John Stones

Featured Replies

He's not far off defensively. Stones is by no means the finished product, but I don't think Aguero will skin Stones like he did Cahill on sunday, for example. Also, Stones is better than Zouma. Zouma's class, like, but for me Stones is the step ahead in his development.

Yeah, but Aguero is just a poor man's Charlie Austin. The young Stones would have dealt with him easily, given how he shut down the mighty Odion Ighalo.

I really dont believe Everton or any other club for that matter would hold us to a greater ransom then they would anyone else. They have their evaluation and they are sticking to it. And if we end up "paying over the odds" for Stones it certainly wont mean the next player we could have bought for 20 mill is bow going to cost 40. Thats just not how business works

You mean like the deal for Baba Rahman? a player that was worth 7 mill before our interest. We had to pay around 14 mill to get his services.I know what you are saying but i am also convinced we pay more than most clubs.

No shame in getting done by one of the best players in the world, Ighalo on the other hand...

Could be stones is the player everton have decided to say "no more, we are not a selling club" on and meant it.

New TV deal and all means they likely do not need the cash so maybe this time not for sale really means not for sale.

Were do you get what he was worth? He was never worth 7 million. Augsburg never wanted to sell one of their most prized assets, but in the end they just couldnt say no to our offer. You think if Watford put 7 mill on the table he would be sold? No way

I see the point you're making but I doubt we have much of a choice. If we want the player, we'll have to pay what the selling club is asking. Our main rivals, United and City have been overpaying for virtually every player they target. We can either improve our team and remain competitive, which means spending big money and paying over the odds, when needed, or we can stay put and turn into Arsenal circa 2005-2015.

Yeah agreed on that, but it's a bloody shame and it won't change any time soon.

I went a bit off topic so sorry about that.

and what about 49million£ City had to pay? Plus another 32 and potential another 40+ We aren't the only ones that have to pay alot.

86 million . . . MILLION pounds for Bale that is batsh*t expensive.

Wait for next year when the tv deal kicks in. Certain we will see the first 100+£ player.

Who decides what a player is "worth" any way? In my line of work, if someone is willing to pay x amount of money for an object then thats the value we assign. Now if that investment turns out to be worhwhile is a whole different discussion. Clubs refusing to sell their players cheap isnt the same as fleecing the bigger clubs.

Not sure why you think giving a club more then fair compensation for their talents is so bloody awful, it would be worse the other way around

Everton fan in peace.

Our board is useless and the weak link in this chain for us ... however I don't believe we will sell in this window.

I don't want us to sell.

Neither do most (not all) Evertonians.

There are some who still believe the lie of "sell to buy" and a few who think he's good but not that good.

Most us have seen Spurs and Liverpool get weaker from selling their best players and don't want to repeat their mistakes.

30m? 40m? 50m? It's a trap. Your money is a trap and hopefully we won't be as stupid as other clubs (and us in the past TBF) have been.

Dumb people (journalists, pundits etc.) think we get 40m and can buy a lot of players and get better. "Only way to progress without investment is to sell. They have to sell." They want us to sell.

So here is a list of players better than Stones we can buy with 40m who will come to EFC:

Thoughts?

Balotelli's and Shaqiris? Players with too many red flags for the real elite teams? Maybe we get some of those types. Do we even want them?

We currently have a few CL level players and a bunch of Europa league players.

All your money does is enable us to buy more Europa league players to sit on our bench. We don't even have Europe this year so a deep bench seems less urgent.

We won't get better by selling you (or anyone) Stones.

We know that.

Martinez knows that.

Your only hope is our horrendous board and/or Stones throwing a fit (although it's probably too late for Stones to agitate a move ... plus he isn't the type).

But make no mistake ... your money is significantly less valuable to us that keeping our core young players together. Stones, Lukaku, McCarthy, Barkley ... keeping them together is our ONLY hope of ever winning anything without investment.

Selling them and using the money won't work because what good is 40m when you're competing with people who have spent hundreds of millions? I think more and more teams are starting to realize that one or two golden eggs are practically useless when other teams own the chickens. We aren't holding out for more money ... the money is a sick joke ... we're holding out because as Martinez has said ... he isn't for sale and your money is no good to us.

Wonder if they still think Stones can join Barca, or Madrid or Bayern next year and will be worth £60m on grand old team.

Just been on there, are they still actually being hypocritical about our players answering questions on Stones.

Oi grand old team mob.... Martinez - Lukaku - Head of comms guy.  Good day

Good day! There are rumours that Barca have been in touch about Stones and told us to wait a year or two. Probably just nonsense rumours. You know nonsense rumours like the idea we are going to sell Stones in this window.

Oh i dont think Stones is sh*t. Far from.  I just think we are already past the price he is worth. Albeit I think we will go to 40

How the f**k can their fans call £30m-35m an insulting bid for John Stones though. That is just sheer mental

It is insulting mate. From our perspective. We have to pay 15% or so to Barnsley, the ludicrous loyalty bonus to Stones, then we likely don't just buy one player to replace him we probably buy at least two (meaning the wages for the new player come out of this pot as well). It leaves us with about 15m to spend on actual transfer fees. 15m for selling the brightest defensive talent England has produced in over a decade? Yeah we aren't too excited by that TBH.

Telegraph now saying that Everton want £40m now for him. Amazing the difference a draw and defeat makes.

