Last option not really an option. So as tempting as it may be, don't do it!!!

(Feel free to name your own preferred player if not on the list.)

I think we have two options:

1. Sign a good fullback (left is my preference). Move Ivan inside as cover and wait for the right target.

2. Sign a decent 20-25 defender who can play a role this year but is versatile enough to cover more than one spot and play a role in a rotation with with Zouma, Andreas and Cahill next season.

I can't see us getting Koulibaly now. I've been saying van Dijk for some time now. He ticks alot of boxes but I can't see Southampton letting him go now. Kongolo might be a good option 2 signing. Particularly as he is left footed and plays left back.

Leonardo Bonnuci, Mats Hummels or Raphael Varane for me

Edit: well aware how unlikely two of those are, if not three.  It's just my ultimate desire

I would prefer us to sign a full-back to be honest; I think a rotation of Terry, Cahill, Zouma and Ivanovic is fine for the time being considering we have no European commitments.

With the age of three of them a concern this is something we may have to revisit in the future; obviously we'll have Christensen back next season (and Aké possibly) but with Terry and Ivanovic likely to leave in the next season or two it would be quite a big risk to let that much experience evaporate out of the club without bringing in a ready-made replacement. I'd leave it for this season and see where the land lies next summer.

Don't you think it would be better to bring in a 25-30 year old CB this season so they can see how the John Terry's and Brana Ivanovics of the team prepare/lead from the front week in week out.  If they were both to move on at the end of the season and two new centre backs came in, they wouldn't have seen the example set by those two legends.

(In response to Van Butsen)

I certainly wouldn't complain if we managed to get somebody good. My main concern is that none of the top defenders look particularly likely to move and I would rather we didn't sign anyone than compromise on the quality of our signing. I'm not hugely concerned about the transfer fees as it's not my money but it certainly wouldn't be ideal if we got absolutely hosed for a player who isn't really of the quality we're looking for.

Think you're on the right track Plokkers. Ivan can get us through I reckon. Means we can wait for a target rather than buying someone who doesn't fit the bill. Key for me is our next signing has to be able to play on the left side. That is where JT is going to leave a hole. There aren't too many out there who have the right characteristics and tick that box too. Part of the reason we are chasing Koulibaly so hard in my mind. JCS is probably the long term solution but he isn't ready yet. Needs some time in the gym.

This is what im thinking now aswell tbh, if we get a decent left back, it will improve the balance of the defence enough to see us through until next summer.

I'm going for Mustafi, just for a good laugh at Arsenal.

As Spiller said in the immediate short term I think we need a left sided centre back to fill the void left by JT, though he's played on the left for Germany I don't think Mustafi is the solution - as a replacement for Cahill though I'd love us to sign him tbh.

The centre back I would love to sign is Romagnoli, intelligent left sided centre back. He's young and can play left back if needed. If I'm picky a left back would also be nice (Rodriguez or even Bertrand).

A back system of Azpilicueta/Aina/Ivanovic  -  Zouma/Ivanovic/Cahill  -  Terry/Romagnoli  -  New Left Back/Azpi/Aina/Romagnoli

I think that has a lot of potential but also a lot of experience. It would also be beneficial as, apart from Terry (and Clarke-Salter but he's a little young) all, all of our current centre back options are right sided so a left footer coming in would balance the back four nicely in my opinion.

Chelsea offered €35m for Alessio Romangnoli but AC Milan have rejected it. (@SkySport)

Can't see Milan selling what with their Chinese investors and they only signed him last summer. Given JT's situation it was a lack of foresight that we failed to sign him when he was on loan at Sampdoria from Roma.

apparently Liverpool are willing to let Sakho go, if true we should be all over that, he is one of the very few CB's in the PL who i actually rate.

Decent enough CB on his day but having seen some of his social media videos I don't think his ego is what we need. If Klopp doesn't rate him (or has an issue with his mentality) I don't see why we should consider him.

i dont know if Klopp doesnt rate him as a player, i thought its his attitude that he is fed up with.
