's already been addressed by awarding the Europa League winner with a Champions League spot.. In my opinon teams such as Spuds, Liverpool and Everton that are perennial also-rans to the top 4 race need to start taking that competition more seriously, because really you can get into the semi-finals without having played a half-decent team.

I love how the media are now trying to make Chelsea - United the next big rivalry and suggesting LVG has now got the ability to go toe to toe with Jose.

He's not won a game against us and United aint won against us in a few seasons now.

They have been nowhere near us all season long and 1 game where they have more of the ball while still losing and they come out with this....

They are just desperate for someone to displace us, I feed off their hatred for the Chels.
