January 24, 20206 yr It's a weird one. The only right answer is via the power of hindsight then: 75 million on van dyke? They must be crazy now: 75 million on van dyke? we were crazy not to Just spend big bucks on players who will come good simples. right? That may generally be true, but not applied to the example of Cavani. He's a fantastic player and I believe he still would be a strong improvement and a great deal on the cheap, but given his age Cavani couldn't possibly turn out to be a great deal at van Dijk's price because a) he won't be able to make the same impact on the club any more and b) he won't hold or even improve his resale value (imagine what van dijk would be sold for today). The only way Cavani for 80m€ would be a good deal is if he means the difference between KO vs Bayern and winning the Champions League, and that's too much to ask from any player

January 24, 20206 yr Includes wages so it might be worth the risk to cement CL. 200k a week amounts to 26mill ion of that 80It does, but the wages a part of the consideration. I like the idea of the Cavani deal because it could improve us immediately while not standing in the way of future plans. I'm wary of targets like Zaha and Dembele for the risk of them ending up as expensive deadwood that once again doesn't mean a real improvement but that we drag along for a long time, while the some money could be used for one major player in the summer. But with a £20m price tag and £360k wages Cavani loses that advantage to a degree... However I agree with you that cementing 4th is worth investing some money in, it's a fine line
January 24, 20206 yr Higuain was signed short term last season for a similar gamble. He did manage 5 goals in the league, mostly against weaker teams. You could probably argue either way about whether he helped us to make the top 4, or whether we would have done so without him. I reckon Cavani would be able to make a similar contribution and score a few goals here and there. Quite an expensive option as a temporary backup and could easily work out as poorly as Pato or Falcao.

Felt that if we had got Higuaín at the start he may have settled in much faster and of course we are again likely to move late in the day.......

Do we ever move any other way? Unless they've got a buy out clause its a torturous process for all involved. Marina haggling over every shilling. Great when you're selling not when your buying.

I don't. I never thought signing Higuain was a good idea, even on loan. I don't think he made any difference to us finishing in the top 4. As bad as Morata was, I didn't think Higuain was any better. He was showing signs that he wasn't as good as he used to be before he joined us. Even this season he has been mediocre, especially his goal scoring. 8 goals in 27 is nothing special, and he's playing for one of the top sides in Europe.

I'm surprised he is still playing at top level and for Juventus alongside Ronaldo. Cuadrado is playing as well and on the recent clip I watch he provided from deep a wonderful cross to Higuaín who hit it straight at the keeper.
January 26, 20206 yr Been reading that Cavani rejected a big money deal from Manchester United and his heart is set on a move to Atletico Madrid whether it is now or in the summer. If a move to Atletico Madrid doesn't materialize now, a six-month loan to us would not be out of the question. It would not hinder our future plans to go after the likes of Werner and Sancho in the Summer and it would provide some healthy competition for Tammy in the short term.

However, I think the thing seems to be that PSG would prefer to keep him for the last six months, which makes sense and then let him go to Atletico.

Well yes it is our money technically, the money we play for tickets, merchandise and to watch Chelsea on the TV amoung other things goes to the club. Breaking our wage structure for Cavani could potentially totally screw us in the long run. Imagine if Cavani completely flops (which given age and injury record really isn't that unlikely) while Tammy outpeforms him and bangs in the goals, best case scenario (when it comes to Tammy's new contract) is he wants parity and even that's being optimistic. Then if it came to attracting genuine or even borderline world class players they will look at Cavani and want wages to eclipse anyone around bar Messi and Ronaldo. A 6 month loan with subsidised wages is worth the risk, the contract Atletico are allegedly offering is mental and I'm very glad we're not trying to match that. Edited January 28, 20206 yr by Argo

While he was far from prime Higuain his intellegence especially with his movement helped us a lot, it's no coincidence our laboured football of December/January got better/less predictable as soon as he arrived because all of a sudden space was being created. Infact, if we had him in this December I don't think we lose at home to West Ham, Bournemouth and Saints, well certainly not all three anyway.
January 28, 20206 yr Cavani is a proven striker. I guess we need more his type than someone young and exciting. We need someone who can score in different ways in different continents. Cavani is that. He ticks a lot of boxes but man is that depressing paying a fortune for a short term guy.I feel we should accept what we have now and work with it. Even if it means we finish 7th.Even though he is all that he is unproven in the Prem.

The only difference is that we played more conservatively to avoid more hammerings. I didn't see anything from Higuain that made a big difference. Our form was still bad, and it remained that way until the end of the season.
January 29, 20206 yr Not a fan of the Cavani rumours. I think he's past his peak - best sticking with Abraham and trying to develop him further.
