We've got a new Kepa

I think the fact remains that Kepa only has 2 years left on his contract (yes it's been 5 years already! Time flies) and there's no rumours about a new contract for him.

If we thought he was the long term option, he's be kept on. But financially replacing Kepa will be very expensive and probably very difficult based on his current wages.

Either he looks class this year and gets that new contract, or he's pushed out next summer.

I don't think he will look top class, I agree with you that there's serious deficiencies in his game. But he's good enough for us to get top 4.

he will never look top class, everyone already has made up their mind that he isn't

there is a bias against him because of the PTSD we have from that terrible season he had

the truth is that he is a great goalkeeper provided that he has confidence. His mayor weakness is claiming crosses. The fairytale that he is weak from long shots is statistically not true.

Sanchez is in fact bottom 5 in the league as a goalkeeper, while Kepa is top 5

Regardless of ability, he's not attainable. Courtois is better too but we can't get him. Try and actually offer a realistic alternative to Kepa and we can have discussion. Posting random youtube clips of Onana is pointless and honestly a waste of space on this thread.

No i t is not. this was to nullify the false narratives about Onana. This is a goalie we should have gone for.  We spent 70M on Kepa and we are  all here concerned about it . Kepa is the worst Goalie i have seen at Chelsea since Stamford Bridge got renovated . There are many and better alternatives.

I will happily change my mind if I see reason to.

However it's going to take a lot more than being one of the best players in a 12th place Chelsea team (where he still made game changing mistakes) for that to happen, I'm at a genuine loss at why that's considered so unreasonable especially given the high standards his predecessor was held too.

You'll never convince the doubters, some of whose rationales verge on irrational. Has to be Freudian somehow. I must dust him off and have a read.

So it's irrational to hold the worlds most expensive keeper to high standards?

Honestly the Kepa fanboys are becoming as bad as the Torres one's.

what does it matter that we finished 12th? it wasn't his fault

our defensive record was top 6 worthy, and that's considering our defence wasn't that solid

we just didn't score goals

Presumably you didn't see this Onana video then LOL, The one at 1:30 is my personal favourite !

And if he was as good as made out they'd be numerous other things to use as a case of defense than he was one or the best players in such a bad season.

So was Thiago Silva, and it wouldn't even be in the top 100 of things I'd use to defend him to someone who doubts him.

Either way, in context of being a first choice keeper to win leagues or UCL he's got everything to prove, our last three number 1s managed to do atleast one of them, that's the standards.

I'm no fan boy but it wasn't that long ago when keepers reached their prime from 27+.

They still do. It just falls outside the narrative. This guys positioning,  feet, lack of aerial strength and dubious shot stopping from distance has not improved and I cannot see it improving now.

Oh and his ball playing ability is a fallacy as well.

Other than that, he's fine. Lol

I remember at the end of the Fulham game I saw Bergstrom make a lovely through pass that wiped many Fulham players out of the game and found the feet of the attacker on the half way perfectly and my first thought was i genuinely can't remember one pass of that quality from Kepa in five years. He's decent with the lobbed pass to the fullback if they're unmarked but that's about it.

Given how it's becoming such a requirement in the modern game it's utterly crazy how the closest we've had to a good ball playing keeper is 2021 Mendy.

City, Fulham, Spurs, Everton, that's 8 undebatable ones, and ironically the latter started due to poor distribution which is suppose to be his main selling point. 3 of those errors were a lot worse than most of things Mendy was getting criticised for so why shouldn't he be held to the same standards? Infact he should be held to higher standards given his price tag and the fact he doesn't have the body of world class work Edou does.

But like I said despite that he was good scaled for his prior level but he needs to do a lot more to change my view, just like Begovic being good in 15/16 didn't convince me either.

This is all fine so I won't be picky, let's agree that he needs to do even better from now on and specially since he's entering his prime years soon enough.

Name a single better alternative that is currently available. I've asked this several times and no one can seem to give me an answer???

You do realise players can improve over time, right?

Like mentioned before, we had one of the best defensive records in the league last season, regardless of league position.

Why are we judging him on his league form from 3 years ago, not last season?

We aren't in the UCL next season and we aren't winning the league.

  • Maignan
  • Costa
  • Kobel

Maignan - £70m+ not gonna happen when we still need a CM

Costa - £80m+ not gonna happen when we still need a CM

Kobel - Going to be Neuer's heir at Bayern

Anyone else?

Mendy was shocking with the ball at his feet?

Yea maybe but at least he could save long shots and catch the ball

That wasn't the argument i was replying to though, yes he was good for 6 months then became absolutely shocking.

said on another thread. Henderson... Really like him as a keeper. a lot of very good attributes. Doesn't want to play second choice either, would be an upgrade on Kepa. Sadly, as much as I wanted Kepa to work it simply hasnt really. A very good keeper for the continental game. Think the EPL is just a little too quick/powerful for him.