Seriously? Okay this is the part that winds us up the most. The draw and defeat have NOTHING to do with it. The papers lie about pretty much everything. They were saying 25m was enough when you bid 20m. Then 30m was what we were "holding out for" when you bid 25m. So now you bid 30m they realize they were wrong twice so they have another guess.

If you insist on listening to useless "journalists" why not listen to this one ...

  1. Chelsea now left to work out the next step in the pursuit of Stones - but Everton simply refusing to come to the negotiating table.

  2.

Everton's stance on John Stones is exactly the same today as it was when Chelsea made their first £20m offer - not for sale.

Because of this we will pay for every player over the odds,if his price is 20 mill we will pay 40 and etc.Every club knows we have money and they will push every players price over the edge.We can afford it but for how long will we pay over the odds?

We don't want you to "pay over the odds" mate. We don't want your money. We want Stones. Not for sale. Especially not after we hammer City 3-0 on Sunday. :)

Not sure why you think giving a club more then fair compensation for their talents is so bloody awful, it would be worse the other way around

No one in their clear mind thinks Stones is worth 40 mill, not even the people at Everton. However they know they will get it so why not get as much as they can.

What about Rooney then?

Stones has class way beyond his years just like the players I mentioned.

He's clearly not another Phil Jones, Jones never looked half as good as Stones has during his time at Everton.

Jose clearly wants him and I can see why.

Sometimes you can just tell when a player is quality, no matter what their age. Stones is this.

Defensively, he honestly is underrated by the pundits/media. I think it's mainly because they think that cos' he's so young, then he can't be defensively sound. But he's brilliant. I wrote a piece last week on it, actually. His rapid development is mainly down to him learning from the mistakes he makes so quickly. If he dives in once and gets beat, the next time he dives in he'll be 100% sure he can win the ball.

Offensive wise, it's clear to see how good he is in possession. The main facet is his composure. When any other of our players are on the ball - and I mean any, not just defenders - and they're under pressure, I worry that we're going to get caught out. But with Stones, he emirates composure. Not just in possession, but also when defending as well. Cahill the other day was flapping all over the place because of Aguero. Jagielka, as good as he is - probably around the same level as Cahill - is guilty of the same sometimes. Stones just doesn't get phased.

West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace: "We have no interest in selling Saido which is what I have told Daniel Levy."

What Kenwright should do ^ but he hasnt

Yes they clearly do. You are getting too caught up in comparing Stones to other players and what they were sold/bought for. Its not that Everton thinks Stones right now is one of the best CBs in the league. They are looking at it from a business standpoint. Would it be good business to sell Stones, ome of their brightest talents for 30 million now knowing he is on a long term deal, knowing they arent strapped for cash, knowing he doesnt want out and knowing they would have to go find a suitable replacement before the window closes. When the answer to all those questions is a resounding NO, you can clearly see why its going to take more then 30 million to pry him away. You think if a club like Roma came tomorrow and bid 32 mill they would get him?

Your only hope is our horrendous board and/or Stones throwing a fit (although it's probably too late for Stones to agitate a move ... plus he isn't the type).

Fernando Torres submitted a transfer request on the evening of transfer deadline day when he moved to Chelsea.

Never underestimate player power when it comes to these things.

Stones has kept quiet for now which puts strength in Everton's stance but were he to submit a transfer request anytime up to the window closing then it would suddenly significantly shift the dynamic of this transfer.

Still a long way to go with this one.

As I've said, not the finished article, but he will be a much better player/defender than Cahill. There's a lot more examples of Stones saving our defence than making a costly error.

40 Million for Stones??? We payed 12 Million for Zouma, And i doubt if stones is better than zouma

At this moment in time, he is. And I think Zouma is a very good player.

West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace: "We have no interest in selling Saido which is what I have told Daniel Levy."

Yep, putting RM in the awkward position of having to do it over and over again.

Because and this is the funny bit, depending what side of the fence you are. If Phil McNulty had tweeted anything to suggest a deal could happen, he'd be getting pelters.  Same as this guy will, or has been

Barcelona wont sign Stones, not due to ability, but he isnt fancy enough sounding.  Remarkable as it sounds. Theyll just trigger some release clause of La Liga's next big thing

He may be more naturally gifted as a player than Cahill, but that doesn't make him a better defender at this particular moment in time. What has he accomplished so far? Cahill won everything there's to play for at the club level both in the UK and Europe in his two-and-a-half seasons at Chelsea and it wasn't down to some luck, he played his part. I know Cahill's limitations, they're well documented but he clearly has got mental toughness that is required to play at the highest level. Remains to be seen if Stones has it in him to deliver on a big stage.

Its one thing defending for a mid table team & a whole other thing defending for a league topping side.

He's a big fish in a middle sized pond at the moment, can he be a big fish in a big pond!!

I'm not even sure £40m will get him in all honesty. And bidding beyond that would be ridiculous.

I think we just don't want to sell him under any circumstances, and we're confident he will retain or increase his value, so there's no imperative to sell. Martinez spoke at the weekend how he doesn't want to follow the Soton model of selling and reinvesting.

Obviously we're not naïve enough to think he'll always stay with us, but I am really starting to think we're just not going to sell in this window.

Get Aymeric Laporte and everyone will be happy.
