John Stones

Whilst I am glad we're not going to spend £40m(!) on him, a Manchester club will no doubt come in next year/year after and get him when his price has dropped. Shame, but if he doesn't want to move (enough to push one through) then credit to Everton for sticking to their guns.

The times reckon he is considering a formal TR. They claim he told martinez last week he wants to come here.

If that's so that'll put cat fur amongst the sticky toffees.

It's all been left a little too late IMO, TBB said initially we've been interested in him for a while, so why didn't we open the bidding the day the window opened? I say all of this of course without having any knowledge of how it all works.

The times may be no more reliable than the mail etc but Oliver kay isn't a known bullsh*tter

I agree with you on Kay, he's usually fairly accurate, but the report says he is 'considering' a request to transfer, hardly a scoop and every chance it is copy filler. There's a sense on here that Everton have no right to hold onto Stones or resist Chelsea's attempts to sign him, but the fact is that he is our player, we bought him from Barnsley and he signed a 5 year contract not too long ago. We could certainly use the money but most blues would rather see us hold onto young talent like Stones/Barkley/Coleman to see if we can build a truly competitive team because it's our only chance of success, any money from Stones will not be fully reinvested and it's unlikely that the team will be improved in the long term. It has nothing to do with teaching Chelsea (or anyone else) a lesson.

Sep 1st deadline, my feeling was something tomorrow lunchtime, but no one knows.

According to Di Marzio, CFC started negotiations with Zenit for the transfer of Ezequiel Garay.

I think Stones deal is dead. One Twitter "insider", who actually proved to be right on several occasions claimed recently that Jose was disappointed that Stones didn't push for transfer, which was what Chelsea were probably hoping for.

Even if he put in a transfer request Everton could still refuse.

As I said in other thread that's a strange plan B target.

He's 29 soon so wont be a long term solution in terms of Terry and it's not like we NEED a CB right now.

Stones made sense because we could bed him in and to learn from JT.

Anything above 25-30 million is ridiculous to be honest. Unbelievebale the premium on young English players. No wonder half the young talents end up lunatics or regressing rapidly after a big move.

I agree with that, it's not an ideal age when we are trying to replace Terry.

When we signed Fabregas, Mourinho said we had talks regarding 4 midfielders.  Having talks with Zenit re.Garay does not signal the end of Stones or any other target for the area... it's keeping your options open. Get an idea how much each costs, weigh up the pros and cons and then go for the most suitable

why are we so scared of playing our academy players? Liverpool just put an 18yr old from Charlton in their first team and he's doing extremely well. If Gomez or stones were at Chelsea they'd probably be playing at Vitesse right now, and loftus cheek is rotting on the bench despite Matic clearly needing a partner. We have one of the best youth academies in the country yet here we are about to spend almost 40million on another youth player.

Davey...first off let me say I do enjoy your posts but I do have a difference of opinion in this case.....

I enjoy yours too mate. Pressed for time right now and just scanning through this thread but I look forward to reading your post.

Nice to know that someone does.

The times is normally THE most reliable source and probably one of the only publications i would place any credence on. That said, its still a newspaper. Nuff said.

Stones is cutting it a bit fine though, why didnt he just hand it in weeks ago? this whole saga just reeks of rooney.

personally i'd like to see us walk away from this. feels like we are being held to ransom and for the money we could do better, and i agree with those who say that we should be finding suitable replacements from within our youth academy, or from one of the 30-odd players we have out on loan. The young lad Gomez who played last night looked every bit a premier league player, i fail to see how sending our youth players out on loans to the obscurity of vitesse will provide any indication as to their suitability for a career in english football.

just feels like a farm as opposed to a clear strategic vision for incorporating youth into our squad from a long term perspective.

we may moan about being bent over a barrel by other clubs when it comes to transfer fees, but we dont do ourselves any favours.

Stones may seek to force move
Oliver Kay

John Stones is weighing up whether to submit a formal transfer request as he looks to persuade Everton to relent over a potential move to Chelsea. The England defender informed Roberto Martnez, the Everton manager, last week that he wishes to join Chelsea if possible, but the Merseyside club have maintained a firm stance that he is not for sale.

Stones is now contemplating whether to go a step further by officially requesting a transfer, even though Martnez has stated publicly that such a move would make no difference. Chelsea have had three bids for Stones rejected since mid-July, the latest of them for £30 million last week. The London club have begun to look at alternatives in case Everton refuse to back down, but a fourth bid is expected regardless of whether Stones officially requests a move. Everton remain vehemently opposed to selling Stones.

Jon Woods, the director, was filmed during the 2-0 defeat by Manchester City on Sunday telling a supporter at Goodison Park that neither he nor Bill Kenwright, the chairman, would sell the player.

That stance was reinforced last night by another figure at Everton, who said that they are "truly determined" to keep Stones. The situation is a difficult one for Stones, for whom a move to Chelsea - with a view to competing for a firstteam place immediately and to forging a long-term central-defensive partnership with Kurt Zouma - holds an obvious appeal.

It has always been Stones's intention not to force the issue, out of respect for Martnez and the club, but that principle is being tested now that Everton seem fiercely committed to blocking the move.

Leighton Baines went through a similar dilemma two seasons ago, amid interest from Manchester United, and ultimately decided not to ask for a transfer. Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool and England defender, said on TalkSPORT last night that Stones should stay at Everton.

"Every player should want to play at the highest level and win trophies, play in the Champions League and play for his country," Carragher said. "That's the aim of every player.

It's just [a question of] what is the right time for the player to go - and I think the right thing for John Stones would be to play for another couple of years at Everton. "He's playing really well, but you have ups and downs as a young player, especially as a defender, where you can make a couple of mistakes, give away a penalty, and your confidence goes. That's part of being a defender and learning your trade.

I think it would be better for him to know he's almost guaranteed to play week in, week out for Everton, go through those times with Everton, and then when he eventually gets his move to a top English club, as he will do, he'll be going there a bit more experienced, a better player, and a bit more mature in his game." If Stones does move, then Barnsley, his former club, will be entitled to a significant cut - believed to be 15 per cent - of any transfer fee under the terms of the deal they agreed when selling him to Everton in January 2013.
Although a fee of £3 million has been widely quoted in the original transfer, Barnsley only received an initial fee of £1.25 million, with additional payments contingent on his success at Goodison Park and any future sale. Tom Cleverley, the Everton midfield player, likened Stones yesterday to Rio Ferdinand, the former Manchester United and England defender.

"He is just a Rolls-Royce at the back really," Cleverley said. "He's so calm and composed and first and foremost he's a great defender. He does all the basics right. He's a very, very talented player. If you had to liken him someone, he's probably like Rio - very quick, calm on the ball and you trust him."
