Great win. Newcastle had two former European Cup Winners in Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott. They also and Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley in their side, It was watched by 30,628 people. Next up is a short trip to Charlton on Tuesday, 15th November 1983 at 19:45. Was this the year of the famous coach ambush at the Wandsworth Bridge roundabout ?

November 13, 20187 yr This was the match with that famous solo run by Pat Nevin. It was supposed to be on MOTD I think. There was a strike or something and it never got shown. Funny thing is I'm really sure I saw the outside broadcast van and cameras and stuff outside the Bridge. I always wondered if they actually took footage that day. Would love to see that run again.

Curly perm Keegan was full of praise “ that winger must have had glue on the end of his boots” etc etc. We murdered them at home in 81/82 season as well. Think that was the 5-0 game. An Arsenal school mate whose still my best mate today came with us ( in the benches with me old man) and was well impressed.

November 13, 20187 yr Watched this game from the benches. Pats run from the shed end towards the north stand was unbelievable at the time, especially when pitches weren’t conducive to dribbling with a ball. It’s just a shame that nothing happened at the end of the run. The game was fantastic and as Erskblue and others say, it really was a great season!!

The only thing I remember about that night was returnimg to my mates car to find a window put through and a missing stereo. No recollection of the game. Digressing- I know a Chelsea supporter from Charlton, who was telling me about the day in 75 when there was mass disorder from us at the Valley. Some sort of wooden hut got set on fire, which was handy for him- he used to sell Charlton lotttery tickets as a sideline- he owed a few bob on these tickets but all the records went up in smoke! I read Suggs’s biography a while back and he mentions that afternoon. Edited November 15, 20187 yr by Ewell CFC

It always pissed me off that the crowd microphone was in the no mans land by the North Stand and you couldn’t hear the Shed. A mates dad was a scaffolder who worked for LWT. Not quite sure what he did but probably working on camera gantries etc. He’d always let us know what London teams were gonna be on the Big Match. Edit: The first leg of the Milk Cup Semi v Sunderland was televised- the one where Dale Jasper screwed up. Can’t find it on YouTube anywhere. Edited November 15, 20187 yr by Ewell CFC

November 16, 20187 yr Didn’t he only play because Joe McGlauchlin injured himself during the warm up ?
November 16, 20187 yr There wasn't any cameras at the Newcastle game not even local news. The benches gave Terry McDermott terrible stick about being a gippo he reacted to it as well. I was at that Charlton away game John Hollins playing at right back before and I always thought it was weird being replaced later in the season by Colin Lee. Going from the most glamorous position on the pitch centre forward to the least right back.

November 16, 20187 yr 11 hours ago, Peckham Blue said: Didn’t he only play because Joe McGlauchlin injured himself during the warm up ? Joe Mc Laughlin came off after 10 minutes with a shoulder injury. I think Colin Lee came off with a hamstring injury or went up front, so played with 10 men for part of the game. The ground was so hard and shouldn’t have been played.
November 16, 20187 yr Stayed in the roker hotel that night after the sunderland game .it was doom and gloom all round in that place which was a short walk from the ground, even saw a chelsea lad who was that gutted he walked onto the beach and took all his clothes off down to his Y fronts and strode into the sea . it was bastard cold that night, so god knows how cold the sea was,but said lad got out of his rising damp trance and clothed back up and sat back at the bar to finish his pint.

Skinny dipping in the North Sea- nice- I’ve mentioned it before but the lads on that coach that drove 300 miles home with a bricked through windscreen we’re also a trifle chilly that night My younger brother and his mates got a mini bus up there- there’s some game, hefty lads in that group and they had to fight for there lives getting back to the motor, which also got smashed up. For the return my older brother was on duty as a copper that night- Chelsea fan himself so he used to volunteer for Bridge duty a lot and get paid to watch games. Busy night for him that was- not sure whether it was against Sunderland or Wednesday in the previous round- they got a mauling as they came off the coaches parked by Bagleys Lane- a lot of em went back to the coaches and stayed there- listened to the match on the radio, too frightened to venture further. Disappointed to drop points in this one. Dont remember too much about this one
November 19, 20187 yr Author This goal v Palace was John Hollins only goal for us in 35 apparences in that season. It was also his last goal for us. His first goal had been scored back in 1964/65 He never made any appearances for us as a sub ! There's a bit of Chelsea trivia.
