Joey Barton

Did anyone see the Times article about him at the weekend (behind a firewall so I can't link, sorry)

For a pillock, I've always thought (though took a long time to admit it) that he often does speak quite a lot of sense.  He is taking a degree in philosophy just to try to encourage himself to think in different ways and says that he finds football very insular and unwilling to learn from other sports.  He has attended talks by other sportsmen to learn how they approach things and used British cycling team as an example of a sport who learned from other sports and completely overhauled their approach with of course brilliant results.

As another example he cited the custom of training taking place every day from 1000 till 3.00 where most games are played at 3 o'clock (ok I know that's not so true for Chelsea!) and he says it's illogical to get the body used to exercise in the morning and then suddenly ask it to perform at just the time it's normally resting.  Al because, he says, that everyone has always done it that way.

As I say, for a pillock he comes across as quite intelligent.

I don't mind the bloke at all, I like a lot of his comments on twitter I even followed him.

You can't fault someone for trying to change no matter how bad they are or were, I don't think he is even that stupid either, not as stupid as he has made himself look anyway. I saw him on question time and he made an absolute stupid comment and got ridiculed for it but he immediately owned up too it as a stupid mistake and that pretty much dragged on him the whole night, but after all that's politics for you, it's mostly about the image than what you actually represent.

He seems more like a mate than a celebrity, he doesn't act professional but he doesn't act like he is above everyone else either so I do enjoy some of the things he comes out with, definitely isn't afraid to speak his mind, look at his comments on Palestine 2 months ago, I don't really know anyone else who would say those things, dangerous if anything but at least he isn't afraid to say it.

I'd forgotten about question time!  That was excruciating!  What did he say about Palestine?

I'm going to be honest with you, I'm not that educated on the whole situation, so I let it as bleak as I possibly could.

But since I'm more of an athiest than anything it's probably why I liked his comments that he said the whole thing is ridiculous why people should die on a book of fiction that was years ago. I'm very strong on the beliefs of humanity going forward without religion, maybe it holds humanity together I'm not sure but I agreed with the concept of how it is being used as control and seems to be the catalyst of a lot of problems as is many things of course.

Yossi Benayoun wasn't happy with Bartons original comment for obvious reasons, but I don't think Barton was being ignorant at all, although I do believe there is more to it than what he is saying, which is why I haven't had my full opinion on the matter.

I'm not sure if he really is smart or if he's just an idiot who has decided to imitate (badly) a smart person. My money's on the latter.

I saw him on Question Time, imho I think he has a form of intelligence, but lacks the type of education (schooling in both senses of the word) that would temper his opinions / responses. He may well be clever, but not so clever as to realise what to say, when, how. Sherlock Holmes is all logic, Watson has, as his foil, emotion Joey Barton hasn't yet mastered balancing the two sides of intelligence in real life. If he doesn't mature and learn then as Bluegraham states, Barton's a phallic cranium.

I quite like him, one of the more interesting characters of modern football.

I don't always agree with his opinions but at least he is brave enough to voice them.

I think he would make a decent pundit when he hangs his boots up because he doesn't seem to have any loyalties to teams or players.

I would say he's a thick person's idea of what a smart person sounds like, but I think even thick people can see he's just an idiot.

Apparently he's still a professional footballer as well. Who knew?

He copies and pastes quotes from philosophers and people say he is intelligent. Erm...no...I think it's Plato who deserves the credit rather than Joey for managing to use copy and paste.

I don't mind the guy to be honest. Isn't a good enough footballer to worry us on the pitch, but certainly a more interesting character than say a Michael Owen or a Phil Neville. Does strike me as a bit of a David Brent at times with his Google searching of philosophical quotes.

Exactly, he is an idiot, and worse than that he is an idiot who thinks everyone needs to hear what he has to say, no everything.

Read that over the weekend also, I thought the same, he is quite annoying ....but genuinely seems interested in educating himself, however pretentious he may sound at times. He's a bit like Noel Gallagher in the blunt way that he talks.

He was actually at a sports summit that was held at the Bridge a couple of weeks ago. General consensus was he's a pillock, but he's self-aware enough to know that he's too sh*t of a footballer to be of note after his career ends so he'll just try and attract as much attention as possible.

He's like Clarke Carlisle without the issue of race to lean on.

Clarke Carlisle is mixed race, depressed and good at Countdown. Seemingly perfect for media soundbytes. I have no idea whether or not he was a decent player.
