Now... On to VAR... There seems to be A LOT of confusion. VAR doesn't look for fouls. It's for Goal reviews, offsides (part of all goal reviews), Red card incidents and mistaken identity. 

So when the VAR looks at that, he's looking to see if it should have been a Red card... Close, but I think no... Should it have been a penalty... No, he's outside the Box. 

That's it... VAR is done. 

So, how does it explain that VAR was used in the first leg if there was no goal scored?

You're right, I left that part out in the first part of my answer but addressed it in the second part. 

VAR is used for penalty reviews. So I fully believe that VAR decided that it wasn't a penalty because it was outside of the box. Decided it wasn't a red card because it was determined he had cover. 

Whether you agree with those calls or not isn't the point... The point was that VAR isn't going to bring the ball back for a foul outside of the box. That one is 100% on the field refs.

Unfortunately the a announcers don't help. I'm watching the Spurs/Palace game. Foul called outside the box, it was a missed call, the Spurs player kicked the ground. 

"let's see if he holds up play and uses VAR here, because it definitely appeared that he kicked the ground and wasn't fouled" 

Oh FFS, VAR isn't allowed to rule on that play since it's outside the box and not a red card incident. 

Yet, the announcer will have you believe the VAR is incompetent. 

Looks like Spuds are off to buy a tea set as they have no chance of winning any cups this season!
